I don't like the Weeden pick and I think you have to come out of the draft with a playmaker, be it RB or WR.
Care to explain any of these picks? Maybe some detail? Something behind your reasoning? Just a couple of players doesn't give too much emphasis towards a good conversation about your draft.
The in depth analysis makes this draft so much more appealing... I mean who wouldnt want a bunch of names? Sign me up.
zero chance we draft a qb that early but i love the kendall reyes pick. that guy came out of nowhere to have a dominant career at uconn and i think he'll only get better at the next level.
Fail. I like Hightower, but unless you see him projecting to OLB rather than ILB, I think there are better players who also play positions of need. I don't know Reyes. Is he an OLB conversion prospect or a DE? If the latter, no thanks. We don't need another DE. I like Weeden, but think the team has too many other needs to take a 28 year-old QB in round 2, but could live with it. Winston Guy may be your best pick imo.
I personally think that Hightower will be the best player from that Bama' defense. He would be an amazing pick for the Jets. You gotta get away from this pass rushing fetish you have going on right now. He would be a perfect fit on our defense. Just so you know, he could play OLB for us if need be.
Hate all the picks from round 1 to 3... I do like you took a P and the other needs in round 4-7 but the 1st 3 picks make no sense at all. Weeden is not needed here, especially in round 2 and we don't need a DE in round 3.
As far as Hightower goes, you could be right. I like him more than Upshaw. "Pass rushing fetish?" Get real. I don't need to get over anything. You and a lot of other Jets fans need to learn something about the game and the needs of the D alignment we play. It is the team's biggest need and has been for years. The two most important positions in a 3-4 D alignment are the NT and pass rushing OLB spot and the Jets haven't had a quality pass rushing OLB since Abe. That's why opposing QBs can pick the Jets' D apart. It doesn't matter how good your DBs are, they can generally only cover for 2-3 seconds. When the QB routinely has 5-10 seconds to find an open receiver (as Jets opponents' QBs usually do), then he's gonna beat you more times than not. Here's what Rob Ryan (Rex's brother) says about the OLB position:
I wasn't trying to insult you. I do understand the 3-4, I also understand that Rob has a different style of defense then Rex does. The first two seasons under Rex Ryan, we never had that pass rushing OLB. We haven't in the first three seasons of him being a HC. Yet, we still have had the top passing defenses in the league. Which is due to the premium that Rex puts on his DB's. I don't think those are his top two priorities with his defense, his schemes have been designed to inflict pressure in strong/weak side blitz packages. I hope that we can find a rush linebacker to make things a little easier for us, but where are we going to find us a double digit sack artist at? I don't see it in this draft, maybe I'm wrong. The Steelers don't really have a double digit sack artist but they find ways to get after the QB. Again, I wasn't trying to insult you by any means. I apologize if I came off that way.
Thanks for your apology. I apologize if I misunderstood your intent. I don't think it's a matter of Rex not thinking that a pass rushing OLB isn't important. I think it's more a matter of Tanny not realizing the importance, and there being so many other needs and holes due to Tanny's constant trading of draft picks. Remember that in Baltimore, Rex had Suggs, Adalius Thomas, Ngata and others who could push the pocket and create pressure. Also, I read somewhere that Rex really wanted Brooks Reed last year. That doesn't sound like a coach that doesn't think a pass rushing OLB is important. Imagine what Rex's D could do if they had a genuine pass rushing stud. Initially, Rex did try to create pressure through scheme, but for much of the last 2 years has backed off of that and gone with more coverage-focused Ds. In addition, the other teams have caught on to Rex's schemes. If they don't get a pass rusher with some speed, his schemes are going to have minimal effect. If you are right and Rex doesn't value OLBs to pressure the QB, then he's not dealing with reality, and is not the defensive genius that so many think he is. If that is the case, he needs to wake up and change his philosophy. I don't think that is the case, however.
No, I agree that Rex desperately wants a solid rush linebacker. No question, I just think he is that defensive genius who can develop a very strong defense despite having a rush linebacker. He has proven to be a solid defensive mind with or without a rush linebacker. It does seem to be taking a toll on the defense because of the lack of pressure we seem to be generating. So hopefully we do find our answer this off-season. My point is that if it doesn't happen this off-season I don't think it is going to be the worst thing that could happen, and I feel confident that Rex will find a way to still have a top 5 defense regardless.
For Reals! Why not? Position plays taken in the 6th or later do not often make the 53 man of any team. We have 4 comp picking incoming giving us 11 total picks. The Jets are not keeping 11 rookies on thier 53 man. Unless we are shipping out late round picks to move up I see no reason to not draft a punter if you think he is a Vaible replacement. ... or were you that happy with our punter last year?
I really like the hightower pick esp with a trade back, but will pass on most of the rest. In the second I'd like a dual threat TE like Dwayne Allen from Clemson. Don't know much about Reyes, but I think a DB here like Brandon Boykin from GA. He played corner, but should be able to shift to FS (a position of need). I know some mocks/services have him ranked higher, but I think he'll slide to the third. Bergstrom seems like a safe pick, but if I take Allen in the second there is no need for another TE. I'm kewl with Guy and Powell.
