The O kept putting GB's D in bad situations. The D wasn't very good but the O was much worse. W/ us we are D first and the D is expected to be the best unit on the field and carry us a bit, for GB it is their O. Much like w/ our D disappointing us throughout the year the GB O disappointed Sunday
Favre decision wasnt wrong. We were 8-3, coming off beating the Patriots and undefeated Titans. He got injured, had we made the playoffs healthy I believe we coulda gone deep. It didnt workout that way though, and it might have been for the better.
8-3 turned into 9-7 mising the playoffs in a year Tom Brady missed 15 1/2 games and we faced maybe the easiest sched we ever had. Favre got hurt in october, he played his best(and only good stretch) stretch of football in November. We lost b/c he stunk not b/c he was hurt. The only reason that trade worke in the long run was b/c Mangini got fired, we hired Rex and drafted Sanchez.
When we got Favre we gave up on Pennington, who came back to haunt us that year but never won a game after that with all his injuries. To get Peyton Manning we'd have to give up on a 25-year-old #1 pick who has proven we can win big games with him and hasn't reached his potential yet. It's funny to me, when people discuss QBs they talk about "grooming a guy for 2-3 years" like that's part of the plan, it's been done in this thread. Yet when you put that into practice for real everyone loses sight of the big picture and wants to get rid of the guy the minute he isn't winning playoff games. Young QBs play more now than they did in the past, but still when you look at Sanchez you have to realize that his entire learning process is playing out under tremendous scrutiny with very high stakes. I don't see the wisdom of scrapping that three years in and going with a quick-fix, only to be back in no-man's land at best within a year or two.
what is funny is Giant fans wanted to run Eli out of town before and after the SB and as well as he is playing now if Victor Cruz doesn't take a 6 yd pass for 99 yds there's a great chance the Jets make the playoffs and the Giants miss again and all the heat would be on them. People overreact way too much, Sanchez is going to be just fine.
Just shows you, even if we do win one the same cast of characters will be on here trashing Sanchez the next time we don't win. Not coincidentally the same crowd that was always trashing Pennington, the same people.
Its not really people so much as the New York market because if Sanchez played like Alex Smith did his first even 2 years he'd be gone before he got his chance to show what he can do like he did this year. We have a habit of overreacting as fans in the New York market which I find funny because honestly we haven't won a ton of championships so you'd think we'd be patient. I'm not a Sanchez "fan" but I do realize he always has a lot of pressure on him and didn't start very many college games at all and was thrown right into the starting lineup. Not very many QB's have started since the day they were drafted until very recently(Andy Dalton,Cam Newton) and they didn't have anywhere near the success that Sanchez had in regards to playoffs. I'm at the point where I do need to see more from Sanchez this season though because he now has pretty much no excuse as he has a lot of experience now in high pressure moments and has dealt with this media for 3 seasons now so I need to see more this season.
Here's a funny, albeit related, story. On Business Insider, they have a story up about how Rob Lowe says Manning is going to retire. http://www.businessinsider.com/peyton-manning-retire-2012-1 Granted, Rob Lowe probably is talking out of his ass, but its out there.
I didn't read the article but I've been thinking that as well, Irsay has come out and said that if Manning is healthy he will be a Colt so I'm thinking if his neck isn't where he wants it to be he rather Retire than to fuck up his own legacy and pull a Brett Favre.
Even if Manning did come here he still has the same crappy Oline and receivers unless that can also be fixed over the offseason but that would probably be asking for a lot to bring in a new #1 QB and also add at least one deep threat receiver and improve the offensive line as well.
That might be the case, and if it is, clearly even I dont want Manning here. But, I dont think Irsay is going to piss off both Manning and Luck by forcing both to be Colts next year. If he is healthy, he is not playing for the Colts next year. That seems pretty obvious. If he is not healthy, his last play in the NFL came against the Jets.
WR is easy to address. If Manning is here, chances are Reggie Wayne will be a Jet as well. And you can always find WR's in the draft or free agency. WR's are literally a dime a dozen in the NFL. And Manning can make anyone look good. As for o-line, people have to stop pretending 3/5 of the line is not great. The left side is still very, very good. Moore is old, but probably still has a year or two in him, and Hunter will not be starting. So, the problems with the o-line are greatly exaggerated.
I agree that all signs are pointing to Manning(even if healthy) not playing for the Colts, they fired the GM/HC just like they did in 1998 before they started over again so it looks like they want to start over with Luck but Irsay loves Manning like a family member and with the new CBA #1 picks don't get paid anything near what they use to. For example Bradford got paid somewhere around a 60m contract when he was drafted and Cam got somewhere around 30m contract wise. So its definitely plausible to think that Manning/Luck can be on that roster at the same time. Theres a lot of ex-players who have came out with the same type of injury that Manning has and have said they had to stop playing so the main questions would be is Manning healthy and if he is how much does he want to be paid. Remember he did want to lower his contract to sign players such as Joseph Addai and others but its not like he exactly took a charity contract he still got paid I believe as much as Brady.
Amusing update: Rob Lowe (!?) is tweeting that he has information that Peyton Manning will retire. As in today.
If we can get manning we do because its a huge upgrade and he instantly brings us a serious chance at a title. However if we don't we still have a young good quarterback that we have to just be a little more patient before we have our serious title contention. Either way its a win win but I want a title sooner than later so ill go with manning.
Rob Lowe (WTF) is tweeting Manning will retire today, Condon says it's news to him. RobLowe Rob Lowe #Colts fans, let's hope my info is wrong. Don't like being wrong, but this time...
