me thinks he stays with the club. but i think he has been warned so to say that the team will be bringing in some fresh legs at the LB spot that will impact his playing time. thats music to me cause this is a great draft to dramatically increase our speed at LB.
Tanny already guaranteed his contract, so the cap hit is too huge to take, particularly since there's no one currently on the roster who will even be serviceable in a starting role to replace him, and there are too many other and more pressing needs, holes to fill, elsewhere on the roster. I suppose if he was hurt, or there was some other tangible reason to think he was going to significantly decline in the coming season, that might override other considerations. As far as I am aware that is not the case with Scott. The more apparent variable involved here might have to do with his attitude and outspokenness. I think this can be patched up, and the Jets can hardly afford to ignore the cap and contract situations of everyone who expressed some degree of dissatisfaction with the way last season went.
Jets can not cut Scott. Its just bad management if they cut him. Why? Cuz they take on an additional 1.3mil cap hit BESIDES what they are suppose to pay him. Then to replace him, even if they bring in someone at vets minimum, you are looking at spending ATLEAST an extra $2mil against the cap to replace Scott with someone who will be slower, way past his prime, was never as good as Scott to begin with, or a rookie/young LB that nobody wants to pay more than the minimum. So Scott has the upper hand here. He can sit in his chair and relax and get paid the $4.2mil base and not play a snap if he chooses to if he gets released. Or he can renegotiate his base down to say about $2mil, and get another $2.2 mil in relatively easy to obtain bonuses, something Tanny will be shooting for.
I can see him in Mike Nolan's system in Atlanta. They are about to lose Curtis Lofton to someone willing to pay David Harris money. They want the room to upgrade LT position and get a good ilb because they still have Spoon.
Why would he do that? The only thing I can think of that they can do capwise (assuming no one trades for him) is convert salary to signing bonus so they suffer less pain this year and more pain next year when they cut him.
Unless they can get a 4th or 3rd rd pick its a waste of time and probably an act of respect to scott to seek more playing time elsewhere. That being said im a huge Mauga fan. He's not ready to start. In fact our LB depth is the weakest spot on the team aside from OL Id like for us to draft some young blood to learn under scott. Preferably vontaze burfict especially with his slow 40 time allowing us to draft him later than previously thought
He has no position to play. With the spread offenses he can't get on the field. Cut him and move on. Someone else will have the chance to step up.
Scott is average, there is nothing special about him [except his mouth] London Fletcher would be a nice replacement. getting an improvement over B.Scott, CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please recognize that Bart Scott played in only 64% of the defensive snaps last season. He's still a great run stuffer but in pass coverage he is useless. The progression of Kyle Wilson has allowed the Jets to play more of a 5 DB system which has forced Scott onto the side line. Also I've heard that the way Scott's contract is set up it allows for him to be cut if needed. If he signs with another team the Jets will be responsible to cover the rest of his salary. Therefore if he was traded or cut and signed else where they Jets could save almost 2 million IMO.
hes more of an inspirational player at this point and can bring knowlage to other players he has no trade value. hes lost a step and never will stuff a lead blocker in the hole anymore i love the dude for his passion and intensity but when its time to go its time to go as for is mauga ready i dont think he is. he cant cover for shit either and gets blown out of every hole. Bart should just restructure and thats that. No value for anyone other than us.
I like him as the 5th LBer in our scheme. I like him as a rotational player. He plays tough the way the game should be played. And has a nice blend of speed and power for his size. I don't think he's good enough to start. At least if Im a HC or GM but he's one of those guys you shouldn't shit your pants about putting on the field in spot duty. Also has a good nose for the ball. Just wish he shed blocks better Its possible for me to like guys in respective roles. Not saying I want to see Mauga next to harris for the next few years.
Sorry, but your opinion is wrong As far as the cap goes, the Jets are responsible for ALL of the guaranteed money, plus any roll over monies that occurred in previous restructuring. If they cut him the cap hit would STILL occur. The only way the Jets could get out of this mess is if some team trades for him. And tell me, what team in their right mind would trade for an old decent run stuffer, who cannot play in coverage, AND comes with a cap busting contract.....AND you have to throw in a draft pick. C'MON MAN! The answer to that is NO ONE!. The Jets are left with 2 choices and 2 choices ONLY. They can keep him, or cut him. If they cut him, he STILL gets all the money AND can go to another team and get an additional million or two. If they keep him, it is what it is. They get a decent run stuffer, who will be on the field less than 50% of the time, while being paid like a top 20 LB....and someone who will be an unhappy influence in your lockerroom. This was just another example of bad cap management by a guy who has been borrowing from Peter to pay Paul for the last 4 years. Well Jet fans, the Ponzi scheme has been exposed and will dramatically hurt this team's efforts to improve, for the next 2 seasons. Its as simple as that. If you want, you can give Tanny credit for putting it off for a couple of years, and the Jets have 2 AFCCGs to show for it. But EVENTUALLY, you have to pay the cap piper. The Pats had to go through a 5-11 season in 2000, largely because of cap issues. They have lost players like Lawyer Milloy and Ty Law because of cap issues. The Jet won't be the first to suffer. But suffer they will.
In attempting to make some larger issue here, you overstate the degree of Scott's decline. He's not near as bad as you say. I concede Tanny has some real issues, and I am in general not a fan of his. In fact I think at least part of his job needs to be done by someone else. But buidling that case on Scott is a reach. Would it be better for the team's flexibility if Scott's number was not guaranteed? Sure. That doesn't mean he sucks as a player.
