Which player (out of the possible picks by the Jets) are you really hoping that the Jets dont take? I nearly titled this thread "who is your rumph?" in honour of my mate who spent the whole of the run up to the Niners 2002 draft basically saying "anyone but Rumph, anyone but Rumph" and the Niners ended up taking him and he was a total bust - so every year we have a conversation about "who is your Mike Rumph this year?" I dont have one as yet (it would have been Mark Barron but with his injury that is very unlikely to happen now).
mike barron. wouldnt mind the pick so much if we traded down and took him later but it would be a reach at 16 especially after his recent injury. also dont want to see us take an offensive tackle here. we already have too much money invested in the o line lets grab one later in the draft or address it through free agency. so basically i'll be upset if we draft oanyone that isnt and olb we need a pass rush/to get younger at lb in the worst way.
^ It's Mark Barron and it was reported yesterday he has a sport's hernia and will miss the combine and be out of action for a while. So take Barron out of the equation for Round 1 and probably Round 2.
Heres' my players ranked right in the Jet's wheelhouse when they're OTC, some will be gone and some will be available. 8) David DeCastro, OG, Stanford 9) Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Bama 10) Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Bama 11) Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina 12) Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa 13) Mike Floyd, WR, Notre Dame 14) Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College 15) Michael Brockers, DT, LSU 16) Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State 17) Whitney Mercilus, DE/OLB, Illinois 18) Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford 19) Dont'a Hightower, LB, Bama 20) Melvin Ingram, DE/OLB, South Carolina Based on fit and need.... I would pass on Kirkpatrick, Luechly & Brockers. I'm not a Jonathan Martin fan so I would pass. I would take any of the other available players....DeCastro and Upshaw would top my list. The Jets are going to get a solid football player at #16.
I think we are picking in a great spot (of course it would be good to go a few spots higher) as we are almost certain to get one of the 6 or so players I am hoping for. Do you not think Trent Richardson will be available? I know its unlikely but RBs do slide as we saw last year. This is not to say I want us to take a RB in the 1st round of course.
Previously it was Mark Barron, who would be a huge reach at 16 (but wouldn't look too bad at 48), but b/c of his injury the likelihood of him being chosen fell by the wayside. Honestly, Michael Floyd. This class is so deep at WR and I'm just not enamored with him enough to pick him 16th.
Out of the players linked to the Jets I'll say Courtney Upshaw... because I think he'll only be an avg pass rusher in this league. Avg is better than nothing I know, but I feel like we'll have better options at #16. I think we might be able to get a good RT at #16... which would go a long way in helping Sanchez develop.
It was Mark Barron, that was really the only guy I didnt want us to take. Not a huge Melvin Ingram fan but I wouldnt be pissed if we drafted him. I like Upshaw but I dont think he is going to be a great pass rusher
would u draft upshaw at 16 to be a complete LB - bryan thomas' spot and address the pass rushing later -possibly in round 2 or earlier if the situation presents??
The thing is, I'm not saying I don't like Upshaw as a player. I just don't think he deserves to be taken so high... if you're a LB and you get drafted in the top half of the 1st rd you better make one hell of an impact! Therefore no, I wouldn't... I think he's a guy who should be chosen at the bottom of rd 1 (depends on the overall availabilty of talent). That said if we do end up getting him it won't be the end of the world (Gholston) because I'm sure he'll contribute.
I don't want any OLineman, I don't believe in drafting guards and right tackles with such a premium pick. Jets need playmakers and should be in a great position to get one whether it is Wr, OLB or TRich.
I couldnt disagree with you any more. If this indeed is a make or break year for Sanchez and with a new offense you want everything possible going his way. If Martin, Reiff, DeCastro, or even Glenn is available they should be the pick
Yeah I'm sure you're not the only one that disagrees with me but I just don't think you draft RTs or Gs in the 1st round. There is no denying that the OL needs some help but not in the 1st round. Bring in a FA and spend a mid round pick on it. Besides I'm not a huge fan of Martin or Reiff. Sure Decastro got stud written all over him but if you're telling me we got a chance at a stud OG or a stud OLB or WR, give me the WR or OLB every time.
Agreed 100%. This is Sanchez make or break year... he should have some decent talent sorrounding him!
Whatever the pick is it needs to be an impact player, OLB, wideout or even richardson if he is still there. I look at OLB as the most important, with a good to great pass rush it will turn the D into a very strong unit. My question is who is the best pass rusher in the draft?
Drafting an OL in the 1st would be a mistake. With the 16th pick we can get a legitimate playmaker, which is exactly what both sides of the ball were lacking this year... not to mention we already have two OL with lucrative, long term deals on the books. Either Upshaw, Richardson, Floyd, Mercilus, Jeffery, or Ingram will be available at 16 and IMO that's what the big board should look like at that point.
I'm not big on the idea of drafting a guard at #16 either, but guys like DeCastro only come around the block every so often. I don't even think it'll be an option, as I see the Cowboys taking him unless they sign Carl Nicks.
i believe vilma was taken at 11 and he was more the complete backer - albeit for the 4-3. upshaw does play a bit stiff but he is sideline to sideline and packaging him with harris has to give results. hey if the jets can slide 4-5 spots and still get him - awesome - but u have to be sure. i think he is a safe pick which the jets sorely need right now. at 16 richardson would be another safe pick on paper - also decastro - but u have to play him at tackle.
ur right - the usual order in the first round for OL is tackles - center - guards. anything higher than 16 (top half) has to be a tackle. centers and guards can flip flop depending on a teams need. usually these guys start to get taken out below 20. thing with decastro - if he can play RT than the pick makes a bit more sense at 16. i have not watched him so i cant comment on what he can do.
Typically you stay away from safeties and guards in round 1, simply because those players end up at those spots because they lack the athleticism to play on the outside. Should they flop, the franchise that drafts them really has no recourse. Should a tackle or corner flop, you can always attempt to salvage them at safety or guard. But besides that, Mercilus. Mercilus is a one year guy with a really raw game. i think Maybin can do what we would get from Mercilus. I think what we really missed last season was Bryan Thomas' abilities as a run defender, in holding at the line of scrimmage and weakside pursuit. To me, Upshaw has the ability to be a steady pass rusher and competent linebacker day 1. I don't see that with Mercilus. -X-
