Alright heres my new dream of FA period transactions. - Trade DK (for whatever hes worth, ideally a 3rd or 4th) - Sign Martellus Bennett (TE) - Sign Fasano if/when he probably becomes available - Sign Anthony Collins (if cheap enough) + get rid of Hunter - Sign Braylon Edwards - Sign Kendall Langford (could be surprisingly cheap) - Resign Pouha (put in a bid for Solaili if Pouha gets $$$ hungry) - If healthy bring back Leonhard for vet min - Attempt to sign reggie nelson if cheap enough - Sign either Jarret Johnson/Bryan Thomas on the cheap Don't think this is the most Tanny-Like offseason, but it does incredible things for our roster, and imo makes our offense have top 10 potential.
DK has a salary this year of nearly $4m and would be a UFA next year - I cant see anyone trading for him (unless it was for something like a 6th round pick) and anyone we could get in FA would be markedly worse in any event.
Hes one of the better recieving TE, and most teams prefer recieving TEs to blocking ones these days. A 4th rounder for a 1 year try out for him, before having the option to resign him really isnt a bad deal at all. Especially when you look at the alternatives for recieving TEs in FA (Shiancoe, Clark both are old and beat up, and not even remotely close to as good as DK in recieving atm) I truly doubt it would be hard to get a 4th for DK. And as I mentioned we could sign Martellus Bennett (a FAR FAR better fit in our offense, he is a GREAT blocking TE, mediocre receiving one with solid potential) plus the possibly that Fasano gets cut by the Dolphins due to their cap needs plus the fact that hes a poor fit for their new offense. The Jets NEED tight ends that can block, its the way our team was made to play football. And considering that we got Sparano as our OC (a run first guy who likes big blocking tight ends), I absolutely fricken guarantee that we have to make SOME reasonable overhall to our TE corp
And interestingly enough after a little looking on google responding to a fans questions about him (Martellus Bennett) being a Jet @metsjetsnets88 I like it. Me and DK worked out a couple days in Tampa together. @metsjetsnets88 the one two punch would be 2nd to none and would be similar to what some other teams do if a staff commits to it. Rotoworld also predicted the Jets sign him to a 2 year 5 million dollar contract also If we could get Bennett and Fasano, I would be very, very pleased
I cant believe people dont understand that DK completely doesn't fit in with our offensive philosophy at all
I know. But I don't know. The guy is still a talent even not ideal for us. If we just had a decent blocking/receiving TE we would open up DK's passing game even more while shifting the responsibilities that he can't handle to someone that isn't going to shoot us in the foot a la Mulligan. I think you have to mold the system to your talent whenever possible. I just don't think we're going to get much of anything for Keller and he should still be worth more than us than not much of anything I would hope.
a 4th-5th for dk can net us a mediocre wr/te + 4 million in cap space. Thats pretty decent if you ask me
Yeah I was just skimming I wasn't really considering that you could more or less replace him and knock his salary off. Objection withdrawn.
He's still Mark Sanchez's go to guy. They both had a rough year, but I don't think that getting rid of Sanchez's #1 target again is a good idea. I very highly doubt we ditch Keller. If anything we bring in another TE that's better blocking and use Keller in more passing downs, switching back and forth, or both together making it tough to defend the pass.
Well, to be fair, nobody knows what the Jets offensive philosophy is - including the players who will be asked to play in it. If we're lucky the Jets will settle on a single idea, that is manageable with the talent on hand, and execute that philosophy well enough for the offense to become a net plus for the team for the first time in 8 seasons. The last time the Jets had a clear cut philosophy on offense that they stuck with for the entire season without deviating much was 2004. BTW, the offensive coordinator was let go at the end of that season.
I know you don't like the non-existence of clear-cut offensive system. I hate that too. However, painting Paul Hackett firing in entirely wrong color is not right no matter what the circumstance is.
Paul Hackett got fired because Chad Pennington got hurt late in the season in '04 and could not throw the ball all that well and because Doug Brien missed a couple of FG's. Yeah he was very unpopular with the fan base but he wasn't the reason the Jets lost it in '04 at the end. And if they had beaten the Steelers in Pittsburgh the odds are pretty good Hackett sticks around for '05.
1. I wouldn't be too hasty in dispatching Keller. It more or less depends on whether Sparano can find a way to utilize him without sabotaging the run game. (Last time I checked, Jay Novacek was not the kind of blocking TE either, yet Emmitt Smith had no problem rushing regardless of Novacek's blocking ability.) The OL has to block better - that is the bottom line. Not whether Keller can block or not. Like I've been saying for years, the blocking from TE should be seen as a LUXURY, not a NECESSITY. Moreover, Jets have an underused lead blocker in Conner. That said, if Jets do decide to hold on to Keller (which I think is a strong possibility) then the prudent thing to do is to extend Keller's contract and lower the cap figure. If Martellus Bennett tags along (or Fasano, depending on the situation) then it is a signal that Conner is taking the back seat even in run games (which has been the case so far by the way). If Jets are going with double TE set, then that's the end of Kerley too. Edwards signing (or any deep physical threat for that matter) becomes a strong possibility. 2. Wayne Hunter. What do we do with that steaming pile of shit? Jets had better hope some old, quality OL falls off this summer as a cap casualty. (Ravens lucked out last season with Birk and McKinnie signing) 3. Ideally if 1st round pick goes to the defense, then 2nd round pick should go to the offense, but I would hope that Jets take pass rushing OLB in 1st, and Mark Barron (if he's there) in 2nd. If Jets can find affordable safety with good upside, I wouldn't be against drafting 2 OLBs in 1st and 2nd round picks either.
Martellus Bennett is the Justin McCareins of TEs. He shows up for the preseason and disappears during the regular season. And I am not very impressed with his blocking, not sure where anyone got the idea that he is a 'great' blocker.
Unless something radically changed with Reggie Nelson since he left JAX(haven't watched him since), he's a less talented, less instinctive version of Kerry Rhodes. HE SUCKED!
This is like a super-powered version of the Strickland and Pool gambles. It's just like the Kris Jenkins gamble. Not saying it is not worth doing but anything the Jets spend on Landry has to be spent with the knowledge that it is 50/50 the Jets never get much return on the investment.
