So many possible FA's were tagged within the last few days. Kind of disappointing, I thought there would be a lot more people walking from their teams that now arent... And the safety position in FA became a whole lot thinner and shittier. I dont want to see Smith in a starting role again this year.
Mark my words, because of the Jets cap situation, you are going to watch "Tanny" try and sell Braylon Edwards to sign for a "prove it" $1MM or less contract, and perhaps a couple of other vet minimum contracts as well. Its ALL the Jets can afford and be reasonably cap prudent. You DON'T have $8MM in cap space like I hear all the time, because that doesn't include the $5MM needed to sign your draft picks and the $2MM you'll need to have in reserve for signings during the season. That doesn't even include signing any of your own FA's like Pouha. THAT's the reality, but it doesn't stop Jet fans foolishly thinking about the Jets signing players like Manning and Williams. It only goes to show how "reallity" hasn't reached Jets fans....yet.
Hey...cool story, bro. I'm not worried...the former Jets intern is gonna free up at least 15-20 million in cap space while giving us the first rounder they take away from the Saints.
What FA do the jets need to resign other than Pouha? You obv know nothing about cap management, esp since you were ignorant enough to say this before WE EVEN KNOW THE CAP # FOR NEXT SEASON! on top of having guys like smith who can easily get cut to free up cap, Sanchez getting paid a ton and easily able to restructure, Scott on the trade block possibly willing to restructure to facilitate a trade, and tons of other options. I could figure out how to free up enough cap to sign any of these guys and i know shit, imagine what a cap specialist like tanny can do. While i agree that the jets CHOSE not to pursue Williams, and if they dont get Peyton its because they believe in Sanchez, and not because they cant afford Peyton. Obv as a Pats fan you wouldnt know anything about FA, since the Pats dontsign any
V Jackson and Hillis both out there and could see up making moves to get either of them. If not 100% hillis and edwards
I'd be happy to see them sign Hillis and Edwards. They could get a lot of production out of a relatively small investment and Hillis seems like the type of RB that would fit into the Sparano style. Even though his style isn't that different from Greene, I think they would make a good 1-2 punch that could really wear teams down.
Jarret Johnson is going to be 31 years old next year and in decline. Sign that beast! It'll take the tabloids off the Jets ass for all of a micro-second.
Andre Carter and Mark Anderson combined for 20+ sacks, and Brian Waters was one of the best guards in the league last year.
Why waste money on highpriced FA's? They are nothing more than a 1 or 2 year stop gap measure anyway. When you can draft playmakers like Gronkowski and Hernandez, you don't need to sign FA's.
What would you prefer the Jets do to fill holes at this point? They can't fix all of them, but with a combination of FA and the draft hopefully they can address many of them. There's not a lot of money available to spend on FA's.
Yeah because the Pats draft record is that great. If it wasnt for PURE LUCK on drafting Brady, youd have a team completely incapable of winning, devoid of talent on both sides of the ball. and youre using TEs to justify your draft talent ? You can get a good TE in the 5th round, you guys drafted a good TE in the early/middle rounds, and an excellent one in the incredibly early rounds. And hell if you didnt Luck out on Brady, odds are they would both be considered mediocre middle of the pack guys. When you dont have wrs and specialteamers starting in your secondary come back and talk about how great your draft is
JJ is EXCELLENT against the rush, and perfect to rotate with Maybin who is a decent pass rusher and poor vs the rush. That would make JJ an excellent fit on this team that struggled vs the rush at times, no ?
And nobody saw this coming Total shame, guy coulda had a shot at being the greatest of all time if he wasnt a total headcase
Filling a hole with a guy who likely won't be around after next season isn't really filling it. Particularly given that the reason he's available is that his skills are declining. It really sucks to have a lot of holes to fill but it sucks more to pretend you are filling them when instead you are just deferring the decision for a year and getting subpar play back as part of the deal. The Jets need to develop some players here. They're terrified of letting their projects on the field but really that's the only way to develop them. Mike Tannenbaum says the Jets have Victor Cruz's on the roster. Well, earth to Tanny, if Cruz was stuck on the Giants bench he wouldn't be worth much at this point. Bringing in late prime to over the hill players to fill gaps is just contributing to the problem. Let Jamaal Westerman play LOLB next season. Draft somebody to compete with him if you have too but let him play the position. Draft a ROLB to play that position and let Aaron Maybin compete with him and may the better man win. That's the path forward at OLB for the Jets. Signing Jarret Johnson is just deferring the decision and probably getting no better performance on the season but certainly having less chance of a dramatic upside outcome.
I think JJ is giving Maybin a chance to develop/bulk up. I mean if we drafted an OLB early we would be FORCED to make him a starter. However if we sign a FA like JJ (whose strengths are Maybins weaknesses), and rotate the two of them, it gives Maybin a further chance to develop and to hopefully become a legit starter. Now since we have issues @ OLB on both sides, I think were forced to draft an OLB early anyway, but I dont see JJ as a bad move, but rather a move that will give Maybin a BETTER chance.
You imply that FA signings are never appropriate, and with that I disagree. But I totally agree that OLB right now is not a position that should be filled with an over the hill FA. You left out mention of Pace, who will almost certainly be back this season given his contract, but Westerman and Maybin also being on the squad are hardly at the level of a crap player like Hunter. Given the current LB's on the roster the Jets can afford and should prefer to go with a draft pick at OLB, and I would say a high one.
