Well you definitely dont have to worry about him winning 4 playoff games in his first 2 years. Thats for sure
Yeah, here's the thing about the playoffs... I've been a Dolphin fan since about '68. Through the 70s, 80s, and 90s we made the playoffs on a pretty regular basis. But except for the 2 wins in SB VII and VIII, we came up short every time. Winning playoff games kinda lost its luster somewhere along the way without SB wins to go with it. But I understand your excitement about getting to the AFC championship game a couple of times. You guys went through a pretty severe drought and some very rough seasons. But between those two games and today is a season in which your team collapsed behind locker room divisions and the comical antics of your head coach. Maybe a year ago you had something to crow about, but right now you're a fan of a mediocre team that didn't make the playoffs ...as am I.
The funniest thing about our so called collapse is we ended up 8-8. That 8-8 also instilled big changes happening which shows the team can learn. And playoffs are something you can build off of with a young qb and coach combo. The NY media is the toughest to coach/gm in because no year should ever be a rebuilding year, it is unacceptable. If they didn't start out hot, Rex might not have been here knowing Woody and how the NY media loves calling for coaches to be gone and players to be gone.
C'mmon man. If you are trying to compare the dolphins to the jets in any way where both are on the same level, you are out of your mind. By the way, we all remember Don Shula. We get it. You guys won some games two decades ago.
Another funny thing you can point out to our resident Dolphin fan : Before we fell to 8-8, we were 8-5. What was the Dolphin's record again? Exactly.
Sorry guys... my mistake. You're an elite 8-8 team ...that got knocked out playoff contention by a team that's not at all on your level.
No one said we were elite. Also, we got knocked out by a couple of things. By the way the Dolphins blow. Enjoy fighting Buffalo for 4th place for the foreseeable future.
The dolphins are a decent team but wont have any shot at reaching the superbowl for the forseable future, as much critisim as we have we do have the pieces to put together a super bowl team.
Funny how you guys credit Sanchez with winning 4 playoff games but when he played like crap going 0-3 down the stretch this year it was all the fault of Shotty, Oline and the defense. Those playoff games are ancient history.
Tony's going to "dumb down" the offense for Sanchez:wink: Tone's due 12 mil this year as your #1 wide out...good luck building your QB coach comb.
I would say that is what the Jets need. Rex even said the verbage in the Schotty offense was too much, and it was confusing. I think man to man blocking and a strong run game + play action is perfect for Sanchez. As posted either earlier in this thread or another, Steve Young said a lot of the plays designed didn't help open up Holmes and Mark Sanchez wasn't put on the move enough to implement how good Holmes is at improvising and breaking off routes when the QB is extending the play. Not sure if you saw 2 years ago when Tone was a perfect teammate, but people can change as we saw Tone did this season. Also, not sure what the money has to do with anything. They still have much cap room to improve the O line and WR core around Sanchez.
Well, you seemed out of sorts when I said you were mediocre. And while things didn't fall in place for you on that last Sunday of the season, the first thing that knocked you out was losing to the Dolphins (you know, the team that blows). That happened before the Tennessee game was over and when Houston was still within hope for a win. Also, in the last two years, the best you've been able to do is split games with that team that blows. And the year before that, the team that blows beat you twice. Since Rex took over the head coaching job, you're 3-5 against the team that blows. I don't disagree with your assessment of the Phins. We've got some pieces but the big picture hasn't come into focus yet. We're a ways off. However, I think you might be painting a rosier picture of the Jets than they deserve. Too much has come out about Holmes for me not to believe everything we've heard about him being a cancer is true. For salary cap reasons, that problem isn't going away anytime soon unless you find some club willing to take him off your hands. The Jets are going into next season with the same divisions in the locker room that they had this year and nothing Rex has said so far makes me think he's going to treat Holmes any different that he did last year. So with Holmes back, you're going to have to hope that the divisions don't get worse. But the reality is that players are going to take sides: Holmes v. Sanchez. The only way that's going to heal itself next year is if Sanchez starts playing at a higher level and with some consistency. Can Sparano make that happen? I don't know ...but I do know that while he was the head coach of the Phins, they were a pretty inconsistent offensive team. Is it possible to get to a SB with all that crap going on? Yes. Does it make it more difficult to get to a SB with all that crap going on? That answer is "yes" also. You guys have some pieces but you also have some problems. Having to play a 2nd place schedule next year should allow you to compete for the division title but I don't see another AFC championship game for you next year. And if next year is a flop, you'll be looking for Sanchez's replacement and you'll be dumping Holmes. Like I said, your picture might be rosier than it deserves.
I'd put the Jets and Dolphins on the same level right now. The Jets finished with a better record but they sputtered to the finish whereas the Dolphins went on a roll. They're showing some improvement, and the Jets are presently in a downward spiral. Very hard to say we're better at this stage.
Why, as a Dolphin fan shouldn't you want that? As any fan of every other AFC team, you should be praying for the Jets to start Sanchez or another qb like Sanchez. Now that Schotty is fucking up Bradford's career, it's arguably the only chance the rest of the AFC has to stop the Jets...
At the end of the day, you can snuggle up to and hold tight to the head to head record, sure - all the while your team racked up an overall record of 20-28 for the same time frame. Look, you come on here bringing your pessimistic conversation about why two afc championship games don't mean much, an 8-8 season with turmoil might signal the begining of the end for Rex, Sanchez, Holmes, etc (and to top it off your a Dolphins fan). Yet somehow the dolphins are a mediocre team. No one expects you to be reasonable or even rational, but you could be barking up the wrong tree with all of this anti-jets, belittle their recent accomplishments, nonsense.
With an 8-8 season between those games and today, they don't mean much at all. It's history. I could be. But the reality is that today your team is heading in the wrong direction.
