Thats the New York Jets for you. Commitment to mediocrity at its finest. They just dont know when to let go of whats not working. 8-8 or 7-9 here we come sadly.

Yeah, let's just give up Sanchez, who provided the most success to the Jets in 3 years than any other QB for any amount of time besides Joe.

The numbers are rolling in. The extension is very friendly for the Jets. Only 2.75m more guaranteed next year, 3m the following according to Mehta.

    Flame away flamers.

Breaking down Sanchez’s “lipstick and powder” contract
    Mike Florio

Yes, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez will earn $20.5 million in guaranteed money in 2012 and 2013 as part of his new contract. The fact, however, that Sanchez already was due to earn $17.75 million over the next two seasons has prompted one league source to characterize the move as a “lipstick and powder” deal.

For an extra $2.75 million, Sanchez gave the Jets three straight option years, allowing the team to keep him if he finally realizes his full potential — and to cut him without further investment after the 2013 season, the 2014 season, or the 2015 season.

The contract also could be called a glorified restructuring. Per a source with knowledge of the details, Sanchez’s $11.75 million base salary for 2012 has been converted to an $8 million signing bonus, a fully-guaranteed base salary of $3.25 million, and a $500,000 workout bonus.

The move creates $6.4 million in 2012 cap space.

In 2013, Sanchez will receive a fully-guaranteed base salary of $8.25 million. In 2014, Sanchez is due to receive a $2 million roster bonus on the 15th day of the league year and a non-guaranteed $9 million base salary. In 2015, there’s another $1 million roster bonus due on the 15th day of the league year, plus a non-guaranteed base salary of $12.5 million. In 2016, Sanchez is due another $1 million roster bonus on the 15th day of the league yeaar, plus a base salary of $10.75 million. Workout bonuses of $500,000 apply in each year of the deal.

The contract contains $10 million in potential escalators, based in part on Super Bowl appearances and/or victories.

Given the organization’s apparent mixed feelings about Sanchez, getting the extra money and converting all of it to a guaranteed payment was a good career move. He could have been dumped after 2012, with the $6 million due next year forever gone.

Still, it likely wasn’t an accident that the news of this one came late on a Friday night. It’s hardly a big-money, long-term commitment.

Which actually will be regarded by plenty of Jets fans as good news.

Commitment to mediocrity would be picking up Henne and giving him the same contract, not freeing up cap space and trying to fill holes with better options. Sanchez doesn't have to play like an all pro for the Jets to get to championship games. We've seen it before.

Question Mike T the talent evaluator, never question Mike T the contract writer!

^Tannenbaum bends the cap over yet again. Looking forward to some responses.

Seriously. Whats next, extending Eric Smith and Mark Brunell? This better set them up for some big WR signing because this will be just as bad as last year. There are so many holes on this team and they extend 2 of them. So frustrating being a Jet fan these days....

The success was majorly despite of him but you keep thinking that and cheering on this awful QB when he fails again this year, Sanchez fan.

Its funny that opposing teams fans and their players see how bad Sanchez is but their own fans think hes some kind of savior!

It's a good move. The risk is basically all in 2013 when cutting Sanchez or trading him becomes hard because of both the guaranteed salary and the overall cap hit he'll have that year which will be the 8.5 million salary plus 4 million from the bonus this year plus whatever else has accrued as a result of past bonuses.

I actually like the fact that the Jets can't reasonably consider cutting Sanchez next season. That'll give him more strength in the locker room.

I still think the Jets are in a bit of a bad position but nailing down the QB position for the next couple of seasons and freeing up some cap space in the process is a good thing.

I support Mike T. And I support the Jets, unlike you. We can't control what goes on, but we can control who to root for. And I know Sanchez will be back this year. I really want you to be posting again when he does shut you up.

Oh wow, 6 games of experience. Lets send him off to Canton right now. Feel free to post his regular season numbers btw. You do realize that he wont get another shot in the playoffs to improve those numbers if he doesnt play better during the season, right?

You keep saying he had nothing to do with the playoff success, yet he has the 6th best postseason passer rating in NFL history - right behind Joe Montana. Your opinion doesn't match the facts.

No one wants to send him to Canton, he obviously has a lot of improvement to make. He has shown a lot of positive things for a young QB though. Let's fix the o-line and see what he can do outside of a Schottenheimer mutant offense. The contract gives him 2 years to prove himself.

Ill be more than happy to eat any kind of crow but 3 year trial so far for one of the worst QBs that gets extended for another few years based off of his poor overall play in the NFL doesnt look to promising.

Thats such a small sample. If you match him up with all the games Montana has played, he wont even be on the list.

You missed Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers with the same number of games? Of course it's a small sample he's only been in the league 3 fucking years. Most QB's don't come close to playing in that many playoff games there first 3 years.

OMG Sanchez sucks because he didn't play 23 playoff games in his first 3 seasons.

6.4 million in cap savings is definitely worth it, and this doesn't mean we have to commit to Sanchez long term. It means he will have to earn this contract. I will shit a brick if we can land Mario because of this.
