There will ALWAYS be a cap charge if cut for pretty much 90% of the NFL players signing multiple year deals. Any signing bonus, which is paid to atleast 90% of the players if not more IMO, is to be spread out over the LIFE of the contract. If a player signed a 4 year deal with $2mil in signing bonus, he will acount for $500k of prorated bonus in EVERY year. If he's cut after the 2nd year, the team takes on a hit of $1mil. If he's cut after the 3rd year, team takes on $500k and so forth. Sanchez will ALWAYS produce a hit if released OR traded regardless of what year he is in. His hit of $2-3 mil isn't that significant if cutting him saves the team $12 mil in cap space anyways. This deal is another one of Tanny's masterpieces. It has some risk to it, but major rewards. If Sanchez sucks in 2012, then risk becomes realistic and the Jets are in trouble for 2013. In that case, we will probably draft a QB with the top 10 pick we'd end up after a horrible season and groom him for a year. If Sanchez is average in 2012, then he surely deserves 2013. If Sanchez lights it up in 2012 and continues to play at that level, then you have a steal of a deal. Not many QBs that play at a great level will cost you less than $40mil over 3 years. In this case, if Sanchez is to say gets a shoulder injury and the odds are against him, Jets can still cut Sanchez even with that huge contract in 2015 and still not endure any major cap hit. There are tons of fools on this board that know nothing about player contracts and how it works. Sanchez was not going to sign a new contract at a lower salary. Sanchez also wasn't going to restructure his deal to allow cap space because of the Manning rumors. He would have been fine if the team had let him become a FA instead of converting his base salary in to a bonus and trying to save the Jets cap space this year. The ONLY way Sanchez was going to allow the Jets to have a cap friendly contract this year was by having some sort of major guarantee in the form of money. And Tanny wasn't just going to do that without getting anything out of it. He wanted to secure the future as well if he was going to guarantee any money to Sanchez. He did so in such a fashion, no other major contract in the NFL has been done so from what I know.
It was a nice cap deal a masterpiece for a GM is actually drafting an impact pass rusher when you have the 6th pick in the draft, drafting a TE in the 2nd or third round that can actually block and cath instead of moving up to the first to take a slightly undersized TE that can only catch. Actually drafting an immediate upgrade on the OL at 2 instead of a project who may never start and maybe drafting a safety with some range in 5 years. Tannenbaum clearly has done a nice job dealing with the cap over the years but the team has been in general talent decline since 08. Lets see him have a deep great draft that sets this team up to actually make a SB charge instead of simply opening up cap space to plug holes of his own making.
No. Some core players on the team have been on age decline. And last year a talent was allowed to walk out the door and wasn't adequately replaced. Let's not make this about something that it isn't. Pace and Thomas and Scott and Harris were a good strong unit. But they got hurt, and mostly they got old. The shelf life on 3 of them are just about up. Now we've gotta go switch them out for the new models. We're no worse for the wear.

It really is funny when you add up all the World Championships the Jets have won recently. Stupid fans whining and being over reactive about things.
Part of being a good GM is planning for two years down the road. The Jets never do this. The line gets old and injured, the linebackers get old and injured and it all happens in repeatable cycles ad nauseum. It's not like there's a foolproof way to avoid a declining talent base however it's also not like there aren't foolish ways to aggravate the problem. The Jets tend to find those foolish ways every 5 years or so.
Planning for the future and drafting well go hand in hand...... Really, Ducasse and Gholston were supposed to be THE pieces that made the difference in this team.... If Both were what they were supposed to be then the plan would have worked to perfection... That's not all on Tanny - He relys on supposedly some great talent evaluators for these things..... I NEVER draft Sanchez though... Would have solidified everything else and waited on my QB.

Every team has misses in the draft, it's a bit of a crap shoot. You can hedge that bet by making more picks though. The problem Tanny has gotten into has been trading so many picks away so he hasn't allowed himself the opportunity to hedge his draft bets. When he misses on a guy or two like every team does, he doesn't have that 2nd -> 4th round pick at the same position waiting in the wings. He has undrafted free agents. Ducasse could still work out too - lets see how he takes to the man blocking scheme with a full NFL offseason.
Yeah but he got legit all pro caliber players in '06 and '07- 4 of them. Quality over quantity. Remember, this was the first year depth was an issue under Rex and tannenbaum and a big reason for that was our top reserve OL became a starter, our next top reserve OL got hurt for the year, then our top OL was playing hurt most of the year. In '09 we had to overcome the loss of our most important defensive player not named Revis(and he may have been more important than Revis at that time) in kris Jenkins and our best playmaker on O in Leon Washington. In '10 we had to overcome Jenkins getting hurt again, losing jim Leonhard and Damien Woody.
I am still pissed about this move. I get all the upside of freeing up cap space. btw why do we need to free up cap space by rewarding Sanchez at all? Oh yeah, because the team has a lot of holes in it and hardly any cap space. Great. But the real problem remains the same. If Sanchez sucks this year, meaning plays like he did down the stretch this past year, the Jets will now have more difficulty moving on. The move amounts to doubling down on Sanchez. Yeah, that's not all it is. But it is that. Okay, it's a done deal, and I never said I know he will suck next year. It is what it is. I get it. I just ain't too friggin happy about it.
BT and Ryan where all in on this guy when they drafted him 5th. The guy is a third year QB takes 5-6 years to become an elite QB in this league. Giving up on him is not an option hoping for him to fail you should root for another team. Have the Jets ever had a QB you liked?
Lets take a look at hi draft pick QB's how many competed for their job in their fourth year. Go back and take a look at the ones that had a decline in their third season. Give this kid a break he has two years to prove he can be a legit QB in this league give him a chance. He did not have the luxury of sitting on the bench and learning like other one year college starters. With that comes major on the job growing pains. If you expect him to be an elite QB next year you will be disappointed again but he should show some major signs of growth if he does not BT and RR will probably be looking for new jobs. I think the stars lined up against him last year. BS was horrible the o-line was suspect and his safety valve WR BE was gone. We will see I still like the kid I think he has huge upside and has proved he can win in pressure situations. If he plays like he did down the stretch this year next year contract or no he will be on the bench.
Well, that's your choice to be unhappy. I'm hyped. Free agency starts today and we have decent money to play with. Sanchez will be just fine provide we fill the right holes. Breaking the bank on another QB is not a smart move at this point. I mean, should we have made a ridiculous irrational trade for #2 like the Redskins did, or sign Peyton, hurting our depth more? The Sanchez contract was the right decision, he's clearly got the goods, we need to give him a better supporting cast. Claiming Sanchez regressed simply because he had 26 turnovers (less than Eli last year) is silly when he improved most other things.
Be careful what you wish for. 3 firsts and a second is a very steep price for a supposed franchise QB. Jets got Sanchez for extremely cheap.
Yes we should have if we could have. This team used a 1 on Gholston, traded up to the first round for a decent not great TE, took a project Guard in round 2. I like Sanchez but I don't believe for a minute he is going to be an elite QB now or in the future. Hopefully he's good enough and we start drafting a whole lot better or this team isn't going anywhere.
