http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=70487 It is possible, but not likely that Richardson is there when we pick. But we’ve seen crazier things happen come draft day, so it is a situation that must be considered.
If he falls to even the 10-12 range I wouldn't be at surprised to see the Jets attempt to trade up and grab him.
i just can't see this happening. I know it is moving to a passing league but at the top of my head lynch, stewart, mathews, and moreno have gone well before 16 and all were not projected nearly as well as richardson.
Do we even want to waste our first rounder on him? List of Super Bowl Winning runningbacks the past decade. Year Super Bowl Champion Leading Rusher Lead Back Rush Yds 2010 Green Bay Packers Brandon Jackson 703 2009 New Orleans Saints Pierre Thomas 793 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers Willie Parker 791 2007 New York Giants Brandon Jacobs 1009 2006 Indianapolis Colts Joseph Addai 1202 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers Willie Parker 1081 2004 New England Patriots Corey Dillon 1635 2003 New England Patriots Antowain Smith 642 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Michael Pittman 718 2001 New England Patriots Antowain Smith 1157 2000 Baltimore Ravens Jamal Lewis 1364 Excluding that freakish 2000 Ravens team, Corey Dillon is the only "elite" back that has won a Super Bowl. Everyone else is a sort of solid/rotational back. I think we're better off in later rounds or signing a cheaper option in free agency.
Richardson would be FAR from a waste. We should all be fucking jumping out of our seats if Richardson is there at 16. He has the most talent since AP. And honestly, you cant really compare our team to those teams because our style of play is different. Our WHOLE team lives off the ground game, and thats a fact. The RB’s on our roster have proven no more than solid #2’s and with a new offensive coordinator that embodies ground and pound, we need an upgrade.
Expensive, elite running-backs don't win super bowls. Thats because in the grand scheme an elite back is not much better than a serviceable back. Most talent since AP? Ya, lotta fuckin good AP did the Vikings this year. Imagine if they could use his $100m contract to address other parts of the team? We need two backs good at different things. A between the tackles guy and a faster outside option. I'd much rather draft a mauler of a lineman than a runningback which we could find in the third or fourth round. Or a big target wide receiver, or a pass-rusher.
So you would rather have a WR than an elite RB on a ground and pound team? Cmon, thats nonsense. I know OL’s have as much to do with the running game as does the RB, but a good OL and a great back would do this team wonders. If Richardson was there, which is a huge if, he would be BPA by a mile. No one would even come close. We’ve spent a 3rd and two 4th’s on RB’s in the past 3 years and so far haven’t hit on one of them. If this team wants to improve its ground game, Richardson would do more than that. He would probably make more of an impact than any player day 1.
With all of this running back talk it had me wondering.... When Ingram came out last year everyone said how great he was, comparing him to Emitt Smith. Granted he is on a pass first team, in saying that he was not worth a first round pick last year in all reality when you see a guy like HUnter in San Fran that has all the tools needed. Now is Richardson that much better than Ingram? Compare the two, I just dont see Richardson as a need on this team yet. Not in the middle of the 1st round atleast. Yes, this is a ground and poud team, I understand that. Greene, Powell, and McKnight have the tools its just a matter if this O can click to show case them.
People rip on Mike Shannahan now, but there was a 6 year period where he could turn my grandmother into a 1,000 yard rusher because of scheme alone. A solid two-headed running attack behind a good line and with a good scheme can easily put up the numbers we want. No need to burn a 1st on a RB.
If Richardson is there at 16, I really hope some team OTHER THAN THE JETS make the jump to #16, with their #1 and #2.
Sorry --- had to bump this because it echos my exact sentiments. The McKnight draft pick is starting to show some positivity. But I scratched my head so much about the Bilal pick in last year's draft that it started to bleed. Now we have to consider coughing up another draft pick in 2012? Why the hell couldnt we find room on the active roster for Woodhead? (there --- I said it). IMO, RB is just ahead of safety in terms of positions to draft right away. As good as T. Richardson runs, - he will only run as well as our OL will block.
I think Richardson is a lot better than Ingram first off. Ingram was never really considered a top 5 talent in the draft. And for Hunter, he looks like a very good pick for SF- he can run between the tackles, can catch, pass protect, run outside and break a long run. Other teams can hit gold in the middle rounds, sucks we cant/havent  But a player that I really like as a 3rd round prospect is Doug Martin.. He could turn into one of the mid round RB’s that become very good. ’ If we were able to do that and trade back to around 22ish and grab a 2nd I would be all for it. Yeah, the Bilal pick made me think “Huh? Did I hear that right?” because at the time, it didnt make sense. And right now it still doesnt because he hasnt proved anything. And I think Woodhead is overrated by a decent year last year... I honestly havent heard his name once this season, and what is he, like 3rd or 4th on the depth chart in NE? I am all for improving the OL and drafting a big mauler at RT, but Richardson would be BPA if he was there and he would fill a large need. And IMO, Richardson seems like he can be a RB that can put up great numbers with a mediocre line... And if we do make an improvement at RT some other way, our running game could be given a huge boost.
Quick, name the firsty year running back under Rex that did prove something? Greene had his playoff run, but only after injuries made him the guy. McKnight had the throw away game against Buffalo and that is it. Rex does not play rookie RB's. More so after they fumble as Powell did this year. The pick made sense becasue we added a back to give us depth to a offense that was and now will again be run first. You can't have too many healthy bodies back there and Powell should get a good look this year unless Richardson falls into our lap. It was a good use of the pick becasue we were adding depth while not needed it, getting value out of the pick instead of reaching for a need in round 4.
If we could trade down from 16 to a team that desperately wants Richardson that would be incredible (since cinci will def take him @ 17) esp if we can gouge the price. If not we gotta grab Richardson, hell take a look @ what ray rice did for Baltimore. They were the 12th best scoring offense despite having Flacco being a steaming pile of dog shit, and injury plagued seasons by all of their WRs. Now true they have possibly one of the best Olines in the nfl, but Rice also had 76 fricken receptions leading their team by a mile on top of being a beast rushing the ball. One stud HB can completely save Sanchez's career, and thats a fact (and no I dont think we should trade up, and yes I think we should trade down if we CAN gouge a team hard) but if not this guy can single handedly carry our offense. OLB however will just become a huge concern the next couple of years unless we strike gold in the middle rounds Best trade options if Richardson is @ 16 Browns (#22 from falcons and theyre losing P-Hills), Broncos 25th, Bears 19 (only if they somehow lose Forte), Packers 28th (little of a stretch). Pretty much if the Browns or Broncos dont bite there wont be any other demand to trade up to get Richardson.
Yeah I know rookie RB’s have little to no impact with Rex. In his first year here, we had Thomas Jones and Leon infront of Shonn Greene. Thomas Jones was a great 1st and 2nd down back and Leon was a great 3rd down back. Then Leon got hurt and Shonn had to take some carries (and potentially played his best football as a #2). In Rex’s 2nd year, LT was hot at the beginning and looked like he hadnt lost a step and was the best 3rd down back in the league. Greene was a good #2 back (being thats the role that he performs best in). McKnight had no chance playing with him being “out of shape” in the offseason, he’s lucky he didnt get cut. This year, our running game sucked. It was both the line and the RB’s fault. Greene proved that he cant handle the load for a full season without getting injured, and that he cant catch a ball and that he needs the OL to be great in order for him to be good. LT lost a step, McKnight filled in on ST and Bilal Powell was an unknown the whole season besides his fumble. With a backfield injured for a good amount of games, neither Joe McKnight or Bilal Powell could find a decent role on offense. I dont know if that speaks of the CS or of their ability. Even in Rex’s weekly conferences, he didnt even mention Bilal improving or showing signs of someone that can contribute. IMO, we dont have the answer at RB on the roster. Rookies RBs have proven that they can come in and produce. Its about the only position that doesnt take a ton of learning to produce day 1 in the NFL. I hate the idea of drafting a RB 4 years in a row as much as anyone, but Im not a huge believer in who we have at the position (primarily because we are a GROUND AND POUND team).
It was reported that the Jets tried to move up to take McFadden in 2008 and couldn't make a deal, instead they move up to take Gholsten and we see how that worked out. As I said above I wouldn't be at all surprised in they don't try to get Richardson if he falls within striking distance, it's the same guy doing the dealing.
Just a note....in three years of playing with over 700 touches Trent Richardson had one fumble. think about a potential Adrian Peterson who doesn't fumble. If he is there it is a no brainer.
Im dying to draft a young OLB/DE. Having Richardson on the board for us is so bitter sweet, 4 running backs in roughly three years is alot of picks.
