Cap reasons. A cut the night before the league season opens is usually cap-related.

Now if we can lose Wayne Fucking Hunter without cap hits, that would be the dream come true.

I think if the Jets get him and Slauson is healthy they are right back where they were in 2010 in terms of protection. If they get him and a left guard in the 1st round it's probably the Jets best offensive line ever. Slauson would backup and then replace Moore when he goes.

    It's all about the U.

I swear, if Hunters 2.5 mil costs us a legit RT I'm going to explode.

Wow. No question the Jets have to go get this guy. This is a very good tackle with a lot of good years left.

The Texans need cap room to try and get Peyton. How ironic, "Hey Peyton come play on our team, but we have to cut our tackles in order to pay you" ...

Doesn't fit the blocking scheme. Very nice player, but Brown is a better fit under Sparano.

Signing Winston will take away a huge glaring need for this team. It will allow us to focus our draft completely on our D or maybe a wr.

Per thejetsblog.com int he comments section

    "Bent says:

In 2010, he was ranked 78th out of 78. Where did you get 45th out of 111 from? He was THE WORST IN THE LEAGUE and his performance was way, way worst than Hunter’s 2011 performance.

Even with his strong finish to 2011, he still ended up with a worse pass blocking grade than Hunter. They had an identical Pass Blocking Efficiency (92.8%) but the rating takes into account how badly the player was beaten or if it was a coverage sack, or the QB was flushed into their man, or the QB held the ball too long and turned a would-be pressure into a hit or sack.

    Brown 11 sacks, 5 hits, 40 pressures
    Hunter 11 sacks, 11 hits, 32 pressures

That pails into insignificance compared with Brown’s 2010 season though. 10 sacks, 10 hits and 50 pressures!

In 2009, he allowed nine sacks and 17 hits.

He played well at the end of 2011, but if you’re going to assume someone is good because of good play at the end of one season, then that’s the same philosophy that they used when they signed Hunter. The difference is that prior to that, Hunter had some solid performances as an extra lineman and some poor ones as a spot starter whereas Brown had three and a half years of downright ineptitude.

Maybe he’s turned the corner, but I can’t emphasize strongly enough how awful he was. I’m sure the Jets felt Hunter had turned the corner too."

So I visited a texans board, texanstalk.com, to see what they thought of their released right tackle. While they all seemed suprised, it seems pass protection was not one of his strengths. They do seem to think of him as a stout run blocker though.

hate to poop in everyone's cheerios but...this guy excels in a zone-blocking scheme. we don't play that no more. Callahan's in Dallas now.
