Jets hire Cavanaugh as QB coach (old thread from 2009)

I didnt want to create a new thread for this but it appears Cavanaugh is returning next season it seems

Somethings confusing....

 

I don't think I like Cavanaugh staying as the QB coach. Sanchez mechanics are all messed up and Cavanaugh is the one responsible for making sure that is not the case.

Actually I don't think I like the idea of the Jets trying to turn Sanchez into a prototypical pocket QB at all. He's obviously a scrambler. If they want to get best value out of him they should be encouraging that instead of lining him up in the shotgun,

 

I think they'll probably keep Cavanaugh around for a season for continuity just to keep Sanchez from burying his head in the sand. Then they'll upgrade that coaching position after next season if need be.

If they were going to cut Cavanaugh loose, I think they'd have done so already. Rex knows Cavanaugh from Baltimore. He wouldn't hang him out to dry like this if he was going to cut him loose.

The wildcard is if there is a coach on one of the teams still playing that they have their eye on and who may come available. They could also hire an asst QB coach they could bring in to make the transition more seamless.

 

There was an article on ESPN saying our #1 target is Brian Daboll who coached QBs here for 2 years. If the Dolphins fire him once they get their new HC we'll probably hire him.

 

Cavanaugh will probably go but I am pretty sure he didn't teach him to have happy feet or look at one receiver or change every single play at the line or throw off his back foot..in fact I am real sure he didn't so you can bring in anybody you want and it won't make a difference until and unless Sanchez gets his head out of his ass,

 

It's hard to say what effect (a?) Cav had or didn't have on happy feet since we don't really know how bad or good Mark really was or is.

A few things Mark has gotten better at is protecting the ball....remember his first year running around like a wounded chicken with the ball flaling around like it was a hot potato?

Plus Mark tends to 'slide' now vs taking on 280lb LB'rs head first, although some of his most memorable plays happened this way.

With Tone double/triple teamed and Keller/Plax gaining NO sepeartion 90% of the time plus Turner sending d-lineman right at Dirty it was hard to teach him anything about going though his progressions. How many 'progressions' can you go through when your taking a viscious hit before the ball's even settled in your hands?

Last, that 'passing phenome' from Green Bay looked pretty bad in the face of a solid pass rush combined with receivers dropping the ball(s).

Mark dealt with that shit all year.

 

If they fired Schottenheimer because Sanchez hasn't progressed enough (and I'm pretty sure that was the reason, not the playcalling,) then Cavanaugh deserves to go as well. It's as much his fault as it was Schotty's.

 

How has Mark gottn better at protecting the ball? He fumbled the ball 10 times and lost it 8 times this year? Mark has gottn better at nothing and he won't be in this league in 2 years.

 

Fumbles for a QB is alot different than fumbles for a WR, HB, TE etc.

A lot of it has to do with the protection from the oline, his hb, how quickly receivers get open, and hell even the timing of when he gets hit depending on when he was getting ready to throw it.

I dont know if I can say that he got better (or worse) at protecting it, but I personally think fumbles isn't a reliable stat whatsoever when it comes to QBs

 

He won't be in the league in 2 years? Sanchez is a 3 year pro that came out early. That was forced to deal with at least two malcontent wide receivers and a shit oc.
Cut the guy a little slack.

 

the sheer amount of dumb fuckery in this post is astounding. even if this is his last year on the Jets, which I doubt, there are plenty of teams that he would be given a starters shot on for at least two years. and if he didn't get a third shot as a starter right away he would be a back up for a few years before he would undoubtedly get another shot.

even if he doesn't fulfill his promise with the Jets Sanchez easily will find teams to play for for the next decade.

The only three offensive coaches that left were Callahan, Ellard and Schotty.

 

well said and I agree. I see Dabol coming in as QB coach is Joe Philbin lets him go for his own guy. I also see Henne coming in to compete with Sanchez in camp. if so, let the best QB win the starting job. A real competition will benefit the Jets greatly! Time to STOP awarding Sanchez the job just because of where he was drafted. Make him go out and earn the job!

 

absolutely correct re Sanchez. many teams in Canada and the Arena League could be interested in him! Can he play TE?

 

After listening to the Jets/fans conference yesterday, I am not sure Tanny or Rex learned one of the important lessons from last season. I know Mark will be back, and rightly so, he deserves one more year with the new O/C. This coming year is make or break for Mark, he has to progress this coming season or it time to move on.

The mistake I think the Jets are making is is to say right from the start that Mark will be the starter. Respected players and maybe coaches as well have told them Mark has issues (pampered, coddle, protected, handled with kid gloves ).

What I would have much rather heard was
" We hope that Mark will be our starter as we have envisioned him to be, but this season Mark will have strong competition behind him fighting for his job. Mark will have to really step up this year in order to maintain his leadership role on the Jets. Again, we are confident this will be the case, but after this passed season ,everyone has to earn there jobs and that includes Mark"

I always have to preface my statments with I NEVER WANTED SANCHEZ...

But, isn't the kid gloves thing over played a bit...

In year 1 he had competition and they decided it was best to give him the keys.

Year 2 maybe... But, year 3 was really weird with the lock out - How much time was anyone going to have to come in here and compete?

I think a lot of moves this offseason backfired and the Jets were forced a bit into them including the Holmes deal. Given time and a normal FA season things might have been different.

With a normal offseason last year sure it would have been nice to take flyer on some QB - not even sure who.... and then watch them thru training camp.
I'm looking at the list now - Who was the magical guy to push MS... Leftwhich? Carr? Culpepper? The signing period was also quick - who was really available and at what price?

This offseason If Sparano is for it I'd like to see Henne... A guy who knows Sparano's system and a guy with a big arm.. Now THAT could be some heat.

Last offseason was just whacky though.
