I would love Manning to be a NYJ as hes one of my all time favorite QB's but its so unrealistic on every level to think we can bring him in that this thread is almost laughable.
If healthy, Peyton Manning is going to be a free agent and, as such, he is going to be able to select which team he wants to go to. He's not going to select the Jets.
I'm a Sanchez guy but my argument against Manning has absolutely nothing to do with Sanchez. I mean, if I could create a perfect situation where I simply swap one for the other, even withthe neck concerns, I'd do it in a heartbeat. But the fact of the matter is it can't be done while still filling the holes on the team.
It's a message board dedicated to the New York Jets for their fans my brother - what do you want to talk about? The 900,000,000th thread on "Should Sanchez get another chance or should we dump him for 'insert QB name here'"? Or perhaps another thread about the team imploding? Or about Sparano?
This is almost the exact same team that was arguably the best team in the NFL 365 days ago. Not sure how not they aren't close to contending. They really were an 11 win team again this year that lost games they had no business losing. The defense was still very good. The running game, though maligned, was not awful. And the left side of the line was still okay. This team is winning 11 games with me, you, or anyone on here as qb next year. So, I just dont buy this non-sense about the Jets not being very good next year.
The running game was ranked 22nd in the NFL and barely averaged over 4 YPC, not to mention our longest rush of the year was like 35 yards? I'd say it was pretty awful as was a lot of the team.
Ok, so if they lost games they had no business losing, what about the ones they had no business winning? Dallas was a miracle. They got pretty lucky against Buffalo that second game when Johnson dropped a gimme that gives them a 1st down inside the 10 at worst - after marching down the field in a minute and change with no timeouts. So the three wins you give them that they should have had (from 8 to 11) now goes down to 9-7 if all the "shoulds" worked out. But a better team wins those games they should have lost. This was not a very good team this year. I still don't see where you think the defense was good - it was average at best with flashes of greatness - most of the very good moments were courtesy of Darrelle Revis.
Look, I do not work as a lawyer with an NFL team or the NFL, and my understanding of the NFL salary cap is limited to what I have read and from my understanding of contract law. However, based on what I do know, there are a million ways to fit a 12-15 million dollar contract into the salary cap. And a guy like Tanny can do so very, very easily. I think the cap issue is not going to be the problem in getting Tanny here.
If Manning somehow did accept 15m as his annual salary I would assume about 9m of it would be guaranteed so that would still leave us with not much else to work with for re-signing our players and filling our needs at certain positions.
Exactly. We are sitting very well under the cap currently and im sure a few contracts may be restructured just to make room if bringing Manning here becomes more realistic. Theres also a few guys that we can cut as well to get even more under the cap. Garbage players like Wayne Hunter.
Again, this team had problems, and that is why they were 8-8. What I am saying is that this team was much closer to 11-5 than the 5-11 you would think we should have been based on some peoples assesment of the team. And the holes that we have will all be addressed this off-season. So, you are starting with what on paper, with an easy schedule, should be a a team that at worst wins 10 games, even with Mark Sanchez. Not sure how that would not appeal to Peyton.
But you are ignoring that you can break up the payments, defer huge chunks, backload the contract, add incentives, add in roster bonuses, etc.. You can technically create a contract to do almost anything and still say it will be worth over 80 million over 4 years. Good lawyers, which I am sure the Jets have, and a good cap guy like Tanny can get this done. And they can get this done while leaving cap space for Reggie Wayne, our draft class, and maybe even another player or two.
The stats speak for themselves. The defense wasnt as good as the last 2 years but was definitely ranked in the top 10 in almost any category. There are 20 other teams who probably wished they had our defense. Youre letting a few bad games cloud your memory.
Well, again - they won't be able to fill the holes if they have to pay both Manning and Sanchez. I am not AGAINST getting Manning if you can somehow find a way to make a nice even swap (like in fantasy football), but the point is that they have a ton of holes that are significant - and if they pay Manning (even with restructuring contracts) they can't fill those holes. And then Manning's career is over when they can't protect him. Add to this the fact that we have no idea whether the guy can still be healthy - three neck surgeries for a guy who gets hit a lot is not a good thing. Finally, restructuring all the contracts this year means bad, bad news down the road as these players usually get guaranteed money in order to restructure. In order for a move like that to pay off, we'd have to win a Super Bowl in the next couple of years - and I just don't see that being possible if we do what we have to do to get Manning in here.
You're ignoring the fact that Peyton Manning hates Rex Ryan and wouldn't come to the Jets if they were the last team on Earth.
You keep talking about this magical 12-15mil number as if it's static. You mean 12-15mil per year, right? So if the Jets stagger the numbers over a 4 year contract, and they give themselves a break and only give him 8-9mil for 1012, that means that there is 3-9mil to distribute over the next few years, and with a QB in his condition and age, those later years will be less productive as they go on if the law of averages has anything to do with it. So then you have to figure out a way not to kill your cap figure in 2013, 2014, 2015 when you're paying the guy 15-20 mil per year because of the break you gave yourself in 2012. Then you figure out what other holes you have when players age themselves out of production, and you're still wondering if Manning is going to up-and-retire and accelerate all of that money into his retirement season and cripple you even more. All for a 36 year old QB with 1 ring, gaudy regular season stats, a bunch of playoff chokes and a broken neck. You think that's worth the gamble in the state this team is in? Oh, right, you thought the Jets were the best team in the league in 2010, and also that the 2011 Jets were the same team that was fielded in 2010. So my words are pretty much lost on you.
Your forgetting that our cap genius Tanny is the reason why our cap space is going to be abysmal this season because of backloading contracts. Not to mention you want to backload a contract for a guy who is 36 years old already so you want to pay him the most when hes 38+? REALLY? By the way did you know that Peyton is 9-10 in the playoffs?
Um, no - no clouding here. I sat and watched every single one of those games in person this year, and as a season ticket holder I have not missed a home game in several years - I see what my eyes tell me. I don't care what the statistics say. I didn't see a good defense this year. Fun fact: the Jets were ranked pretty high in 3rd down conversion allowance. But anyone who watched this team knows that when it mattered, or on 3rd and long especially in a big spot, the defense was terrible. So if you stop a team on 3rd down 80% of the time, but most of the 20% was in bad spots, the statistics won't tell you that. ANd that's what this defense was. I'm not saying they are 4-5 players away from having a good defense again, but it was average at best in REALITY this season.
