Sounds to me like they want him to restructure and because his salary is gaurenteed they are banking on him loving Rex and being the leader of the Jets, knowing he won't get much value on the trading-block. Although now it seems like its too late to restructure as a trade has been granted. I hope he comes to his senses and restructures and stays with the Jets. I love his attitude and getting rid of our starting, vocal leader on defense, is too much for this team to handle now that we have so many holes and locker room issues. He sets the tone on the field and should not go anywhere. We need him not a 6th round (if we are lucky) special teams player.
Cutting him costs the Jets 1.2 more against the cap then keeping him. if he's not traded he is a lock to be on the team.
The only way I want this is if we can sign London Fletcher at a good price , if not I really don't want to lose Scotts intensity.
Maybe he was part of the locker-room frictions? After all he wasn't happy at how he was used and I can totally see him get into arguments with some guys on the offense. The front office wants the Jets to be a bit more quiet next season and who is the player that yaps the most? Scott.
It's also possible that the Jets are looking at people like Hightower as the best value on 16. Scott didn't have a particularly good season last year and he was on the sidelines for some of the Jets most distressing sequences on defense. This could easily be a year too early instead of a year too late going on here. I'm hoping the FO isn't looking at Kuechly and thinking he might be the guy on 16. Very talented guy but not big enough to play the role that Scott does.
Does this make it a strong possibility that we're targeting Hightower at 16? He can play every down: ILB on 1st/2nd/Rushing Downs and slide to the edge to pass-rush on Passing Downs. Not to mention, he stems from a program that faces elite competition and has perennial success. If value and BPA are crucial elements to Drafting efficiently, then I think Hightower meets that criteria based on how he can fit into Rex's Defense. **edit** my bad; I didn't see Br4dw4y5ux's post until after I posted this.
As much as wasted money sucks, if they genuinely think they can fill the roster with better talent by making a move like this, then I'm on board.
I'm trying to think of a veteran Tannenbaum has cut who went on to be more productive for their new team than they had for the Jets. Can't think of any.
2009 and 2010 i would agree but the 2011 Scott was not vocal and did not play well relatively speaking - and i could see him being a distraction
That is true. We have a hard time acquiring talent, but we do know when to let go it seems. Most recently Ellis and Cotch who both had more of a locker room impact on the Jets than we thought. Neither produced where I was thinking ma I wish we hung onto them.
Favre, Pennington, Weatherford, Woodhead ... You might be able to add Lowery to that list too. For the most part he gets it right though, and the first two had one and only one year of such play.
Regarding the bolded part, perhaps not a good season for Scott, but you are aware he still rated out above average despite that?
Fave and Pennington only for one year and favre was medicore for us. Woodhead was never going to be for us what he has been for NE and Weatherford was awful for us in postseason, he punted scared but for the Giants he was great. Weatherford was more on Westhoff.
