But are you really getting an upgrade to the backup situation in rounds 5-7?

The names I keep seeing are Weeden and Keenum. IMO, both of these guys are not starters in the NFL. They both played in gimmicky systems that inflated their numbers. Remember Kliff Kingsbury? Or more recently Timmy Chang?

I guess it boils down to how the FO feels about Sanchez. But if they really don't have confidence in him, then the answer is not going to be found the draft this year.

Any QB drafted this year will obviously have no impact this year. There is very little chance that a rookie QB would take Sanchez's job away even if he plays at the same level next season.

Wouldn't it be better to bring in an inexpensive veteran (that's not 50 yrs old) as an insurance policy? Then Sanchez gets one last year as THE GUY to prove whether or not he is the Jets QB of the future.

Who knows, the Jets may suck so bad next season that they would have a premium pick to spend on a QB in 2013!

To me, if we're going to draft one of the system QBs to see how they work out in 2-3 years, we may as well take a flier on Kellen Moore or Case Keenum in the 3rd of 4th round under the rubric of Best Player Available, instead of a kid who's going to be 30+ by the time he ever sees the field

I want nothing to do with Moore. IMO he doesn't have an NFL arm.

But I'm not looking for a legit backup QB. What I'm saying is that if Sanchez goes down, our season's probably lost anyway. That's usually what happens when your QB goes down. By having an okay backup, all your doing is saving face. Probably missing the playoffs anyway.

If you're not a fan of Weeden or Keenum, that's fine. I just think I'd rather have an unknown in there (and for the record, I'm a huge Weeden fan...maybe he is a product of the system or having Blackmon there). If I know that the guy behind Sanchez has already more or less peaked as a backup QB, then what's the point? We couldn't get to the playoffs WITH Sanchez this year, so without him, I'd rather have an unknown commodity than a known backup.

You only sign a guy for a few years anyway, and it's a late pick, so it's not like it costs a lot in guaranteed money or anything. If not for his age, there's no question he has the highest upside of the three (at least in my opinion). And there's nothing wrong with being on the wrong side of 30 as a QB. He's not a RB. Sure it'll limit his # of years in the league, but there's nothing that says Keenum or Moore will be in the league in 2 years either.

I'm not doubting that, but there's very little chance that he loses his job to a career backup then too. As I said, I'll take the unknown over the known in this situation. And it gives the unknown a little time to develop under Sanchez anyway.

And honestly, I'd like to think that a rookie that's been starting his whole career in college would be fighting a lot harder in camp and practice than a vet that signs with the Jets knowing he's the backup and nothing more. At the very least, that should push Sanchez a bit more knowing that he has someone that's going out there trying to beat him for his spot. I'm convinced that a lot of backup QBs that sign with teams AS backup QBs are pretty okay with holding the clipboard.

A 6'-8" late rounder? Don't know much else, but I'm intrigued.

I've been heavily interested in Osweiler since the preseason, I pegged him as my Breakout POTY a while back on here.

He lacks experience(only a season plus a few replacement games), but he's got every tool you could ever want from a QB. His basketball background translates well in terms of his mobility for a 6-8, 240 pound QB. He had a few dazzling runs in the 1st few games, he will not be mistaken for Ryan Mallett outside the pocket.

He could end up being on of the top 5 QBs selected come draft day...
