This is exactly right. The key though would be figuring out the market for Revis without hawking him all over the place in the process. The holdout prospect after 2012 BTW is a double-edged sword. There are some really nasty provisions in the contract designed essentially to force Revis ro retire the next time he holds out as he will not have any leverage once those options kick in. The option that adds years to his contract at a subpar wage if he holds out is the best example but there are others also. Revis and his reps will have to have balls of steel to hold out again.
Was is the word. Do U not realize the NYJs are REBUILDING & will not contend for years to come. By the time they are again true contenders DR value will be zero or maybe even below zero so if U can get draft picks NOW for a team that is rebuilding then you jump on the trade bandwagon
You would really trust Tannenbaum to trade Revis? It's the only good draft pick he has made in about 4 years. He would probably trade him for a player like Gholsten or a pick he would use on a player like Gholsten.
First of all the Jets are by no means rebuilding, they need some more pieces just like every team in the league but they are by no means rebuilding. With a few moves they are right back to being contenders next year just as they were for the last 3 years. What would you be willing to trade Revis for?
The Revis deals the Jets shouldn't turn down if offered: DeMarcus Ware and the 14 (Jerry Jones might just be crazy enough to do this) Terrell Suggs and the 29 (No way, the Ravens didn't get into the top 3 by being stupid) Elvis Dumervil, the 25 and the 57 (Unlikely, the Broncos traded for Champ Bailey and have missed the playoffs 6 years running...) These are the deals they should seriously consider: The 2 pick (like seriously consider, the pick would be traded down a bit and then a shot at Matt Kalil or Justin Blackmon or even Trent Richardson) The 4 pick (One of the three above but much riskier deal in a 1-for-1) The 6 pick and 38 pick and a 2nd in 2013 (Only Dan Snyder would do this but he'd have help from the guy who traded for Champ Bailey) Those 6 are the kind of deals the Jets should expect to see offered for Revis. They all take value on the periphery of the field and either turn it into peripheral value plus a bunch of stuff or the pass rusher the Jets need.
I totally agree: The Jets need better depth in all positions. We are not going to win with some of our high priced players. The "win now mentality" has to change. Building a sound team is the answer. The Jets should take a page out of the Texan's play book about building a team. Tannenbaum does a good job with numbers but lack some with picking quality players. IMO we need to address the GM position.
i personally have not thought about trading the best player on the team but i have to admit - its food for thought in the right situation and at the right price.
I know he is our best player (hence our most valuable trading chip). Question for you since this idea is in your words "mind blowingly stupid"; what happens when Revis holds out next year for another kings ransome? He then loses value if you try to sign and trade or trade him during a hold-out. The team loses leverage. We are old, slow, lack depth (Mangold, Jim L last year), and have many holes to fill. I love Revis, I really do, but to have 25+ Million in 3 CB's is to use your words, mindblowingly stupid.
Playing GM I would want a #1 & 2 but would settle for a 1 & 3 knowing that we are many players away from the big prize & by the time we acquire them Revis skills will have ebbed greatly :jets:
Best post I have read. Build the greatest fucking defense in the league, run the football and catch the defense off guard on the play-action with a deep threat that can get open (not holmes). We would control the clock, limit Sanchez mistakes and bring us to the promise land. :metal:
Champ, you are so old. Do you realize that every team that makes it to the play-offs is a contender? The 9-7 Giants won the super bowl. The 15-1 Packers lost in the divisional round. Get to the play-offs anyone is a contender.
bc we have a defensive minded coach who constantly preaches ground 'n pound yet under schottys wonderboy system we pass 50+ times a game. Thus, killing our time of possession and keeping our defense on the field over half the game. Letting go of Revis would honestly be the dumbest, most incomprehensible move this franchise could ever make. Defense, Ground 'N Pound, Play-Action= Jets football.
Well I personally don't think the idea of entertaining trade possibilities is as crazy or stupid an idea as some make it out to be. The problem I have is 1. will anyone give up the value to make it worth trading one of the best defensive players in the game. 2. what is that value? hard to put a number on his worth considering he plays a position of less impact then most but he is a top 5 defender in the league. I really don't know. I do think you are on the right track as far as where that line should be set or at least close. I'm not sure I would take a 1st and 2nd only for him, depending on where the team picks in draft would be a factor as well.
And Revis might be on his way to being second. Deion is so far #1 it's not even close, so I don't think you trade away the guy who probably is the closest to closing the gap. You're not going to get an RG3 horn-o-plenty of picks and players for Revis. Our pass rush isn't just one premier guy away. You could argue that our entire line is decent-mediocre. Pouha is ok but not gr8 and you could make a case that everyone else is JAG.Rex's system and Darelle Revis make guys look a hell of alot better. Besides, then we'd be searching for a corner and it would have to be another premier corner that can cover up our piss poor safety play like Revis has done for the last few years.
Ware is 29 years old (turns 30 in July) and entering his 8th season. Suggs is 29 years old (turns 30 in October) and entering his 10th season. If I'm a GM looking to deal Revis at this current time, I'm aiming for a premier player who's also about to enter his prime, just as Revis is. If either of the two aforementioned players start to decline this upcoming season or the following one, then trading Revis now would be a bad move (except for the Cap ramifications). I mostly agree with the Draft Picks you delineated; but I'd try to include a combination of player & Pick(s) -- like the Dumervil package you proposed.
