Upshaw is a better all around player right now, but Mercilus has more upside when it comes to being what this defense lacks as a passrushing monster.
I think Upshaw is the safer pick over Mercilus. Upshaw is probably the best pass rusher in the draft and comes from an outstanding program. He'll be an excellent pro and a hopefully he'll become the pass rusher we've been lacking. If another team grabs him earlier then we should definitely address the O-line....I will not watch another game with Wayne Hunter "blocking" for Sanchez
I agree Upshaw is a safer pick, compared to Mercilus, but he's not the best pass rusher in this draft. Mercilus & Ingram hold that distinction.
If we don't take Barron in the first and I hope we don't, who do you think might take him before he gets to up in the 2nd round?
I usually break down our pick in each round to players I'd be happy with that I think have a chance to make an impact. This year at 16 that list includes: -Trent Richardson if he miraculously falls or we can get a deal to move up without giving up much -Courtney Upshaw- we need to stop the run/ -Whitney Mercilus- has JPP upside with a chance of turning into Vernon Gholston. High risk high reward move but solid chance of him being best player available when we pick -Michael Floyd- I'm confident he can go up there and make plays as a rookie -Alson Jeffrey- Could work if the above mentioned players are gone. I like Floyd's resume better -Decastro, Reiff, Martin- Hard to pass up on some pass protection I could also see a player like Devon Still falling. This draft is loaded this year with pieces that can improve us and we have many needs. I would think most of these players could work out for us
Most of this thread and the poll has forgotten about Melvin Ingram, he's a strong candidate to be a NY Jet.
Don't sleep on Kendall Wright either, kid can get separation in the NFL which is what our receivers suck at most
Upshaw: 1. Produced as a 3-4 OLB at college level. (He fits the system without having to learn new shit.) 2. From Alabama (Yes. I love their program.) 3. A bit on the shorter side - but it shouldn't be the deciding factor over #1 and #2 4. Combine, we'll see. Senior bowl - he had a very nice outing. I like Upshaw. A lot.
Me too, would be my top choice for the Jets first round pick at this time. 6'2 is fine for an OLB, Upshaw has active hands and is very strong.
I'm glad Ingram is doing well, but I dont know if he is my top option for the Jets. He seems a little one dimensional for a guy who is going to play linebacker. Love his pass rush ability, but I think he has some limitations. As time goes on I think Im liking the idea more of drafting Upshaw, even though he wouldnt be the best pass rusher available
its funny how quickly things change in the draft - 3 possible selections by the Jets (Ingram, Adams, Richardson) dont even appear as options on the poll! most mocks I have seen recently have Upshaw going to the Bills.
I'd take best player available who is not a C, LT or CB. Upshaw looks good and he could play either OLB but he might well be Bart Scott's replacement instead.
I could see Upshaw playing OLB this year and then moving inside next year primarily because he isnt the elite passrusher that is needed. But I would say its more probable that he stays outside. Donta Hightower would be the player to switch inside as Barts replacement if that was what we are considering.
I believe one of these four prospects will be there when we pick at 16. Here's my order of preference: 1. Trent Richardson 2. Mike Adams 3. Melvin Ingram 4. Nick Perry
I am fully behind loading up on passrushers now. I cant see us passing up on a passrusher unless Trich falls or we decide on an OLman. After seeing what a good passrush can do to Brady and any other team, I just dont see how the FO could justify a different pick.
What do you guys think about Mike Adams? Ohio State Lineman have been proving themselves lately. I'm not opposed to a linebacker or wide receiver in round one but this guy with a good combine to follow up his senior bowl performance can end up pretty high on our big board. He is an instant upgrade over Wayne Hunter and would fill a hole on the line which is needed.
As i noted above, he is a player that is getting a few mentions on the mocks as a potential jets pick. His stock is really high after the senior bowl and so would not be a bad pick or a reach. I think we will go OLB/OL in rounds 1 and 2
at this point its gotta be LB and either upshaw or ingram..... i do think the jets will move back into the 1st round or somehow garner another 2nd round choice. the chance of another quality LB or WR being there high in round 2 is real. having those supp picks gives a bit of wiggle room this year and i know they can't be traded but of course, your initial picks can. i am counting on 2 LB picks this year in the first 3 rounds. dont think they go RB unless its a steal. the ducasse pick of last year forces their hand on another OL this year and of course the WR situation also begs a move. even with a move or 2 the jets will have at least 6 draftees and likely 7.
