You can't cut lose your tackle if you know there is no shot you can replace him. It's stupid! Maybe he now feels comfortable that he can go out and get a better option at RT through free agency or the draft (hopefully free agency, I'm not loved the tackles after the top 3). And yes no sane GM would want to take hunter as a starter but he'd be a great fill in for a drafted future RT or a good back up INSURANCE policy. He was bottom 5 worst OT last year but either way he was better then Barry Richardson, and Jeremy Trueblood both sucked major balls. If the jets trade him for a 7th and the Jets pick up a portion of his contract he's not a terrible option, and like it was said here before 2.5 M isn't alot for a starting RT in the NFL.
The Jets best move with Hunter right now is to cut him and hope he wants to get revenge by signing in Miami cheap.
just trade him somewhere for a 2013 6th round pick! doesnt that help out our cap space?? same thing with scott. If they want him gone so bad just take shit for them. Also seahawks lb titupa is visiting falcons think he isnt too bad!
As usual the point I'm making is just nowhere to be found in your analysis. It was that being the GM knowing he's saddled with Schotty can make you have to come up with shitty half-measures to not let your shitty offensive coordinator singlehandedly blow up your whole team and potentially franchise. In the real world it's called risk management. You don't go all out on resources for the offense so that your offensive coordinator can go and put those resources on their own little personal Revis island because he has no idea how to create a system to utilize them. So maybe you guarantee Bart Scott's or Pace's contract on the back end to make sure that the core of your defense can be more developed in the years prior to this. Sure it might hurt you a bit in 2011-12 when they're getting past their prime and they're more of a liability than anything else...but that's a risk you're taking. Maybe a risk you're NOT taking is giving into unknown salary demands that a guy like Braylon may have been making that you feel just isn't justified by the market. So you let him walk and guess what he finds out he should've stayed and taken what they were offering. Sometimes one thing can lead to another in this world, and when you're not behind closed doors you just don't know. The fact that you and so many people on here don't seem to appreciate this at all tells me you've probably never seen behind closed doors with people making real decisions about things in business. Let me give you a hint; it's not all nice and fluffy like this message board. You're in a fucking dogfight and sometimes you have to make tough calls on the spot knowing that any big slip up can cost you enormously. Are you all really so naive to think Tanny's just sitting back there like "ho hum this Wayne Hunter guy....mmmm....I don't know he's not all that bad let's bring this guy back here!". Grow up. It's a lean market in FA. He doesn't really want to commit a 1st round pick to RT when he just changed around the whole blocking scheme to benefit Ducasse who needs at least 1 more year before being written off, let alone the enormous positions of need that first rounder could go to fill elsewhere. It sucks but he made a decision to invest a couple million to make sure that the wheels don't totally fall off if he can't pull a rabbit out of his hat somehow. I'm sure many including me think that watching Hunter play one more down as a starter is tantamount to the wheels falling off. Unfortunately like last year there might be a possibility that the only thing worse than Wayne Hunter is not having Wayne Hunter. I hope it's not the case but I guess Tanny thought it was worth the $2M to protect against. Now he'll see if he can dump the fool off for something useful, and if he can I'm sure he's got a plan in the works for his next move at RT. If he can't we should probably start hoping that big boy starts catching on quick.
"The Daily News has learned that Gang Green has explored trading right tackle Wayne Hunter this offseason. The Jets were engaged in trade discussions involving Hunter with at least one NFC team, but a deal couldn’t be struck, according to sources." Who are these dumb fucks? The Rams?
So placing him on the trading block now has a shot at replacing the RT how? And I am coming back to the same question again; if no sane GM would touch Wayne Hunter, what's the point of guaranteeing his 2.5M salary? Some people have to take THINKING class, obviously. I thought thinking was as natural as breathing - I guess I was wrong there.
Maybe he's only worth 1.5M to other teams. That's his value on the market. So nobody will pay him 2.5. You say Tanny is an idiot for paying 2.5. Well maybe you're right maybe you're not but he's only paying a million extra for having a known commodity. If they think that switching the blocking scheme is going to benefit the guy he might be at least worth the 1.5 if he can play backup.
What Is Tannenbaum Thinking? First he misses his opportunity to cut Wayne Hunter in February without any hits to the salary cap. Then he declare the "Human Turnstile" the starter. Now he is trying to trade Wayne Hunter....WHAT!!!!!!!! Who in their right mind would trade for a journeyman backup with a 2 million dollar cap? Last offseason it seemed like Tannenbaum was stuck in neutral signing anold Plaxico Burress, letting Braylon Edwards go and signing Derrick Mason and eventual cutting him. He needs to be hitting on all cylindrs this offseason because the Jets have some major holes to fill and issues to settle. That means a solid free agent period and drafting players that will make a contribution immediately this year.
IF there is no replacement for Hunter, why cut him? As bad as he was, plugging in a no name would be much worse. The big mistake that I think you missed was not signing a lineman once Turner went down in the preseason. At this point you know you are one injury on the oline before going into full panic mode, and no move was made. I think that is much bigger mistake than cutting Hunter with no immediate replacement or FA availalble to sign
Tannebaeums time has come and gone he needs to get the ax, this is New York we don't have time for this shit
Two things: The cap is going up in the next few years, if Sanchez doesn't produce they can cut ties and the blow won't be as bad. The cap room saved from the extension allows the Jets to adress the OL or passrush problems. They have options now.
Seriously? Jets fans don't have time for this shit? HAHAHAHA. We have all the time in the world! This team has been clown shoes for so long that this last 3 years has been the closest this team's been to actually being good in a long time. And like it or not, the Jets are front page NFL news rather than being also-rans. And that's thanks to Tanny. Also, check out the Sanchez restructuring. He's got something up his sleeve.
you bring up a lot of good points and one is there is a ton of holes to fill. I hope the Jets do not go after mega name players and blow the savings on one or two guy's. There are going to be and are plenty of Good players that will be able to contribute right away and wont break the bank either. Pick up your developmental players and perhaps a starter in the draft and for the love of god cultivate your young players rather then try them out and release them or let your division opponents take them off your team for pennies on the dollar.
All these other links are all citing the one Daily News report. Personally, I think it's BS. Would the Jets trade him if they could? Hell yeah. But since they probably can't, they'll keep him, and if they can find an upgrade, they'll cut him, if not, they'll keep him. It makes no sense to guarantee his contract and then figure out you don't want him anymore. That would be so incompetent that I can't think it's true. I do think there's more truth to the fact that the Jets are open to replacing Hunter. But that should be obvious to anyone that he was a weak link.
