This question completely depends on how they go 8-8. If they mortgage the future to bring in more vets and then go 8-8 I think it is pretty clear that Tanny would need to go at that point. If it's not working and it's not orthodox the odds are pretty good it's not good management. If they shake things up and replace a bunch of people about to go anyway and have a down year at 8-8 you could argue that they've actually moved the franchise forward by beginning to unwind all of the talent front-loading that Tanny and Rex have done over the last few seasons. If they put together what looks like a strong team somehow and then it all falls apart again? Well that's on Rex and I would expect him to get fired.
We wouldnt cut Rex. In 2013 we host the Super Bowl, it would be in our best interest to keep Rex and get to the Super Bowl in the Meadowlands.
this is what troubles me, this 8-8 season will only set us up for going back to the playoffs. Not say a 13 or 14 win season and the division title with home field advantage, but possibly just making the playoffs as a road wildcard will have Ryan and Tannenbaum sitting pretty for another year. Gone are the days of AFC title games.. Look at Andy Reid, he had his team in the NFC title game for a couple years, even made it to the SB, now, he's playing at 8-8 again. agreed, good analysis ... It looks like the window has closed..
I don't agree with this but think it is well said and possible. I think Ryan will make the necessary adjustments. Add a couple of pieces to the line, a RB, a pass rusher and a safety to this year's team and we do well even with a below average QB. Next year we need those pieces and what ever we have to replace from this year. Getting to be a stretch but can be done. It would be easier with a better QB but that is not going to happen in 2012.
After having time to think. This team could very likely go 8-8 or worse next year. Lack of talent all over the place (outside corner and center). You could want an upgrade in almost every spot. Coaches too. Its a mess.
Rex has already won three Superbowls with the Jets and two with the Chargers. He's not going anywhere.
We haven't really had any serious injuries in years and this year we could have easily lost more than 8 (Dallas being one, Buffalo another). If we get anybody hurt I can easily see this team losing at least 8 again.
the only way i'll feel like rex should be gone after next season is if we're under .500 and the locker room is still a mess. other than that, keep him around. the locker room thing is really on him though. hopefully he finds a way to get that shit sorted out.
Jets are not going 8-8 next season 'cause Tanny will do the right thing and Bring Braylon back(cheap contract) as well as either Sign another WR( Bowe?) or draft one(Michael Floyd?). He will also find a RT that can Pass-Block through Free Agency as well... I think the Jets can go 11-5 next year. Just my opinion, though...of course.
You bring up some good points. This is going to be an interesting offseason because the media is really attacking this team and they are under intense scrutiny. If Rex doesn't get them to the playoffs next year the media and fans will likely run the guy out of town. This is usually a bad scenario because it often causes guys to do whats best for next year instead of whats best for the team. I hope that isn't the case but if my job is on the line I'm probably bringing in some older vets to save my job rather than doing whats best for the team in the long run.
