Yeah wasn't really serious about Hill, although some team will overdraft him just based on his size and speed, doubtful he gets that high but I would not be surprised if he gets in the 1st somewhere now.

My problem with our pick is I really want no part of any OLineman in the 1st other then Decastro, only cause he is pretty much a lock stud. I really think we need a playmaker on either side of the ball in the 1st and do not believe in drafting RTs in the mid first round. We should be able to fill that need somewhere else, either in FA or a mid round pick to compete with Vlad and Hunter.

I think the next guy on my wish list is Hightower or another Wr, not sure which one yet. I have soured on Jeffrey lately, too many red flags with him. I hate that he didn't work out at the combine, a guy like Blackmon can get away with it, not a guy like Jeffrey.

I'm also not sold on Floyd not going ahead of Blackmon, I'm not as convinced in Blackmon as I am Floyd, before the combine it was surprising to me that Blackmon was the consensus number 1 Wr prospect and I do think Floyd has at the very least closed the gap.

Many people dont like picking a RT, usually because its not exactly a sexy pick. Id love DeCastro on this team but Id be equally as happy with a guy like Mike Adams to fill in at RT. He would start immediately and make this line elite again. Drafting a RT would benefit this offense immensely, it would keep Mark upright, which would give him time to be effective, bring our running game back to fruition, and help us win games in the end. Its a very underrated pick IMO in terms of how big of an impact it could make.

Yeah Jeffery not working out really made no sense, maybe he wants to fall to round two to be a Jet? Hahaha.

Blackmon is the clear cut #1 WR in this draft, Floyd is a close #2 but Blackmon has elite aspects to his game while Floyd just has great aspects to his game, if that makes sense. Not a slight against Floyd because I love him as a prospect but Blackmon should be and will be a lock at that 1st WR.

So, for argument's sake, if an extremely talented center is available and has a higher value than a need, the team takes the center?

Frankly, I am sort of on board here though, every position (sans Center, K, P) should be considered need because it would eliminate the Jets and their stupid reaches lately.

I remember that draft - Gallery was being touted as the closest thing you could get to a cant miss prospect.

Jamar Chaney is not the problem on that Philly defense. They actually got better last season after they moved him to the middle. Drafting Kuechly if he's there would force the Eagles to move Chaney back outside again.

I think the Eagles are more likely to take Dontari Poe on the 15 or even trade down a few slots and get him. This is one of those cases where a team has multiple areas of need and I don't think the Eagles are going to take the ILB over the DT when their current MLB is more than acceptable and they have an issue at DT.

If there was a 4-3 LB to replace Akeem Jordan that was worthy of that pick I'm sure the Eagles would grab him because their LB's are weaker than the DL as a group.

My mother lives in SC and just got into watching college ball this past year. She would go with Ingram in a second.

He had a poor senior bowl by all accounts but his body of work speaks for itself.

And whoever said Westerman/Maybin starting at OLB... Did we cut Pace and Thomas when I wasn't paying attention? (serious, I haven't been paying much attention)

Thomas' last year under contract was '11 and he tore his Achilles. He'll turn 33 in June.

Can we get some facts straight:

    - Ingram was dominant in the senior bowl
    - Upshaw is not a bett prospect than DeCastro in any way shape or form
    - a team with tremendous needs on it's OL and defensive front 7 has no business drafting a WR when they spent 50 mil on a WR in FA.
    - Notre Dame hasn't had a legit NFL player, despite massive hype yearly, since Tuck came out. If we pick Floyd I will be beside myself.
    - Mike Adams would be an atrocious pick as it would be a major reach and the guy is weaker than dog shit.

DeCastro, Ingram, Richardson, Upshaw or trade down.

I concur on Adams, I hope we stay far away. I wouldn't bother with the 48.

With the 16 I hope we go BPA at a position of relative need. WR is definitely worth consideration.

If two great players fell into the Jets' laps at #16 and the Jets couldn't trade down, it probably wouldn't be because there were no trading partners. That doesn't make a splash and get Tanny's name in the papers. He doesn't know what to do with multiple picks. He only knows how to go after the sure things where he can be said by the ignorant legions of fans that he's doing a great job because he gets two stars out of every 6-10 drafts.

BPA is a very good draft philosophy to follow most of the time (upwards of 90%). With the exception of not reaching for a player, NO draft philosophy should be followed slavishly. There are always exceptions.

Taking a C would be foolish I don't care if he would be the greatest center in the history of the game. It wouldn't upgrade the team one iota, at least it wouldn't if Mangold is as great as most say he is. Yes, any position on the team could be upgraded with the exception of Revis'. That doesn't mean it's going to make much, if any, of an impact on the play of the team however.

If the Jets can't/don't find a suitable player for the RT spot, Sanchez won't survive the season, nor will the Jets' playoff hopes. If the Jets don't find two new starters at S, they probably won't make the playoffs. If the Jets don't find at least one (and hopefully two) new fast OLBs in this draft, they will probably not make the playoffs and will continue to get picked apart by opposing QBs who have all day to throw the ball.

I could accept getting a great new player in the first round at say ILB who would start taking snaps away from Scott and would totally replace him by next year. That would help the team long term. It isn't just about the 2012 season, but aside from Wilkerson how long has it been since the Jets have gotten ANY kind of significant contribution from their top draft picks in their rookie seasons?

While I would hate using their first draft pick on an OG, at least if he did turn out to be a great player, it would help upgrade the OL in future seasons.

I think you also have to look at what the chances are of being able to draft good players at certain positions. OL and WR both are much easier to find that elite OLB/pass rush prospects or Safeties. One then has to take into consideration the strengths of this draft and what next year's draft will probably look like. I don't know where it is slated to be strong or weak. Tanny and the Jets' Scouting Dept. should know that and draft accordingly. They'd better not miss with any picks or waste any picks trading up.

In fairness to Brad he said the Jets have multiple holes to fill, not holes at every position. Clearly and for different reasons this is an off season where the Jets are not going to be looking at C, LT, Qb, CB, #1 wideout, NT (if Pouha returns), and probably ILB no matter who is available when their draft turn comes.

I agree with you in general without necessarily in specific order that OLB, safety, RT and #2 wideout are major needs. Then we get to punter, a second safety, TE, #2 RB and probably a second OLB.

I understand the attraction of the BPA approach, but let's face it - if the Jets do not fill OLB, Safety, RT and #2 wideout with adequate people, they are going to be at greater risk of again failing to make the playoffs. There are quite simply not adequate people on the roster at any of those positions.

But assuming FA can be used for two or even three of them, there is more flexibility on draft day to get into the second and perhaps even third tier of needs.

Ftr I think the third tier includes a replacement for Folk, OG (even two OG's), ILB and an upgrade for Conner, who is just not that good.

I would prefer that the Jets fill the top two tiers before they get to the third in THIS off season, but would not be too critical if they miss on some second tier needs while going to some third tier, presumably based on some BPA situation. But if they go to some other positions, especially on the draft's first day, that will strike me as a major mistake.

The exception is Qb, of course, since my expectation they are giving Sanchez a pass for one more year does not mean i would do so, but I digress.

If a team has a good center and is generally strong along the line and the best guy sitting on their pick is a center they should be trading down a bit and going for BPA again. If there's somebody else available who is 98% as valuable as the center and is a need then obviously they just take that guy.

The danger is in taking a guy who is 95% as good as the BPA because he's a need. So what you gave up in that situation is 5% of the value of the pick because you needed somebody better than the BPA. 5% is a lot. Do that over and over and you wind up with a roster that is 5% less talented than it ought to be and there are some rosters out there that are then 5% more talented because they got the guys you should have taken but passed up for Mister 95% every year.

The Steelers are the Steelers because of excellence in talent evaluation and management and a firm but not rigid team philosophy on both sides of the ball that allows them to acquire players that will be good in 10 years for them if they survive the injury gauntlet along the way and were not bad decisions at the start.

The Steelers got rid of Bruce Arians this year not because the offense wasn't working but because his offensive philosophy was taking them too far off their core philosophy and that was effecting how they had to plan talent acquisition.

They want a controlling offensive set that features a lot of running up the middle and grinding down the opposing defense. Arians wanted Air Ben as the evolving scheme and so he is gone. That's because their core philosophy requires drafting one kind of player on the offensive side and Air Ben requires another.

I'm not even sure which statement I want to go after first so I'll just start with this: If the Steelers want to run the ball more and throw less, why would they hire Toddy Haley?

The comment about Sanu "He can't get open" has me concerned. We dealt with receivers who couldn't get open last year.

The problem with only picking according to a BPA analysis is that teams are not merely using the draft to pick the best player available when their turn comes around. There is the general context that the players picked in the draft will then have to fill a position on the team, and compete for it against current players on the roster. In short teams hope to IMPROVE their current rosters, not merely take the BPA.

Teams picking according to need rather than BPA may well in your example be leaving 5% on the table in regard to the pick itself. But if the player picked upgrades the roster more, by allowing for the replacement of current player, or of course no player at all, who was less talented, than would have been the case going BPA if the current player on the roster at the BPA's position is appreciably better.

In other words, picking a Center in this year's draft by going BPA, and meanwhile leaving a hole at, say, RT, will not improve the team as much as reaching a bit for a much needed new RT.

Todd Haley's great successes have been in offenses that mixed the run and pass very well. Staying wide open on the passing side but integrating a powerful rushing attack also.

2006 and 2007 the Cowboys used two big inside backs in Marion Barber and Julius Jones to keep defenses honest, which opened things up for Tony Romo to throw deep.

2010 the Chiefs became team Ground and Pound and opened things up for Matt Cassell to have a much better season than his likely results.

The Steelers will be back to Ground and Pound next season and Roethlisberger will probably have a truly great season taking advantage of that.

Hakeem Nicks ran a 4.6 40 his combine, and he's the best WR out of his entire draft class by far.

Guys dropping due to 40 times is ridiculous.

Obviously somebody who hasn't seen a second of him actually playing the game of football.

A couple of things: first of all, having a hole at RT and taking a C when you had Nick Mangold would be bad. If the Jets were to trade down and take Konz it should be because they expect him to play LG, to replace Mangold eventually at C or maybe Moore at RG, and to put Slauson in the mix at RT and as depth for the line in general.

Obviously taking DeCastro if he's there is a much better option for the Jets because they get to move Slauson around and they get a potentially great LG out of it.

Secondly, reaching for a RT is exactly what you don't want to do in this situation. Trading the pick down and grabbing a RT in the appropriate range is a perfectly good option but reaching for one because you need one is only degrading your competitive position. Yes you fill a hole, assuming the pick works out, but your roster is less talented than it would be.

Your competitors in the draft are also more talented than they should be because you let the #16 player (probably better than #16 given that everybody makes mistakes) drop to the teams behind you in the draft order and somebody went "Jackpot!" (Ed Reed) and took you up on your offer to upgrade their overall talent at your expense.

The best teams take the best players. Find me teams out there who consistently draft the best players and are not the best teams.

They are going to have new perspectives for this draft.

Sparano will have input and maybe even Tom Moore -- which I think is a great thing.
