http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2012/3/9/2857129/dwight-freeney-trade-indianapolis-colts High character guy, pass rushing stud, and would fill a desperate need of ours. What would be the most you'd part with for him if you were Tanny?
After looking at his cap figure, he is worthless to the Jets. We don't have $14mil to spend on one player. If we had that much money, I'd rather have Mario Williams here. So Freeney is not even worth a 7th rounder. Now if they want to take trade with Wayne Hunter, Im all for it. We can then try to trade Freeney away and if no suitors are found, then have him resign a new deal or release him.
I doubt that anyone is going to trade for him without assurances that he restructures his deal. Nobody's paying him that much at 32, and if they have to they won't be willing to give Indy anything for him. So assuming Tanny can run some cap magic, I think he's definitely worth a third, maybe even a second.
I wouldn't give a 2nd even if he restructures to $6mil a year. 2nd it too high for someone that age. 3rd the is the most I'd give for someone who might give us couple of above average seasons before his age catches up to him.
Unlike Mario Williams, Freeney is a one-dimensional DE in the 4-3 defense. He would never be effective in a 3-4 as either a DE or OLB.
He's definitely worth a third rounder... but only if we can sign him to an extension and bring that cap number down. He would be a great fit in our defense, and would ease our pass rushing needs. Also, he's from CT, so I wouldn't be surprised if he'd be willing to restructure if it means finishing his career close to home.
Someone mentioned this in another thread and ill repeat myself Stupid to tie up money we don't have for a past his prime one trick pony who has no 3-4 experience
Here's Bleacher's thoughts on the possible level of interest from Jets (which this plus 25 cents is worth a quarter): http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...k-which-afc-east-teams-could-pull-the-trigger
Swinnnnnng and a miss. Please define "effective". You could put Freeney out there by himself and he would get 10 sacks (when healthy)
Too big of a cap hit Has never played OLB in the 3-4 His best years are behind him. No thanks to any trade, but OK if the team signs him if he gets released. Can't see why he would play for us and learn a new position at this stage in his career.
Here's Rotoworld's take, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Colts are "fielding telephone calls" from teams interested in trading for DE Dwight Freeney. The new Colts regime has heaped praise on Freeney and Robert Mathis, but this news is hardly surprising. Freeney is not only dead-set against converting to outside linebacker in Chuck Pagano's 3-4 scheme, he's also carrying a prohibitive salary cap figure of $19.035 million. While Freeney is on the wrong side of thirty, he should draw plenty of interest from contenders with 4-3 defenses. Mar 9 - 10:23 AM
You could get Mario Williams for less than his cap figure. Williams has experience in the 3-4, is younger and wouldn't cost any draft picks. So I'd say Freeny is not worth anything to the Jets.
That's what you guys said when you drafted Gholston. Switching from a 4-3 DE to a 3-4 OLB is not an easy move, especially this late in Freeney's career.
ZERO. There isn't a team in the NFL that will bring him with one year left at that cap hit and age even if they had the cap space much less give up anything for him.
