With the news that Hunters 2012 salary is seemingly guaranteed as of today, it seems he is surefire to start @ RT. Obviously I know most of us would still rather sign someone and use Hunter as a backup, but you simply don't give a backup OL 2.5 mill guaranteed, especially since hes not a younger guy with promise. So with Hunter almost certainly being locked into that RT spot, should we still draft an OL in the 1st ? 2nd ? 3rd ? Or simply wait to the later rounds to get a guy who can hopefully step in down the road This is a bump in the road that im pretty certain nobody predicted, so I think this will certainly alter the way we approach the draft. It also means that if next years OL class is more promising we could grab our future RT next year and basically ignore it for the time being while having an extra year to evaluate Slauson/Ducasses's future
I personally think this is the worst move we couldve made this offseason. I just dont understand it one bit, and I dont think the FO has any real justification for doing so. He is literally garbage. I would still draft a tackle in the 1st 3 rounds.
Well the big question is do we grab one this year vs next year. I mean it seems that right now we are in the perfect position to grab that stud OLB with the first pick a safety or 2 and a wr or 2. Whereas next years draft im presuming well be drafting much later than this year, and not really alot of great OLBs on the table. Possibly a better opportunity to get an RT @ the end of the first then, especially with another year to evaulate our young OL guys judging whether we want to move anyone around. Thats kinda what i was getting attt
I really don't think this news should effect the Jets draft strategy. If a stud RT is available and a BPA we should take him.
Well prior to this signing RT S and OLB were the 3 biggest needs. Now RT really isnt a need. If next years OL prospects are more promising (I havent followed the 2013 prospective draft class whatsoever)then it would only be logical to wait. I mean if a RT is BPA and theres nobody available that could contribute immediately AND fill a need thats one thing, but the fact is we have other needs that are more immediate than OL where these players we draft could actually see the field
I PERSONALLY would grab a RT in the 1st 3 rounds (assuming value and a good prospect) but at this point I dont see the FO doing so unless this situation with Hunter changes. I dont think anyone couldve predicted such a move... so if this was up to me, I would draft a RT. But since they guaranteed his contract, I dont see it happening. RT is still a need. We have an incompetent RT. Guaranteeing his contract does not change the fact that he is one of the worst 5 tackles in the league.
Which is why we should take a look at Mike Adams out of Ohio State in the first round if Upshaw were off the board
We will need another tackle and a guard. We need youth for depth behind Mangold and Brick and Slauson
I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks this. The need for the Oline is still pretty high I dont know how much longer Brandon Moore is going to be starting at guard, and Duccase hasnt shown a damn thing. If there is an offensive lineman worth taking early on go for it
I think keeping Hunter at his salary means that we are either more likely to draft an OT or think Ducasse could take over. When drafting a rookie in round 2 or 3, you don't know if he is going to be able to start. I think Hunter was kept as an insurance policy in case a rookie/Ducasse can't take the job. With how cheap a 2/3rd round player is. We can afford to have an expensive backup with starting experience
I don't see Sanchez starting for long if Hunter plays. He doesn't trust him. If we can upgrade we absolutely must.
I think its the complete opposite. They GUARANTEED his contract. You dont just guarantee someone’s contract who’s already on the roster with expectations of him being supplanted by a rookie (personally, I dont see any reason for why they would do this). If they had the idea of a rookie coming in and possibly starting then they shouldve cut him and renegotiated, not pay him starter money.
Keep in mind under Sparano we will run more 6 OL formations and Hunter excels in that role (the jumbo TE basically). I could very well see us drafting a RT high and have one play @ RT and the other as the jumbo TE. All of this with Ducasse backing up those guys and have yet another season to prove he isn't a bust.
I think the OL can grow together. Give Hunter a little more time and he'll be better, I have no fear. Whether or not that's good enough will take another year to find out.
I think, not positive, that there was probably a clause in his contract that if we pick Hunter up for 2012, he is fully guaranteed. If we had cut him, we would have owed him zero. Basically Hunter's contract was a direct reflection on the wavering confidence in Ducasse. If he stepped up, Hunter is gone. If we still need Hunter because Vlad was that much of a project, then his contract becomes fully guaranteed. You have to throw a guy a bone if you put a clause saying we can cut you without warning. http://nyjetscap.com/waynehunter.html Ducasse strikes again.
