Me too. They didn't have to do anything. Now they are locked in for 2 years with a QB that according to the Jets didn't play well last year and hasn't progressed as much as they'd hoped. Why not wait out next year?

    This is bizarre.

It makes sense. I believe the contract basically translates to he is the QB for the next two years guaranteed BUT if they feel as though after that he isnt proving well as the starter, they can cut him and free up money.

If he ends up playing better and shows he can be a franchise QB, we just got a player on the cheaper scale of things till 2017.

It also in the process frees up money for this year so we can fill holes on this team to further improve our chances of competing for a Superbowl.

In the end its a bit of a gamble but not much of an insane one as made out to be.

If Cimini's report is correct, Sanchez is now basically uncuttable for this year AND the following season due to his salary. I have no problem with this year, but why put yourself in a position to guarantee him a job in 2013 if he doesn't get the job done this year? They seemed to have a lot of questions about him going into next season. Now they are stuck with him no matter what for 2 seasons.

I hope it pans out, but I'm not sure why they made this move if they didn't have to.

Think of it this way, we essentially give Sanchez another year and bet on him being great for the future. Its worth it in the end, Tanny gambles but he has ways of being on the better side of deals. He wont screw us.

When/If Sanchez blows again, we will hear the apologists come out and blame it on the coaching system and demand he be given more time, which on the face of it is reasonable.
So this years TC and OTAs is where he needs to up his game, big time or IMHO he will be gone.
For the record, I don't want an 'old' healing QB on the team either.

And this is why Cimini is the most read Jets writer ladies and gentlemen. This kind of half-hearted glass is half empty detractors makes up the bread and butter of the Jets fanbase and they just gobble that shit up. Gives me the skeeves like McDonald's.

Does this mean Tannenbaum agrees that Shotty sucked?

This contract basically gives us more FA cash this year and next and guarantees Sanchez is qb for next 2 years....1 more than he already was

Now lets be straight about Sanchez...was he awful or below average last year..no ..in fact up to week 13 I think he had improved but like the rest he imploded and as is typical in NYC he is now on a par with Neil O Donnell in Jets fans eyes

A new no nonsense OC will be the making of him...or so I hope..

Well I think in 5 years the Jets will know whether Sanchez is a good QB or not.

Great news as far as I'm concerned. You don't give up on a 25 yo 5th overall pick going into his 4th season.
I'm sure Manning didn't want to come here and I couldn't be happier.

I understand the potential cap benefits in the short term by this extension. But what kind of message does it send to the team and to the fans that right on the heels of getting the Heisman from Manning, we extend this guy who cannot even read a Defense??? Really?? Was I the only watching his play last season?

In the words of a good friend of mine, here is the current scouting report on Sanchize: "Mark Sanchez should be wearing a belt with yellow flags on it, playing in a Sunday Morning flag football Beer League." because he has not shown any consistently good NFL caliber play.

You have to hope the rumors about his pinched nerve is true. The guy didn't look right down the stretch.

We really weren't in position to pursue Manning or trade up for RG3. Hard to see what choice we had other than to trade him and take a shot at signing Flynn both a crap shoot.

We have money to fill holes and a dumbed down O being installed. The kid has shown flashes now it's time for management to develop it.

What great news, I couldn't be happier w/ what happened yesterday. For the first time in a while the Jets do the right thing. Incredible news for Jet fans that get it.

The Jets know now which is why they gave him the extension, it was obvious to anyone who knows this game at all that Mark struggled but that there were a million other factors in play to help him struggle. He was a good QB taking a big step forward in 2010, he took a step back last year but he didn't have much help around him.

Ah the over reaction of Sanchez 2011 performance continues...was he good ..up to week 12 yes he was ...but like many he was woeful there on in.

In fact many were saying after the Bills game that he was showing signs of moving forward...then the wheels fell off and he was attempting 50 throws per game etc...

If extending one of the worst QBs in the league and not making a serious effort at one of the best ever is considered "smart", I really don't know what to tell you.

Sanchez is awful. The jets will NEVER win a SB with him and 10 years from now you Sanchez homers will be eating you crow, guaranteed.

Manning said he wasnt interested, what did you want us to do, kidnap him?

Regardless of your feelings on Sanchez (and his extension), you have to at least be sane and realize Peyton didnt want to come here. He wasnt going to be an option, so we had to do something else.

thus we freed up space to help put the best team possible around mark. We also made a definitive statement to the locker room Mark is our guy, either get behind him, or get the fuck out. Its a good step towards fixing the locker room bullshit we experienced last year.

If I ever thought I'd be an NFL GM, I guess I don't know enough about football. I saw a third year QB struggle and look like a deer in headlights. In most categories down from his two previous years. Tanny saw a top tear QB enough to extend his contract and pay him (according to one NY paper) the top 6-7th paid QB. I guess we won't see a competition between Sanchez and MCElroy for starting QB. They cemented the job to Sanchez. He is quoted as saying "I am the starting quarterback for the next three years."

I'm afraid we will get the same old Jets next year. So I really hope I would never make a good NFL GM.

The locker room bullshit existed because Sancez is terrible at his job.

Even if Peyton isn't an option, there are surely other alternatives either in FA or the draft. At this point, I would seriously consider bringing Henne as a legit backup and take out Sanchez's ass the second he makes a boneheaded decision at the start of the 2012 season. Sanchez needs a taste of humble pie; he gets treated like royalty by that front office/coaching staff when he hasn't achieved squat.
