    Koz,

Thanks for posting this thread. It's a very valid question for 2012.

I agree that Orton will only sign where he thinks he has a shot at being a starter. If he signs with the Jets, that means that he thinks it's only a matter of time before Sanchez crashes and burns, and he steps in.

Orton's situation is very similar to Ryan Fitzpatrick's in 2009. It's not about money because he can sign anywhere for big $$$ because competent backup QBs are hard to find. It's not about winning rings either at this point. He can do that later a la Charlie Batch. It's all about starting.

Orton's been around, too, and who would know the competition better than another QB? If Orton signs with the Jets, it's because he figures Mark Sanchez won't finish 2012 as the starter.

I would hate to see Orton land with the Jets.

Sanchez will be the starter for the Jets next year, if he isn't Tannenbaum and Rex will not be with the Jets next year. The investment in Sanchez dictates that the Jets front office is committed to him. They should be and bringing in anyone else to compete for the starting job right now would be a huge mistake both in real football terms and politically for the GM and HC.

Sanchez is the Jets QB it's not even a serious question.

So, under any circumstances, you would be adverse to upgrading the QB position?

Heading out to work so I couldn't read through the whole thread, but here's just one thought:

We've been bashing Tanny for handing out 'guaranteed money' to players like Santonio, Bart Scott, Hunter, and others. While this does make our cap situation harder to work with, it also shows FA's that the Jets put their money where their mouth's are.

So many time you hear players saying there's no such thing as guaranteed money in the NFL, if they get hurt, they get kicked to the curb without a dime to show for it.

Have to wonder if a 'guaranteed contract' for $10M is just as good as a normal contract worth $30M.

Maybe when it comes to attracting FA's, having a reputation for giving out guaranteed money is a plus.

All I gotta say is, we were middle-of-the-pack last year, meaning that half the teams in the league were worse than us. Do you think no free agents are going to sign with that half? Of course not.

We will still sign free agents because with the exception of last year, we have been winning, and we are in a huge market.

I'm totally opposed to the idea of Tannenbaum and Rex bringing in a proven second string NFL caliber QB to challenge Sanchez for the starting position.

Sanchez may not be the answer but he may be and unless we are going to trade up and put a package together to get Luck or Griffin the idea of creating a competition for Sanchez with some former teams retread is absurd. We need a backup QB get a backup QB. That has no bearing on Sanchez.

The Jets proved this year they are not a win now team and need to start putting together a couple of solid drafts. Sanchez is a young QB with plenty of upside. No reason to panic.

Now if there is an opportunity to move up and grab a huge talent upgrade that's another story.

I understand the politics part here, but that part sucks.

In real football terms Sanchez has not done enough to justify having the franchise give him the starting job next year. There is also the point made by several players, that the Jets have been coddling him. Is that going to continue, with the same mediocre results? Perhaps if he felt some more pressure he might do better, and if cannot improve, that would merely be more evidence that he never will be successful.

Orton is 29, has shown in his last four years that he gets Qb ratings in the upper 80's, has a 2 to 1 TD to Int ratio, and ranks in the top half of the league's starting Qb's. The Jets also would not have to tear the team apart to get him, and no one else would be better equipped to get the Jets past the Pats in the near term.

Of course as Tanny showed with the Hunter deal yesterday he is not inclined to change course, and would prefer to throw good money after bad before admitting he was wrong.

But if one accepts that Brunell is not suitable as a backup, and someone else needs to be brought in, if one also thinks Sanchez is so great, why should me mind a competition with someone like Orton?

The Jets did put Chad through a competition one year.

Calling Orton a retread lacks credibility. As I said he is in the top fifteen of NFL starting Qb's. He's not even thirty.

The problem with getting someone like Peyton is too much else needs to be done under the cap to get him, and it becomes too huge a gamble. The Jets do not have the picks to trade up in the draft and simultaneously address holes elsewhere. Orton is the doable deal.

The Jets put Chad through a competition because the Jets didn't want Chad to start. Tannenbaum, Mangini and Shotty didn't believe in Chad. They brought guys in who sucked but the fact is they brought guys in to take the job from him not to compete with him.

Sanchez was drafted with first round talent. He is a young QB and lacks a little maturity. Those are not reasons to take pre-season snaps away from him with the first unit.

First off, the Jets do not have the money nor draft picks to have the ability to move up and grab Luck or Griffin. That's not going to happen.

Sanchez is in a position where he knows, no matter what he does, he will always be the starter. Jets need to bring in a legitimate back-up QB to provide competition for Sanchez.

Orton makes a ton of sense. He is still young and has proven he can play well as an NFL QB. Hell, he's probably an immediate upgrade over Sanchez.

Your position lacks the kind of logic I expect from a professional troll.

With the Jets installing a new O the last thing we need is a QB competition.

At least be consistent and say we should bring in Orton and hand him the starting job. Bringing him in as the backup to win the starting job makes little sense.

The Jets' need for a real backup does not preclude a competition. If Orton beat Sanchez out, Sanchez would be the backup. A very, very expensive one, but still...

Depeding on who would do better, he becomes the keeper for 13, and next off season they get rid of the loser, see if McElroy can be the #2 Qb, and if not they draft a Qb. And go on from there.

    Works for me.

I don't think QB is really an issue except for bringing in a better backup. Sanchez has earned his place so far and he's still learning the ropes, people act like he's a finished product at 25. He needs to step up and be more of a leader, play more consistently, but that's part of growing into the job.

If someone told you when we drafted him three years ago that he'd be the starter right out of the gate and we'd go to two AFC Championship Games with him playing well, we'd have signed up for it. Even if you knew the third year would be 8-8 with some growing pains. Too many people focus only on the last game and lose sight of the big picture.

So, because the Jets are installing a new offense that will automatically improve Sanchez's accuracy, pocket presence, decision making and leadership skills?

    Good luck with that.

I never said any of that. Brining in a back up and having a QB competition when you are installing a new O is a stupid plan.

The Jets need a plan B if Sanchez starts out 1-3 or 0-4. A viable backup who can come in and take the team over. Mark Brunell is not and never was that guy. I see Chad Henne here sooner than later. Its mark Sanchezs job to lose.

Seriously, why do you think that is stupid?

You would have 2 QB's starting on the exact same level and you would see which one has a better grasp of the new offense.

    I don't see a downside to that.

I actually think henne would be a good option for this team as a backup. He's solid enough to hold the fort if Sanchez gets hurt, and at the same time he wont be a threat to take Sanchez spot.
