Agreed on both comments. In 2010 Tone was a great teammate. I find it hard to believe Sanchez only was the cause of his displeasure. If the team wins, Tone will be fine. And in this new offense I predict we run more, but Tone gets targeted much more often down the field.
I know. I was just mentioning that the deep pass is one that Mark throws very well, better than the short passes at this point.
It matters because currently we do not have a big target for him (assuming Plax is gone). The games best receivers are big guys (Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson). They are the games best in part because of their size advantage.
I'm still a firm believer in Sanchez and Holmes. It is hard to produce with no running game and your QB having to worry about getting destroyed each play. Once we get an improved RT and someone to take pressure off of Holmes. According to Holmes tweet from a couple days ago this "new journey" has started already. Can't wait to see what we do in order to compliment our already established Jets and not try to start all over. Again.
ok i will buy that, but look at steve smith (panthers), coles, welker, chrebet, jackson, etc aren't big targets either but they were great/some are regardless of having the size
I agree here. In theory, it shouldn't matter if you have a guy like Holmes that can create separation and get behind a defense, but a big target makes a huge difference for a young QB. See Eli and Plax, Stafford and Calvin, Schaub and Andre... pretty much everything you mentioned. Having the ability to chuck it up and know you have a guy that can outreach two defenders is a real luxury and benefit. Off topic, but didn't Sparano draft and then cut Patrick Turner? Odd seeing as how we just re-signed Turner to play under Sparano. I'm not saying he's a big deep threat, but he made some decent grabs last year. I never understood why we didn't give him more of a shot downfield. Even MORE off topic... how the hell do I change my user name here? Is it possible? I made this name in the 7th grade and just started using it for every site I went to... looking like a terrible idea now...
I agree with this 100%. I'd love to see them grab one of the big WR targets in round 1 or 2 - there are a few that look like they could be very good coming out this year. That would also help open it up for santurdio underneath so he can pickup all that big YAC he's great at. Without a guy like that I don't see our offense improving too much.
The big thing with WR size is in the red zone. Say what you want about Plaxico, he helped us there from where we were the year before. Maybe we can get a big TE with our first pick.
AYFKM? Cancer is cancer. A guy who acts out when the team is in trouble will do so again and again. A guy who is a lousy teammate and has no respect for authority or the chain of command will continue to hold those views. He didn't get dumped for next to nothing by a bad organization without a clue. He got dumped by the gold standard and after he had done big things for them on the field in the biggest venue of all. He did just get re-picked up by a bad organization without a clue.
This may well be true but sometimes your circumstances save you from yourself. Instead of a knee-jerk stupid move you're forced to face and deal with your issues. I seriously doubt Santonio Holmes was our only problem.
BINGO. If they could trade him he would be out of here in a heartbeat. Nobody is going to deal with this headache. And the shame is he is one of the best receivers in the league.
Trading Holmes for something cheap was about the only positive thing the Jets could have done in this situation. Everything else amounted to the organization holding it's breath and waiting for the next shoe to fall. The Patriots traded Randy Moss after he'd scored 3 TD's in 3 games for them. Why? Because he was a cancer in their locker room and even though they'd won 2 of the 3 games he started they knew they had to dump him. That's what a smart organization does when a player thinks he's bigger than the team and that the team needs to conform to him instead of the opposite. Nothing good is going to come out of the Jets paying Holmes right now. It's probably the worst move the organization has made from a player standpoint since they let James Farrior go because they were switching back to a 4-3. The gold standard saw some talent there and the Jets lost out.
They didn't leave themselves a realistic out in his contract for this year. They have to hope Rex can fix it over smores.
Last year was the only time in Holmes career he was relied on as a #1 WR. It didn't work out well for a number of reasons. He's great when someone else is getting more attention, not when he's the main concern of the secondary.
Rex can't fix this problem. His answer to everything is to love the player and ignore their faults. Holmes needs a Coughlin/Parcells type who is going to slap him around and sit him on the bench for long periods of time when the ego outmatches the production. Of course neither Coughlin nor Parcells would touch Holmes with a ten foot pole at this point. They both got rid of better players than him (Shockey and Keyshawn) when they thought the guy was hurting the team with his on-field demands. And Keyshawn was actually a damn good teammate most of the time if you weren't 5'8", 180 lbs and stealing his spotlight. The Jets locker room next season is going to start out toxic under the surface. Everybody will know that Holmes shouldn't be there and that has a way of creeping around the edges and getting into everything. This is true BTW even if Sanchez is not there. Holmes quit on the Jets at the end of last season. They should have fired him.
It's not a great leap but it says an awful lot about Holmes ability to be a professional in the context of a team game. This is essentially a cap move and I look at it as a patient having cancer that has over spent on toys and can't afford the copay to treat the cancer. Ultimately it could be a move that kills the team and leads to the firing of both Tanny and Rex
