Whatever move he does make will have a huge implication of what we are doing in the draft. Although Mario will require a big contract, if we somehow got him for lower than expected, we could hall in an exceptional draft. Get a RT in the draft (Martin or Adams in the 1st), sign Braylon, sign a vet or two to put at Safety, this team will be looking very nice.
It would allow a TON of flexibility entering the draft. I just worry how much he really wants... If this somehow turned out, imagine a triple Martin draft in the 1st three rounds? Haha. Its about as likely as us signing Peyton Manning now tho. And as for Nicks, he wants more than Jahri Evans meaning he could want like 9 mil a year. Thats a pretty steep number.
Of course it would but that Ravens D was a whole new level. Besides Reed and Lewis in their primes they were dominant all around.
He probably wants somewhere around 6 years/ 92 with around 40 mil guaranteed. Its a huge number and I sincerely doubt we can afford it, thats why I said we'd have to pray for a lower deal but I dont see it happening. I wish Cliff Avril was still a free agent.... As for the three Martin draft, not so bad, Markelle Martin doesnt sound too awesome to me but Doug and Jon do!
Mario Williams would be cool but I don't think it's the best move. Invest that money in protecting Sanchez up front. It'll also help the run game out tremendously. It'll cost a lot but you can sign Nicks and hopefully a cost effective upgrade at RT (hope to catch lighting in a bottle with a veteran?) and then you have depth on the line (Turner is back? Slauson and Hunter, who has done well as a backup in the past).
Or even Mike Martin haha... Im sure you know how high i am on Doug Martin already so those first two picks would be nice. And yeah, I figured somewhere in the 15 mil a year range, which is obviously huge, but if Tanny really wanted him I could really see him pulling it off. I would MUCH rather see us spend that type of money on a stud passrusher than a CB like last year. I’ve think we’ve all seen how far a good passrush can go and how much of an effect they can have on a game.
Oh thats right, Mike Martin slipped my mind. I guess I was just thinking need. Tanny COULD do it but Im not 100% sure he's willing to get trapped in that kind of money. Its a tough situation though, if we feel we cant get a solid pass rusher in this years draft and cant find anyone reasonable in FA then what do we do? Try and trade for a player? I dont see one out there. I wish Avril didnt cost two firsts or I would say getting him would be a great idea. Its a hard situation but Ill trust in Tanny and his ability to make a splash.
It's time for the passrush. I feel like we either snag a huge defensive presence like Williams or we add an offensive line weapon like nicks and then we'll be adding TRich/DeCastro/Floyd in round 1 if Williams is here or Hightower/Perry/Upshaw if you go with Nicks. A third option would also be grabbing like 3 $3-5M FA guys at any of OL/LB/S/WR/HB and grab some sick BPA in a position of need that you hadn't addressed or trade back to 2 1sts and a 2nd or a 1st and 2 2nd's if your guy somehow isn't on the board. The very decent thing about picking where we are with this draft class is that it seems guaranteed that either some ridiculous value like T-Rich is going to fall to us OR there will be someone left on the board that we don't really need that somebody else will be dying to trade up to grab. Once we have a big FA I think we're going to come into the draft and make out like bandits this year on top.
Yeah comparing any D to the 00 Ravens is unfair and unrealistic unless you're talking about the 85 Bears. Nevertheless we could have something special here on D if we get that elusive passrush. RR always brings a strong D to the table.
Mike Martin is a beast, he has been improving his stock ever since the Senior Bowl. He reminds me a lot of Tyson Alualu. Big and strong DT who can push the pocket and stop the run. Watch a team pull the trigger on him higher than expected.
Dude I'm glad you said it. I've been thinking this for the last 3 or so years. That if we ever get that very legit pass rush going in here and fill out the depth holes this defense would look as strong to me as just about anything I can remember seeing besides those Ravens. If Tanny somehow pulls off Mario I don't care what you guys want to say about all the awesome different things we could do with all that money. That guy would make our defense an absolute freak of nature powerhouse. I know we could never do it but if we could somehow go like sign Mario Williams/sign some decent journeyman safety and/or WR/HB think about this scenario: Trade back about 4-8 spots with whoever falls to us unless it's something crazy like T-Rich. First grab Hightower (OMFG WHAT?!?!) if possible. Pick up extra 2nd+ and then proceed to draft best RT or G available and either WR or HB depending on whichever you didn't add in FA to round out your 2 2nd round picks. Then draft a 2nd safety probably or someone else cool in the third round and just fill in depth with all of the rest of the picks (i.e. OL/DL/LB/P/whatever). Think about that fucking roster.
Coming from a wrestling background he is strong as a horse and has very quick feet and uses his hands better than most D lineman. If he could transition to the outside with Ellis, Wilk, and Martin that would be a very strong D-line...problem is I dont think he could play in the 3-4
He can IMO but I think he is better suited in a 4-3, someone like the Rams or Denver would be an excellent spot for him to shine.
All the Jets need to do is fix the OL. Despite having a shitty OL, our D was still ranked #5. If our offense played somewhat above average last year, our D would have been ranked in the top 3 with a trip to the playoffs and probably another AFCCG appearance. I agree, we need to get Carl Nicks here and move Slauson to the right to compete with Hunter. Then draft a pass rusher in the first. Safety in the 2nd, and RT and RG in the 3rd and 4th. Pick up Edwards, and a safety (Landry would be cheap and can be better than what we had lately). Thats just three FA acquisitions worth probably around $8-15mil this year depending on what else Tanny wants to do in FA. He can also look to sign a RT in FA if Hunter gets traded.
I don't really see that at all. You can win Nicks and maybe try to swing out Slauson to RT if things get rough but to add both Nicks and Decastro just seems like overkill to me. We did invest a 2nd round pick into Ducasse, I know he has looked pretty crappy but we still have to give him at least one more year before we're writing him off as a bust and planning to cycle him out of the scheme. Until that time comes I just don't see how you're going to make that huge of an investment on offense with no attention paid so far to defense. On the other hand...if you could also nab a WR and S in FA in addition to Nicks I'd say you could go like OLB in the 2nd and S in the third. But that seems like a lot to ask of the free agency to get a guy like Nicks AND two other competent roleplayers.
Will somebody with any actual knowledge explain how much more cap space the Jets get with the Sanchez extension? His cap cost was 15 million this year before this deal.
