I liked what a saw fom Jenkins in 2010, this year he's been quiet, hot and cold. I just don't see enough consistent play this year from Jenkins to warrant a 1st rd pick. I'll pass on Jenkins. The only 2 DE/OLBs I want in rd 1 would be Upshaw or Mercilus. People don't give Mercilus enough credit, he's fought double-teams most of the year and plays on a weaker defense, compared to Upshaw's Bama defense. Mercilus has all the talent to be the next Terrel Suggs.
And he has all the intangibles that make great players. I really liked Jenkins coming into this year, but this team needs more than a speed rusher like Maybin. It needs someone who can constantly push the pocket... Mercilus seems to fit that mold very well. I also like Melvin Ingram as an OLB in Rex's system. I was excited to see what he could do in the bowl game, but from what I saw, he didnt really impress.
I'm kinda torn between Upshaw and Mercilus right now. Upshaw has been an absolute beast this year. Just this year though, a one year wonder. Those type of players scare the shit out of me. There is no denying the kind of year this kid had, and he was doing it against some stout competition. Florida, LSU, etc. Had really good games against them. On the other hand.. You have Mercilus. This kid has a great motor, never stops. I love his energy, I think he looks to be the fastest in football speed terms. I don't care much about the 40. The thing that I am hooked on is the fact that he made Mike Adams look like a wuss for Ohio State. I think Mike Adams is going to be a hell of a RT in this league, but man did he look silly against Mercilus. lol I will figure it out before draft time, but it's a coin flip for me right now. We are sitting in a good spot IMO. We should have a lot of good choices by the time #16 comes around. Those three are nice but there are some other nice players that I think should be there around that time. As of now anyway, we all know how things change leading up to the draft. Fun times.. I'm excited.
Did you mix them up accidentally? Mercilus fits the bill of the first description and the second for Upshaw... I was really looking into this debate today too- Upshaw vs Mercilus Upshaw seems like the better player so far to me. He's a powerful beast that can come in and play every down, and it does seem like he has good passrush potential- he's not gonna kill the tackle with speed, his power and leverage give him the ability to plow through/disengage blockers. This seems like a perfect fit for Rex's system. I would be happy with either one, but at the moment, Upshaw has a small lead.
Perfectly fine with any of the 3 but I have been following M. Floyd since 2008 and I don't have anyone I have been more attached to as a prospect than him so it would be real nice to see him be a Jet and continue to watch him for years and years.
Yeah... I don't know what I did there. I usually proof read after I post something. Ooppss.. Mercilus is in the lead for me. The kid had a crazy year, it does bother me that it came out of nowhere though. I mean, two sacks your prior two years, then all of a sudden he blows up for 16 in one year? Odd. I really like the fact that he was that much more productive then Upshaw on a lesser defense though. I'm sure being a player on that Bama defense made life a little easier. A lot of talent usually always makes you look better then you are. So, I dunno.
Not really odd. The majority of college football players that leave as juniors only have that one monster year. He didn't have a big season as a soph because he wasn't a starter. I'm not going to bash the kid because it took him until age 21 to become a beast.
