Cordy Glenn- G- Georgia- In his second mock draft of the 2012 NFL draft season, ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper has the New York Jets taking Georgia guard/tackle Cordy Glenn with the 16th overall pick in the first round. Throughout the draft process, New York has been a team that few can get a consensus pick on. Offensive line, pass rush and safety have all been tossed around as first round options. Here is what Kiper had to say on taking Glenn: The Jets like to bill themselves as a ball control team on offense, able to run to set up the pass, and put away games with physical play up front. Well, it's hard to do that if you're 29th in the NFL in yards per rush, as they were in 2011. With Tony Sparano coming to town, my guess is shoring up the offensive line will be a priority (just as it was with his last pick in Miami) as the Jets try to get the offense back where they want it. Glenn is a really versatile guy who could probably be adequate at tackle, but could dominate inside. He could start there immediately. If the Jets don't go defense, picking a road-grading offensive lineman like Glenn makes a lot of sense. When the Jets went to back-to-back AFC Championships in 2009-10, they largely rode a combination of suffocating defense and "ground-and-pound" offense. Last season, however, the Jets struggled to run the football in part because of an offensive line that was poor on the interior. According to Pro Football Focus, both right guard Brandon Moore and left guard Matt Slauson finished 2011 with negative run blocking grades. And considering Glenn has experience as a tackle, it's also possible that he could start over right tackle Wayne Hunter, who ranked 72nd out of 76 eligible offensive tackles at PFF in 2011. National Football Post would consider the pick of value, too, as they ranked Glenn the 11th best prospect on their 2012 draft board. This from NFP: Had had some struggles in space as a tackle prospect, but in tighter areas where he can get his hands on linemen quickly as a guard he showcases the ability to dominate. Looks like a starting caliber OG early in his NFL career. Picking Glenn wouldn't be a sexy pick for Rex Ryan and Co., but it appears to be a solid selection overall at this point. My take: Well O- Linemen are never sexy for your first round pick but not many things are more important than a solid O line---especially with jumpy feet Sanchez in the pocket. The one thing I don't like about the pick is that it isn't a perfect fit for filling in a hole. Moving him to RT and him being "adequate" doesn't sound worth a 1st rounder to me. If he was a stud RT his whole college career I would have no problem. Regardless I always have thought going O-line in the first is always a smart move but with all our other holes and the other options at 16..it may be worth to wait until later rounds. GRIFF
I like this pick because its something different- not the bullshit Barron pick or the usual Upshaw pick (which I would love). He would be a solid pick, and if certain players are off the board I would highly consider him. He can play both guard and tackle, and I think he can come in day 1 and be a huge upgrade, especially in Sparano’s run blocking scheme. He would be one of the only lineman on the team with the body type to play in a man blocking scheme too.
With the news of Slauson's expected recovery time it makes even more sense. Who knows if Slauson can even play in a man scheme when healthy, let alone after a long rehab. I think 16 is a bit early to take him though. I'd much prefer trading back and trying to get him a little later if that were an option.
I like Glenn a lot. You can play him at both guard & tackle, and he projects as a plus player both run blocking as well as pass blocking.
Im not sure if he would make it if we traded back. His stock went up a good deal after the Senior Bowl and his versatility to play 3 positions on the line makes him even more attractive. I would love to trade back and pick up a 3rd and a 4th and grab Glenn, but I think that its too risky (being that he is the player we would be targeting in the trade back).
I like Glenn, He was one of the three I was choosing between in the quick mock a month ago for us (the others were Upshaw and Floyd, I took floyd). His power fits what Sprano wants, he's versatile, but his pass blocking in space is not a strength, which is why so many project him inside. The Senior bowl reports had him at so-so, which is not the glowing praise you'd like to see. I still like him, but more as a third option. At heart I'm a build from the trenches out guy, so I would love the pick even if being a tad bitter sweet about pasing on a OLB or WR stud. As for Slauson gettign a negative run blocking socre, I'm giving him a pass for this last year "Jets' Matt Slauson played with torn labrum, rotator cuff and bicep last season" http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2012/02/jets_matt_slauson_played_with.html Moore on the other hand is nearing the end of the road. Still a very good pass blocking guard, but the signs of age are showing. He's basicly the inverse of Faneca during his last year. Still a very good pass blocker but a hinderence in the run game. He been a good trooper but the time has come he needs to no longer be a starter on the Jets.
Fortunately, Kiper is a moron and almost never gets things right. Glenn isn't that good a prospect. He is a soft player, more of a finesse blocker than a mauler or road grader. I don't believe that Moore graded out negatively. I'd have to see that to believe it. Even so, he was coming off of a major injury, had a turnstile to his right, and one on his left for about 4 games. When the Jets wanted to run and needed yardage, they still ran to the right side and Moore made the Pro Bowl. If the Jets take Glenn with the 16th pick, I'm gonna camp on Woody's front lawn until Tanny and the whole scouting dept. are fired.
This pick makes no sense to me. Why would we want to draft a guard in the first round when we have MANY other bigger problems? RT, SS, FS, OLB, and DE are a few positions that would take priority over guard in my opinion.
I understand our need to solidify our offensive line, can we please just get an impact player at the OLB position?
Cordy Glenn is by no means a bad pick, since o-linemen tend to be the safer but less sexy pick, of course. But with so many other holes to fill, picking the best player available regardless of position (unless its a CB such as Kirkpatrick) isn't such a bad idea either. I might scream if we take Glenn over T-Rich, if he drops that far.
This. Only guard we should take at 16 is Decastro. Him, Upshaw, Richardson, Wright, Floyd, a lineman that slips or a DT like Still or Bockers would be better picks than Glenn at our spot
I've seen a lot of people say that Glenn has sloppy technique in run blocking, but never anyone call him soft or finesse. his play at guard in previous season was very much the road grader type of blocking you look for from a guard. His play out side this season was adquate. It was the speed and finesse rushers that gave him problems, not the power rushers.
If we can trade down and grab him I consider this an incredible draft pick. if we grab him @ 16, i consider it a lukewarm one. Definitely would be happier about this tho than when we drafted Wilson in the first.
Wilson in the first was a BPA situation. With the Revis holdout looming CB had become a need as well. I was not overly thrilled, but completely understood why the staff went in that direction.
I believe it is also a luxury to have Wilson our first round draft pick, playing Nickle corner for us.
Im not gonna complain about it because the kid appears decent, and I absolutely LOVE the idea of building your defense around its corners. That said its still completely absurd to draft a nickle corner in the first round. There are plenty of opportunities for it to pay dividends however (ie trading Cromartie after he has a great year and his values high) but I definitely was disappointed when they called his name. Of course a lot of that had to do with me being incredibly incredibly jealous of the Ravens who traded down just a few picks before us and got absolute killer value for it. Unfortunately for them they ended up drafting Kindle with one of those picks, but none the less
