A QB is generally worth more than a WR, so I don't see the point of comparing Holmes and Sanchez's guaranteed money.
There was a scenario a week ago where Sanchez would have been out on the street with no more money coming his way from the Jets. It was a very narrow scenario: Sign Peyton Manning who actually wants to come to the Jets for some reason, find no takers for Sanchez in trade, Sanchez refuses a big paycut, but that narrow scenario was there. I look at this as a 2 year signing basically with options for future years after that. The Jets gave Sanchez $27 million to get it done and he, of course, took the money because nobody says no to cash. That the Jets got real cap relief out of it is a very good thing. That they resolved the QB controversy this off-season in a definitive way is even better.
Exaclty, thank you. Everyone always overreacts about the so-called total money... but how often do players see that kind of money? In reality we should all STFU until contract details are released.
Holmes is making top 10 WR money. There are several WR's with deals better than their QB at this point. Larry Fitzgerald is making a lot more than Kevin Kolb. Andre Johnson is making more than Matt Schaub. Greg Jennings is probably making more than Aaron Rodgers.
Great, now I keep reading your posts with a Mr T voice in my head! As regards the extension, clearly there were no decent FA QBs that the Jets were going to get (Henne for $5m? no thanks) and no chance to draft another "franchise" QB and so they knew they are going to have Mark as the QB this season and probably the next as well (the team is nowhere near bad enough to get a top 5 pick without trading for it) so why not sign Mark to the next couple of years at a more cap friendly rate - if he improves (as I hope he will) then great we have him locked up long term at a reasonable rate for a starting QB and if he doesn't then he goes.
Are you kidding me? We could have traded Sanchez and he would have gotten a new deal from the team that wanted him in a minute. His current deal for this year sucked. Manning didn't want to come here and the Jets have no real options at QB other than Sanchez. He's current deal tied our hands this year when we need the space. Stop making this more than it is. There are 4 QBs this year that are available who are worth more than Sanchez right now Manning, Flynn, Luck and RG3. There are a handful of teams with outstanding QB's. It's a need position. We have little choice but to stay the track right now. If you like Sanchez it's a nice move, if you don't like Sanchez it's a nice move.
Good. Now we can move on to fixing the real holes on the team and not worry about trying to replace a 25-year-old QB who has already won a lot of games here.
If we wanted to clear up cap space it would have been much better to cut Sanchez. There are lots of Akili Smith/Joe Harrington/Mark Sanchez type QBs we could get at a much cheaper price. Overpaying for a journeyman QB just to show faith in him is a desperation move that will set the franchise back for years. The ceiling fro Sanchez is so low. He cannot throw out of the pocket. He has no accuracy. He plays in constant state of fear. He is soft and gives up on plays. He is a sack and turnover machine. He is a defenses dream. There is simply no worse QB in the league. To hope that one day he may grow into the 2nd or 3rd worst QB in the league or to hope that we can continue to win by designing our offense to compensate for his limitations just means more years of pain. Last year was just the beginning of the fan and media firestorm. The honeymoon period, false media hype and excuses for Sanchez are over. As he continues to play poorly his poor play he will come under more and more scrutiny. It is fairly obvious now he cannot handle pressure or criticism. I can only imagine how bad things will get for him as fans, the media and the players turn against him this year.
I think this is a very interesting move, it's a little risky, but overall I think it makes a lot of sense. It seems like the contract is structured so the Jets can walk away from Sanchez after 2013 with little to no dead money. Even if there is some, the huge cap increase coming in 2014 means it would have a pretty minimal impact on overall team-building. If Sanchez turns out to be someone you can build around, you have him locked in for three years at very reasonable money. That's a home-run for the team. The contract also helps the team in 2012, when Sanchez was gonna be the starter either way. We'll have to wait and see what the exact numbers are, but I wouldn't be surprised if this clears up as much as ten million dollars of cap space. That's money that can help the team, and the QB, be successful. So all the risk comes in 2013, now that Sanchez is guaranteed to be on the team. If he plays well (not great, just well) I don't think many people will be complaining. However, if he continues to struggle with the same problems that have haunted him his whole career, this contract will look like an albatross. It's gonna be damn-near impossible to field a winning team if you're paying starting money to a guy who can't get it done. But let's be honest, if the team doesn't preform well in 2012 Tannenbaum is probably getting the axe anyway, so what does he care what happens after that? This move just gives him more resources to improve a team that will determine his fate within the organization. Sanchez and Tannenbaum are the big winners here, but I think it's still a risk worth taking as far as the organization is concerned. A one year (2013) risk, but the upside is absolutely enormous if Sanchez turns out to be a franchise QB.
Really Einstein? This organization was a joke in 09 and 10 as well? Or were you still under the rock?
I am not sure what to call Sanchez. The boy is just to inconsistent for me to call pretty good. I hoping that he becomes a pretty goodQB
Mike T is a moron. Extending one of the worst QB in the NFL for 3 years and paying him like a top 7. I dont care if its for cap relief or not, you make your players earn their extensions and you sure as hell dont pay a bottom of the league QB like a top 7. This fool should be on the chopping block if this team fails to make the playoffs this year and they wont if Miami signs Manning. We better pray he goes to AZ.
Well said, and the rite move. This team has committed alot in Sanchez and it would be even more of a detrimental setback to not see it through.
Tannenbaums job will be on the line if this idiotic move doesnt pan out. Sanchez definitely was a winner here though. He should be arrested for stealing all this money.
On o e hand, you Degrade Revis' value to the D cuz he only plays against one player. and on the other hand, you now claim a WR is as important as a QB if not more. How come? I've never seen an elite QB get a 5 year $90mil extension. Have you? If you think Holmes will be crying after he sees this contract, then think again. He's getting paid prime money, in the top 10 for his position. Do you think Folk will now ask a "Sanchez contract" cuz he thinks he's better than Sanchez at what he does? You can't compare two different positions with each other.
Haha, Sanchez sucks. In reality, freed up space and bought some time. Not much, but enough. They'll cut/trade his ass if he doesn't step it up. I don't see a problem. Nice that the Joey Harrington comparison still lives on, though.
