I thought when I saw the ticker on NFL network about Sanchez's contract, it was going to be about how he restructured and took a pay cut. But no, he gets rewarded after the management admits he didn't play good enough last year. This does NOT send a good message to the rest of the team. It shows them that Sanchez is different than them, that he doesn't have to earn his job, that we need to treat him like a child and not hurt his feelings. I understand the cap relief, but he is severely, severely overpaid now. If you want some honesty, I'll say he still can get better, I hope he gets better now. But now you have to be honest and stop making excuses for him, like the rest of the team failed, and the locker room failed, and he would've done this and that if not for the team... He is NOT a leader. That's my biggest problem with him. Not that he still misses wide open receivers or he has trouble reading defenses. He is NOT a leader. Inspires no confidence in those around him. Doesn't have the eye of the tiger. When something bad happens, it's all over with him. I thought at the very least he should have to compete for the job this year, but I guess Ryan didn't think he would be able to even handle that. (And by the way, 26 TD passes is nice, but the 26 or so turnovers was not, especially when a lot of them happened)
This will go down as one of the worst moves in franchise history. It is just throwing away money. If they want to give money to someone who cannot play football I can think of a lot more worthy candidates than Sanchez. What a brilliant idea give the worst QB in the league a 3 year extension. But the problem with this move is it wastes more than money. It wastes time. It will set back the organization for many years. How many years now until we get a real QB and how much of the nucleus will be left. I have been a Jet fan for over 40 years. I have held the belief that I am not allowed to die until they win a championship. This move seems designed to make me immortal. While at least for me that may be a happy thought it is quite sad. Such a desperate awful move. Now I think we can understand why Manning wanted nothing to do with the Jets. Yes its possible to win without a QB. Look at the ravens and us in 2009 and 2010. But one has to be so lucky and have everything fall just right to do so. If your Revis and you know the Jets cannot franchise you or restrict you in anyway after next season do you really want to come back and have Sanchez waste your talents? This is the kind of move that may cause us to lose a number of players. What quality backup will want to come here this year knowing he has no chance to fight for the job. What happens when Sanchez tanks again this year and people and the media really turn on him. Its going to be ugly beyond belief.
This is the same scenario the rest of the team has encountered on EVERY team they have ever played on starting with pee-wee football at age 6. If the rest of the team ain't used to the QB being the 'big man on campus' yet, they never will.
As for me. This move has led me to renew my season tickets for this season. It has restored my faith in the Jets and convinced me that they will continue to do what is needed to fix the mistakes and personnel holes that were evident when the season ended. And it indicates that they have learned from past mistakes. For that reason, 2008 was one of the most important years in Jets history.
Luck's expectations are greater than 3-13, particularly with the spotlight on the #1 pick. The only thing in his favour is if the Colts do tank to 3-13, they can put it down to growing pains and compare his stats to Eli Manning in his first year. You know the drill.
Expensive price to pay for make-up sex. Until we get a real GM, the organization will continue to be a complete joke.
I'm happy that the Jets are sticking with Sanchez instead of blowing up the team to roll the dice on Manning, but I don't like this extension. I just don't understand the logic of tying up $35 million in the Sanchez/Holmes combination over the next two years, not after the way that things melted down for them this year. I don't think that Sanchez has earned this kind of contract, and I think that this was an unnecessary concession to a player without a lot of leverage.
The Jets were stuck on this one. If they let next season happen without making a commitment to Sanchez the problems in the locker room just fester unchecked. If they make the commitment then Sanchez has more control of the situation and he's more able to manage the locker room issues. I think I go along with the general idea that all this does is to commit the Jets through 2013 while strengthening Sanchez hand in the meantime. If things don't go well next season then the Jets will either collapse, giving them a shot at a QB in the 2013 draft with Sanchez a caretaker at that point until the QB is ready to go, or the Jets will struggle along with no clear indicator that Sanchez is the problem - much like this season. In the latter case 2013 turns into the make or break year for Sanchez and the Jets. Eli Manning was actually worse the year the Giants won the Super Bowl than he was in his 3rd year. Sometimes it just takes time for a player to find their footing and sometimes those players never find it. That's just what it is. In any case the Jets penchant for quick fixes was not indulged here. They're going to see out the Mark Sanchez scenario to it's end. That's a good thing for the Jets in my opinion.
How is a cap move one of the worst moves in Franchise history? This is an economic tinker this isn't passing on Dan Marino when he was starring you in the face on draft day.
There's such an arrogance here about this. A we know better than everyone else kind of attitude. You can feel like this was the right move, but I don't see how anyone can think it's crazy that others think this was stupid. The consensus from most places is befuddlement. Sanchez has got the Jets, Pats, Dolphins, Bills, and every other team in the league fans celebrating. Just for different reasons. Kind of funny. It's gonna be interesting to see how this plays out.
But isn't this move worse than what he had and really just for show? Especially if its more incentive based. He knows it and all the players do too. So essentially... It is EXACTLY what he had earned. One more chance to prove himself or GTFO.
Mark Sanchez has beaten the Pats 3 times since he came into the league 3 years ago. The only other QB with even 2 wins against the Pats over that span is Eli Manning. Believe me, the Patriots are not rejoicing over him being around for at least another few years. Even if they get a home playoff game against him they won't be sure they have it in hand.
It's $27 million new guaranteed dollars. You think Santonio Holmes didn't shit himself when he found out the Jets are going to be paying Sanchez $7 million more in guarantees over the next 2 years than he is getting? Money talks. The Jets just put a lot more of it in Mark Sanchez bank account. Nobody on the Jets is going to miss that point. Shut up or GTFO. That's what the Jets are saying, and not to Sanchez... BTW, the only way the Jets had to definitively tell Holmes that Sanchez was more valuable to them, given the huge guarantees they had already made to Holmes, was to give Sanchez more.
It sounds like he got a 2 year deal that frees up cap space this year. Everyone making this out like it's a big commitment may be looking at essentially a 2 year deal. This is more about Tannenbaum and Rex surviving the next 2 years than it is about Sanchez being annionted king. It may well be that its worth it to the jets to pay him 7 million more for 2 years and free up space this year. Especially for Tannenbaum and Rex who's asses are on the line this year. The Jets are basically saying the team has holes and we are going to try and fill them this year. That's about all it says.
