He and Hunter went out partying during the lockout and they both overdosed on suck pills.

Too early to tell the implications. For all we know he could get restructured to say a 3 year, 4 million contract that that lowers his cap value for 2012 but also guarantees him another million in change.

I can see what there thinking resigning hunter possibly as a back up to just to keep a consistant line together instead of trying to piece everything together in the off season like they have done in the past. with the new ground and pound that they want to head towards i can see why they did it. But if they keep Mulligan i would be beside myself. Get ride of this F****** idiot.

I'm going to wait to see how the situation plays out. I think Hunter was terrible last year, but he has been a very good back-up for us in the past. If he returns to that role, Im fine with this. I also expect them to resign Turner. The lack of depth along the line killed us last year. If we get a RT in free agency or draft, and Hunter and Turner return as back-ups, we will have a strong rotation again.

As for the contract, the one thing Tanny definitely knows how to do is deal with the salary cap and contracts. Every year people proclaim us in salary cap hell and he manages to convince players to restructure and always frees up money to make an impact in free agency. So I wouldn't be surprised if Holmes and Hunter restructure.

It's too early in the offseason to jump off the ledge just yet. If however Hunter ends up being the starter next year, I will join the rest you.

I have also been wondering how to make sense of this, as have most everyone here. I see the main problem with your analysis is a point made by several others here - Hunter was not worth $2.5, and the Jets apparently had an opening to renegotiate with him, and seem to have let that chance go by. Now his salary, at this higher number, is guaranteed. In other words this stuff about restructuring and freeing up money was not an approach taken with the worst starter on the team in 2011.

At best, imo, Hunter's optimal role on this team is as backup tackle, if not on some other team. Unfortunately the Jets already have VD taking up roster space and under contract in that role, and of course VD is a big part of this picture. Since I think the Jets need to bring back Turner as the backup for interior line positions, especially center, the math starts getting tricky here. Schlauderhoff is also still on the roster. So the Jets are going to add to all those people another Tackle?

VD is clearly not starter material at RT. Turner is not really a tackle. Hunter will now still be on the roster and at a for him big contract number.

Nope. Can't make any sense of this situation. Try as I might.

My real fear other than having Hunter back as starting RT is that this is only the most recent and strongest evidence that Tanny is getting even worse as the GM. Maybe he pulls a rabbit out of a hat between now and camp, but I doubt it.

What the fuck Tanny, you have a rep to uphold.

If I were playing Madden I wouldn't retain hunter, I'd delete him.

Front office really making those needed changes. If this guy is starting next year, Ryan better check his unemployment insurance.

I have to assume this contract was restructured. There's no way Sparano is going to let this guy start. But after what happened with our depth at O-line this year i guess this isn't really all that surprising. He better be #2 backup behind Turner though,.. and getting paid accordingly...

Any why is that? He is under contract, we can ask him to restructure any time (whether he agrees or not is another story). My point is the offseason has only just begun. We have no idea what conversations Tanny has had with Hunter, or Holmes for that matter.

I agree that Tanny's ability as a talent evaluater can be debated. But the guy is a genius with the salary cap and contracts, he might be the best in the league. For the past three years the media has proclaimed us to be in salary cap hell. He always manages to convince players to restructure. He always finds money to be a player in the offseason.

No one knows what is being discussed behind the seens. There isn't nearly enough information to make an informed opinion yet. Like I said, if Hunter ends up being the starter I will join you on the lynching squad.

You're right, it does seem to be a backlog at the moment. But on the other hand Oline depth was a massive problem last year and Hunter has been a good back-up for us in the past. Turner has yet to be resigned, so they might be hedging their bets. VD or Schlauderhoff might be cut. I have no idea, it's too early to tell. So I'm going to withhold judgement until I see what else happens.

This is fine, all that matters is that he is designated a BACKUP. I would be pissed if the thread was titled "Wayne hunter is likely remaining a starter"

well the guy has someplaying experience AND he is now supposedly going to be part of a more block-friendly scheme.....

i guess that outweighs the knee jerk response to cut his ass.

but no matter how u slice it - hunter and ducasse, up to now, have given the jets an ulcer and probably dictates at least some of their plans in the upcoming FA/draft

Tannenbaum is brilliant. After Ducasse was taken, the next two picks were decent but nowhere as exciting as getting our boy Vlad:

30 (62) Patriots (From Vikings through Texans) Spikes, Brandon LB 6'3" 249 Florida

    31 (63) Colts Angerer, Pat LB 6'0" 235 Iowa

Hunter could certainly decide to renegotiate at any time, but his contract is guaranteed, so I don't see how he has the incentive to renegotiate. The time to leverage him into renegotiation was before this window passed where the Jets had the option of in effect voiding the guarantee.

That window has come and gone now.

VD is part of the problem here, and the Jets' desire to hold a roster spot open for him to be a "project" has a cost. Turner I think has to be brought back since neither Hunter nor VD are suitable as backup centers, or even guards.

Schlauderhoff I have not seen enough of to comment about.

This is the wrong way to look at this.

The Jets did not need a ILB coming off a season in which they finished 1st in the NFL in defense -- especially Angerer who is a 4-3 ILB.

A better way to look at it would be to analyze the OL taken in the next 30 or so picks.

Charles Brown -- NO Saints. He was inactive for 13 games as a rookie. Started 5 games last year because of injury. Gave up 3 sacks in those games. Season ended on IR with hip flexor.

Jared Veldheer -- OAK. Gave up 8 sacks in 11 games as a rookie. Improved in his second year dramatically only giving up 3 sacks.

John Jerry -- MIA. Got his first start last year late in the year because of injury. Not enough evidence yet.

I'm in awe right now. Barely holding back my anger. If they don't either restructure his contract and put him in a backup/extra blocker role or cut his fat smiling ass i dont think im gonna be able to watch this team. HE IS TERRRRRRRRRIBLEEEEEEE!

hate how this team can never man up to its mistakes. this all boils down to whiffing big time by drafting ducasse... pick up a smart tackle with that pick and were not having this discussion and we have more money to invest somewhere else.

PLEASE TANNY PLEASE!!! FIELD A DIFFERENT RT THIS YEAR!!!

I agree on all accounts. It's just too early in the process, IMO. We have no idea what is going on behind closed doors. I'm just going to see how this plays out before getting my pitchfork.

I dont see how ANYONE can justify this... All that crap about “just wait and see, he could get better in a man blocking scheme”- thats just bull shit. This player almost got our QB killed multiple times. He was picked on by rookies, OLBs who weigh 80 lbs less than him, no-name FAs... What can anyone see in him?

The guy is going to be 31. He’s been a backup tackle his whole career, and then he comes here and starts on a team that lives off of the OL and fucks it all up. This is like saying you can turn Eric Smith into a Pro Bowl safety. Its just not possible.

This is a terrible news (as it stands now) and guaranteeing someone that should never start a game again 2.5 million is just asinine.

But here’s to a good season, right?
