This brings up a good point. The Jets have made some ass't coaching changes which show some solid thought on Rex' part and (hopefully) a willingness to get away from a loyalty which, although admirable, could prove to be detrimental in the long run. A good first step.
and the second point about the window closing on this Jets team is even more astute. The 3 year window that Hasty points to is imo, the best estimate yet on what this team as currently constituted, HC included, will be capable of.
i've seen my share of jets qb's to know when to cut bait and move along. jets history is a lesson on it in it's self. sanchez is not the answer and after what i've seen of rex this year, it's time for a new direction. never have i witnessed a coach that outside of the defense, is so clueless as what rex has shown this year and the past two seasons. it seems he hasn't grown from the first season, which is scarey. sanchez has been what held this team back from the superbowl these past three years. he is a game manager, but not a qb that can carry the team on his back. he's not even a qb that can carry his team for a short period during the season because of injury. all in all, he's not a very good qb. he is what his stats say he is, a bottom dwelling 1/3 bottom of the barrel loser!
I don't buy that, now if you want to get in ratios then who knows, I don't keep track of the stats but generally I was able to look at the team objectively and know we weren't a playoff caliber team without blaming Schotty and Sanchez for every thing that went wrong this season. I also had no problem calling them out when things went bad either. To me most fans are realists because most are in the middle, they tend to react to the good with good feelings and the bad with bad feelings. Now there are certainly guys who post here who seem to enjoy the misery because it makes them correct. There are also others who regardless of how bad things get still think Sanchez is the savior and Tanny is a genius so the posts they make show no understanding of how the game works.
Being a fan of any sports team is much like playing the lottery. The mini rush of checking your numbers (or watching your team) never gets old, even though you've never won the big one. Enjoy the draft and the promise that it brings. Enjoy the games. Enjoy the post season if your team is lucky enough to be there. Enjoy the SB if your team is lucky enough to win it. But most important, just enjoy.
And yet you've seen [maybe] 1 championship team. Just because you know when the Jets usually move along, doesn't mean you know when it's the right time to. No Jets fan really knows what a championship team looks like because we've all at most seen only one. All we can do is put faith in our management to put together a winning team. What they say goes, wether we like it or not.
Your post is wrong. Most Jets fans loved Michaels and were shocked by his firing. This was a team that was putrid in the 70s. He had them playing exciting football by 1978 with a young team, going 8-8 that year and in 79 (for the Jets, those were good seasons). After a glitch in 80, the 81 team made the playoffs for the first time 12 years and then the same team came within a muddy of the SB in 82. That was a team on the come with good young talent. And they reflected their coach - tough, gritty players. When Michaels was fired, it was a big blow. We all wanted to believe it was the right thing and that Walton was the answer, but....... You saw how it worked out. The fan base was not behind the move. The team hated the move. I suggest you read the book that recently came out - Sack Exchange- The Definitive Oral History of the 80s NYJ. In that book, the players from that era almost to a man say that the firing of Michaels was the biggest reason that team never won a title.
I'm 26 and I've probably been (at least consciously) a Jets fan for around 20 years now. I remember the Ken O'Brien years, so at least the early 90s. I'd say at most times I'm a sunshiner, but when the pattern starts looking like SOJ, I'll be one of the first ones to say it.
Agree about HC & GM facing a 3 year window. I do not agree about players. Revis Mangold D'Brick Keller have well more than 3 years left However, I don't think the FO will ride this team, as currently constituted, much further. The rest of the talent needs to be upgraded for next season So i'm not quite sure about a 3 year window...I think that's a constantly evolving thing talent wise, and given the fact that the HC and GM are the ones who might be facing the closing window, I think there will be a substantial attempt for a long term talent upgrade, rather than a quick fix.
Listen I agree with you...in hindsight, firing Michaels was a big mistake. That was the whole point of my post. And I'm saying let's learn from history and not make the same mistake again re: Rex BUT...I don't agree that the fan base was against it at the time. Shocked, maybe because of the timing, but many people did not like Michaels and were thrilled that we were not losing Walton to another team Anyway, that's not the point. The point was to learn from history
Sorry I misconstrued what you were trying to say. Take a look at my post at #34 in this thread and you will see that I was making the exact same point.
I've been a Jet fan since 1960. I also was a STH for several years until I moved from the area. This team is definitely not the SOJ. Since Woody bought the franchise, the team has a regular season record of 98-94 with a 6-6 playoff record. The record isn't spectacular, but is a winning one. Six playoff appearances in 12 seasons isn't horrific. Also, the FO isn't incompetent as some posters declare. I'm optimistic that the organization will make every effort to improve the team. Ryan has brought a new identity to the team. He has made mistakes, but he hasn't posted a losing season. Ryan is learning the evolutionary process of becoming a Head Coach. Putting aside his loquacious personality, He has the smarts to succeed. I won't bet against him.
I have to say that I'm not sure what the initial purpose of this thread was but there have been some great posts so far. Having read the posts by James Hasty and DeathByJets, I no longer feel that I am on my own in SOJ rehab.
I read post #34 It is a good post. Patience is the key. Also, let's take it one year at a time. AND NO QUICK FIXES (i.e., no Peyton Manning)
Ah, great game to become a fan! I was already 13 years deep by that time. If you didn't live through the heatbreak of the 80s, I can understand why you have some optimism. Though there have been enough "SOJ" moments between 1994 and now. We should have beaten Denver in 1999. That was the real killer. I truly believe we were a better team and 10-0 in the 3rd quarter bears that out somewhat. If our veterans didn't suddenly get a bad case of the dropsies, we probably win the Super Bowl that year.
Ha, you are a little older than I am and even more negative about the team. lol I thought I was bad - but hey, if watching them for 15 years longer makes you this much more pessimistic, I can completely understand that. The young guys never really know what they are getting into with this team.
I am 25 years old...Doug Brien almost broke me...Steelers loss last year hurt me so much...But this franchise is pushing itself away from alot of the mistakes in the past and is desperately trying to win a franchise. That alone is not a SOJ way. Rex is learning and has to take control of the team. Lets see if Sanchez can deliver this year.
Keller becomes a free agent after this year and currently has a salary cap cost of $2 mil. If we keep him we will have to pay market value. Two years later, Mohammad Wilkerson and Kerley will want to get paid. Bart Scott and Calvin Pace will need to be replaced by then too. The clock is ticking.
As the guy who created this thread, i can tell you that dying before they win was never a concern to me. I'm 42, so I'm not an "older" fan but I'm not a younger guy either. I'm kinda right in the middle. And my entire point was mostly tongue in cheek because it's funny how, generally with exceptions of course, the older fans are a lot less positive and the younger fans base their enthusiasm on recent success. The 'negativity' you see in the guys who have been around this team for decades comes from watching them do the same exact thing over and over. Whether it's the front office, the coaching staff, or the players on the field - they repeat history with alarming frequency. And it's always in ridiculous "how the HELL did that happen" kinds of ways. I by no means meant to take a stance of "win one before I die, no matter how". I am more than willing to be patient, and I am even one of the people who is preaching patience this year and not making a stupid move by going after Peyton Manning, which a lot of people seem to be in favor of doing. I did, however, post that Rex Ryan deserves to be fired, and that wasn't based on results in any way shape or form, but strictly on the fact that the inmates are running the asylum and I've rarely, if ever, seen it get this bad and improve. So, the one thing I hvae going for me is experience and a much larger sample to draw my opinions from, and rather than hang on for another few years, I see this coach as a lost cause that I'd rather cut bait with sooner than later. I realize it won't happen, but that doesn't change my mind.
