So he wants to take a more active role in the offense and defense... So what exactly was he doing this past year?

I was wondering the same thing when I read this. If he wasn't involved in the offense, wasn't involved in the defense, wasn't involved in the locker room, what exactly was he involved in?

Rex needs to be calling the defensive plays - in my opinion. Plain and simple. Pick the players, design the scheme and call the plays.

He needs to sit down with Mark every week to look at film and give Mark a heads up on what the defenses are doing against him.

He needs to get involved - not sure why this wasn't obvious.

I think a lot of guys think that when they become a head coach they have to have more of the delegator in chief kind of role - more like a CEO.

I think Rex was told by a lot of guys that have done it that way that he needs to be more like that.

Clearly it didn't work. Clearly he gets that.

So if that was really the main problem and he's going back to the way he ran things for the first two years than this season might actually just be a one-off failed experiment.

    Let's hope so.

If this means 09 defense again I'll be all for it. Lets hope so.

Rex needs to give his gums a rest. "I plan on actually coaching my team next year."

    Yup, this was my thought.

Ran the defense in '09=#1 in the NFL
split it with Pettine in '10=#3
Let Pettine call the plays in '11=#5

You could make a case there's more to it then just the playcalling responsibilities, but the more Rex lends his hand on D, the better served we are, no doubt about that.

I don't put the drop-off on the playcalling as much as on the fact that were 13th against the run because we couldn't fucking tackle correctly.

    That and our god-awful safeties.

Stop talking Period ,,,,,end of story !
    Stop making predictions.
Stop telling me / how you are going to be more involved in the O or the D (which you should already be doing your the head coach for petes sake ) and just go out and coach and win freaking games!

PS if and when you do go out and win a few games-----say 7-2 or 10-4 or dare a say it an AFCC game-----don't REST ON YOUR LAURELS and be happy to be where you or the team are at --as THIS team has done in the past ! It's about winning Championships not just about beating good teams or rivals !

I think by more active role in the defense, he means he is going to be playing safety.

Since he is a clear upgrade from Eric Smith, this can only mean good things

The thing Rex doesn't get yet is that coaches and GM's routinely get fired for getting to the championship game and then losing it a couple of times. Far from resting on his laurels for where he got the Jets in 09 and 10 he should have been running for his life to keep the job last season. Apparently he backed off instead and went and did things like getting bit parts in movies where he can be funny for a living.

Look at the NFL over the last 20 years. There are no coaches who have survived based on we were pretty good. Even the really stable organizations like the Steelers make changes. Cowher got his win and then one off season and he was out.

If Rex doesn't win a Super Bowl in the next few years he's going to be out the door. That's just the way it works. What happened in 09 and 10 gives him no leeway at all to survive what happens in 12 and 13 if the results are not what Woody is looking for. Same for Tannenbaum.

Yea its like they are surprised we have a coach who talks. Hes not going to change who he is completely after an 8-8 season. The thing is its not even like hes talking smack anymore he is just saying he wants to improve. Apparently every other coach who isn't in the superbowl right now sits in a dark cave until training camp.

Whatever happens next season shall be seen on the field. I hope that Rex brings back the Jets like he used to coach them back in 2009 and 2010. Not just defense, but the entire team.
