What I don't like... there will be no competition at QB, and Mark gets another free ride.

The staff must feel Sanchez with McElroy at backup are good enough to get it done.

They will draft a Brandon Wheedon, pretend that is legitimate competition for the worst starting qb in the NFL, and then waste another year while the awful one throw's non-stop pick 6's and losses games, again.

This team is run by idiots. And Rex Ryan continues to show he knows nothing about offense if he signed off on this.

    You're right.

Manning who told the Jets he didnt want to come here after we were publicly announced as the second team to contact Manning. We didnt pursue him at all (sarcasm/), and did the only sensible thing when he said no. Roll with what we have while in the same time dropping Mark's cap number so we can fill some other holes on the team.

so yes you are absolutely right. Fire everyone, then hire them all back purely for the enjoyment of firing them again!

    Bill Parcells:

Never draft a QB who had limited play in college

Never draft a QB who has never played in rough conditions and snow

    Ryan and Tanny:

DID YOU SEE ALL THE FRIENDS HE HAD SHOW UP FOR HIS PRO DAY!!!!!!!!

They day Ryan Drafted Sanchez was the begining of the end of his Career as a HC.

Too bad cuz I think he could have been a good one in the right situation with a real QB.

None of my opinions have changed ince watching Sanchez at USC.... I said this all along - Do not draft this guy and certainly do not Trade up and pay extra

At least you still have something to whine about for the next 6 months.

So genius, what is your plan after Manning told us no thanks and the Jets, with many holes to fill, were faced with a huge cap number for Sanchez in 12 and 13 and little money to spend on FA?

    What would you have done?

Now the Jets are still only committed to Sanchez for two years, have money to spend to fill numerous weaknesses that were exposed when the whole team fell apart last year, and have a plan to revamp the offense.

What would you do when Manning told the Jets no and you had a QB with $15 million cap hit?

It is absolutely mind boggling that so many Jets fans do not understand the benefits of this signing.

Wow are you just waking up? The NYJs have been a inept, bumbling/stumbling organization for the last 43 years which is why we have not won a SB during all those years

I agree. People are acting like we could have got Manning hands down no questions asked for peanuts and just chose not to. That there are bucket loads of franchise QBs just laying around and they are just choosing not to pursue anything.

    1) that's stupid
    2) Sanchez is not the "worst starting QB in the league" as some are saying. Not by a long shot. Does he have work to do? Yes. Should they put some additional pressure on him by bringing in some competition? Yes. But has he peaked in his career, has no opportunity to improve and now is entering the decline of his career? No. Not even close. He's going into his fourth year. Fourth. So far out of his four years he's missed the playoffs once and gone to the AFC championship twice. How many QBs with lots of experience can say they've done that much in the last three years? Probably not many.

I swear, Sanchez could win us the Super Bowl win SB MVP and people would be complaining about which hand he lifted the Lombardi Trophy with.

    Chill out, people.

if Mark Sanchez ever wins a SB, it will be because of the team, not him.

Wow, we make another smart move and still have Jets fans being dickheads. GET REAL!!!!!! Manning doesn't want to come here and nor does 60% of JetNation want him here. I hope he ends up with the Dolphins. I want to see what all these "fans" are saying when our "idiot" QB beats him twice a year. This team doesn't need a new QB, it needs a better supporting cast. People don't realize he is only 25 years old. He is still going to keep getting better. Shit, we got so used to winning that every Jet fan wants the whole staff fired if we lose one game.

I'm excited for the upcoming season and all Jets fans should be.

CAP benefits or not --- the guy is now the 7th highest paid QB in the league.

We've pushed our chips all in on this guy. If he doesnt improve next season (and all I am expecting to see is improvement - not elite), then he deserves all the 2nd guessing / media slamming.

I think Sanchez COULD be a very good QB, but he obviously isn't there yet. I think I mostly agree with your assessment here, but I want to see the details of the contract first. Did the Jets give themselves a reasonable out after 2 years? If so, it's probably a good move. If not, they are taking a big risk.

    # is slightly misleading since there are other QBs who are looking at bigger contracts who haven't been paid yet. Also, keep in mind he plays in NY, so he's gonna get more money by default. Eli was extended as a top 4/5 QB before last season (where he was considered nothing more than an average QB).

Do any of you have any idea how the NFL actually works?
The Jets checked in on Manning and he said no.
This shouldn't be a suprise as he said no in 1997 as well.
He was never coming to NY to play in the same market as his brother.
Why everyone continues to delude themselves on this point is beyond me.
I won't even get into the whole weather, schematic and personnel issues as to why he wouldn't come to the Jets either as they are secondary in nature.

Anyway, jumping off the bridge will be pretty premature given that FA hasn't even started. The Jets will sign a legit #2 back-up once the dust settles. With the cap not moving much over $120 million, there will be plenty of options before and even after the draft.

As for the contract extension, without even seeing the numbers, I am sure that this is all ego inflated $$$ figures and the guaranteed money is only for 2012 and 2013 when the Jets need cap relief. I guarantee the contract is designed to be renegotiated after 2013 when the Jets and Sanchez will need to make a decision based upon his play during those two seasons. In the interim, the Jets get cap relief which is what they needed.

Agreed. This is what me and a few other posters here are assuming. We're locked into him for 2 more years, one of which we already knew of for 2012. We get to 'significantly' lower our cap number for the next 2 years presumably. I really see this as a good deal regardless if you view Sanchez as a solid QB or you're in the other camp.

I think David Garrard would be an excellent back-up. He has experience and has been successful and is known to be a good teammate.

Everybody should be celebrating that fact. Because his number was just LOWERED. so he's only being paid 7th best now, which will also be eclipsed by Manning and Brees in the next 10 days.

I can't wait for next season. It should be finally the time when the Sanchez haters shut-up or the post-season-QB-rating apologists realise he's not actually that good.

I'm not buying any "inexperienced" excuses in 2013 - give him the OL and WR tools he needs and lets see if he has a bigger armory than dink/dunk passes and fake end arounds.

Guess what, teams always win that super bowl. Thats why they said Congratulation New York Giants this year, not Congratulations Eli Manning. No QB has ever singlehandedly won a super bowl. You understand there are 52 other players on the team plus coaches that can determine the outcome of the game. Then if your real lucky/unlucky the 3+ refs can also determine the outcome too. But no go on and believe that single players win super bowls
