After watching the playoffs it is obvious what wins...Not teams that air it out 1000x all year. Defense wins!!! Pass rush wins with good qb play!! Giants have medicore secondary compared to the jets and even worse lbs, but they pressure the qb.

SO for 2012 it HAS TO BE. Upshaw or Mercillus from Illinois. I couldnt tell you who is better because I am not a scout. The only other person I would take in front of them is the Martin guy the OT from stanford. That kid is a stud. Any of those 3 would make me happy in the first round. And possibly Trent Richardson but I think we can sign michael bush/tolbert etc. and give mcknight more carriers with greene we can be fine.

Round 2-Would love if someone like Andre Branch fell to us. But depending on who we pick in rd 1. I would look at Brandon Washington the OT from the U. Nick Toon WR Wisc. Brandon Jenkins the OLB from FSU. Vinny Curry DE Marshall.

How could you not like a guy whose name sounds like Merciless?

Since safety Bacarri Rambo is not declaring this draft, I believe the jets should try and draft ILB in the 2nd round, if by chance Burfict and Hightower where available, despite the slim chance, who would you choose?

I can't see either player being there by the time we are on the clock in RD2.

With that being said... I like Dont'a Hightower out of the two.

One, he is more stable from a mental aspect. Burfict is not a very smart player, he is WAY to emotional for my liking. I thought he took a lot of plays off last year as a Junior. I think he has a lot of heart, just no brains.

Hightower is a very smart football player. He was the signal caller for the Bama defense, which is a fairly complex scheme for the college level. He is athletic and I think he showed he was a good blitzer. I loved his play in the bowl game against LSU.

    I'm a fan of Hightower. :)

My feelings are very similar, I'm very up on Hightower right now. I do however love the hate and aggressiveness Burfict plays with.

Does anyone who has exceptional knowledge of the draft have any projections for places that the following prospects could go barring either a really good or a really bad combine. For instance say a receiver like Justin Blackmon runs a 4.6 40, he might drop from like top 5 pick to top 15, like what would you say the range for these players could be.

    Whitney Mercilus
    Courtney Upshaw
    Kendall Wright
    Trent Richardson
    Justin Blackmon
    Jonathan Martin
    Riley Reiff
    Michael Floyd
    Alshon Jeffery

This may be very confusing, but I am just looking at like how high some guy could rise to or how far he could drop to following the combine

    I was thinking like:

Whitney Mercilus: Good combine: Top 10 pick, Bad Combine: Early 2nd Round
Courtney Upshaw: Good Combine: Top 5-10 pick, Bad Combine: Top 25 pick
Kendall Wright: Good Combine: Top 20 Pick, Bad Combine: Early second rounder
Trent Richardson: Good Combine: Top 5 pick, Bad combine: Top 15 pick
Justin Blackmon: Good Combine Top 3 pick, Bad Combine: Top 10 pick
Jonathan Martin: Good Combine: Top 10 Pick, Bad Combine: Top 20 pick
Riley Reiff: Good Combine: Top 5 Pick, Bad Combine: Top 15 pick
Michael Floyd: Good Combine: Top 15 Pick, Bad Combine: Late 1st
Alshon Jeffery: Good Combine: Top 10 Pick, Bad Combine: Top 20 Pick

I have this fear in the back of my mind that Upshaw might be another Brian Thomas.

I can see Upshaw going to Buffalo at #10, but I'm really starting to sell myself on Mike Barron. We've gotten away with borderline horrendous talent out of the safety position for the last two years. And covering Gronk and Hernandez will be an issue for years to come. Might be time to bite the bullet and go SS in the first round.

Anyone see that Mel Kiper Jr. has us taking Mark Barron at #16, I wanna see what this kid can do at the combine and senior bowl, but I would be much more comfortable taking a Riley Rieff, Johnathan Martin, Trent Richardson, Whitney Mercilus, Courtney Upshaw, Michael Floyd, and Alshon Jeffery over him haha, so he is not my first choice or even fith if all are available

I'm not a big Mel Kiper fan.

Regardless, all these experts are completely ignoring BPA and picking based off need of team. The thing that gets me, the Jets rarely ever pick based off of need in the first. They almost always go BPA. You would think these experts would be catching on to that by now.

Yeah, I am not a big fan of that pick, but it's better than some picks out there, like some guy on nfl.com the UNC reciever going like #7

Dwight Jones? I could see him going in the first easily actually, not in the top 10 though. I didn't see that, interesting.

If not he'll be another Calvin Pace... I expect him to post a low 40 time at the combine.

Im sorry, Calvin Pace is a solid OLB, but we need a 10+ sack consistent pressure guy.

Would love to have burfict at ilb, but not at 16, would like to see the jets move up in the second or late first and grab him

Could someone point me to or give me a quick pros and cons of upshaw vs mercilus.

A couple weeks ago it felt the draft forum was leaning towards upshaw but more and more people seem to be behind mercilus now. Did any new news comes up, or is it just analyzing what we need and mercilus fits better?

I know that I may be leaning more towards Mercilus now than two weeks ago simply because I see guys like JPP, Aldon Smith, Justin Tuck and Terrelle Suggs bringing pressure week after week, play after play. I just want a passrusher so desperately because this defense absolutely needs one.

Mercilus fits the bill of that demon passrusher than Upshaw does. He has great size, burst, use of hands, passrush moves and power. He has more potential to be a great passrusher IMO than Upshaw does. Mercilus needs to get better at defending the run and more experience dropping back.

Upshaw on the other hand is a great run defender, he can drop back occasionally and he can rush the passer well. He doesnt have that same upside when it comes to passrushing though, thats the whole debate.

To me, it comes down to a guy with massive potential as a passrusher or a very safe, solid prospect that can do all things well.

Okay, so Mercilus has the potential, but lets say he doesn't live up to it.. Would he still be a solid pick? Is it just that right now Upshaw is better but Mercilus has more upside? I agree, having a pass rusher that can consistently put pressure could solve many defensive problems for us.
