Do any of you think Sanchez's play up until this season warrants a second contract or should the organization wait until he completes his first? I think this is a fair question as Mark has just completed year 3 of his rookie contract with less than stellar results. I think it would be prudent for the FO and Ownership to wait until after the 2012 season or even after the 2013 season to make a decision on that depending on Mark's play over the next 2 seasons. All opinions will be welcomed..
That's the Drew Brees question again. The Chargers chose not to extend Brees after his disappointing 2nd season as full time starter. They drafted Rivers instead. Brees injury sealed the deal and they lost one of the best QB's of all time even though he was playing very well before the injury. I think if the Jets get the chance to extend Sanchez now they should take it. His bargaining power will never be lower and they might very well wind up with a cap-friendly contract as QB's go. The irrationality of the fan base and media over the QB at this point is higher than I've ever seen as a Jet's fan. It beats out the Richard Todd hysteria by a landslide, mainly because Todd was playing on a terrible team that was losing a lot of games. Sanchez is playing on an above average team that's winning, if not as much as the fans would like due to Rex's endless hype.
He won't get a second contract with the Jets. And give the defense who gave up 14, 14, 16 and 21 points to playoff teams some credit for those four playoff wins.
he will get a 2nd contract and the D deserves credit but so does the QB, the best D's this league has ever seen still needed quality QB play to win in January and our D's were only good not great.
I think it's silly. This same nonsense was happening in this same city not 5 years ago with Eli. People wanted to run him out of town the year he won the Super Bowl because he was inaccurate, made poor decisions, had bad body language, yadda, yadda, yadda...Same story with Sanchez.
I haven't seen enough one way or the other at this point to make a decision. What I would do is make him "show me" over the last 2 years of his deal. I'm not gambling now on a long term deal that may be relatively cap friendly and getting myself locked into a deal with a QB I decide I need to replace in 2 years. If he proves himself over the next two years I'm happy to pay a franchise QB franchise QB money.
if Rivers was our QB he would have been run out of town years ago. He's a #s guy that plays small in big games unlike Mark who usually plays big in big games. In just 2 short years sanchez already has more playoff wins than Rivers and Rivers has had the more talented teams.
This seems to be a common confusion here. He played big in big games? Less than 200 yards per game is NOT playing big. The playoff win thing is the biggest joke I've seen in quite awhile. Jeff Hostetler, Trent Dilfer, and Brad Johnson all won SB's. Common theme? Dominant defenses. If you think Sanchez is the reason for the Jets success, you're dillusional.
What is your definition of "big games"? Jets were sitting pretty at 8-5 and could have walked into the playoffs with good QB play against the Eagles, Giants and Phins. Those were "big games" and Sanchez came up really small. BTW, in 4 playoff wins Sanchez averaged less than 200 yards passing. The Jets won those games becuse of the defense, not because of Sanchez.
who cares what the yardage is? it's about making plays to win and limiting mistakes which he did. He badly outplayed the best QB of this generation in the div rd last year. Hostetler, Dilfer and Johnson all took multiple teams to the playoffs and their teams got worse after they left. Putting up great fantasy #s doesn't mean a QB is great and you don't need great fantasy #s to WIN. True, these were big games but they still weren't playoff games where it matters most. We had a ton of problems on this team, QB was down on the list. The Jets won those playoff games b/c of the D and the QB making plays and limiting mistakes. Brady had 299 yds in the div rd yet Sanchez was MUCH better than him despite Brady passing for many more yards. You dom't win 4 road games in 2 years w/ average to below average QB play especially w/o a great D which we did not have. We have a very good D.
Not going to start a new thread on this. Did he ever have the throwing shoulder surgery after last season? I read a report yesterday that it could still be a problem. This could be considered hijacking. Stay on topic and please don't do this again.
I am so unsure at this point i couldn't even vote. He may be an Eli type that takes the extra year to "get it" or he may not develop any further no matter how much work he puts in. If we resign him now, we should not do what the giants did with Eli and give him a mega deal at this point based on the belief that he will come around. That leap of faith paid off for the Giants but probably won't for US. We need more cap flexibility at this point to get better in other areas so I do not think it is a good idea to commit more money to Mark.
How could that be hijacking? His health is in question all the time. Neck and shoulder. It could be a viable reason why he has no deep ball and struggles with accuracy. Reasons why one could chose not to give him a second contract.
Yeah Brady's playoff run in 01 consisted of 190.7 yds per game with one td and one pick, yet he his credited for the super bowl win and title. It's funny how nobody argues if Brady played better before the last drive they wouldn't have needed a comeback. (thats an argument for Sanchez and how is last minute drives should be discredited.) Eli gets credit for 07 even though if he played better earlier they wouldn't of needed a comeback drive or a miracle catch. If QB's play average to above average and dont negatively impact their team, they're going to be credited for wins. Also, in both examples above, the two defenses stopped what is regarded as some of the top offenses the nfl has ever seen, but that is always overlooked also. It is a TEAM sport so you cannot completely credit or discredit a player. Sanchez was a factor in why we won those games. I voted for no, we need to wait to see if he improves. I would not give an extension based on the first 3 years, but I'm not giving up in him.
i'd give him one more year.if his comp.% isn't around 60 with a 2.5/1 td/int ratio i think it will be time to cut bait.you can't let him finish out the contract because if he plays well that last year he would have major leverage for eli money.
Keep in mind that the playoff games and Super Bowl were Brady's 14th, 15th and 16th starts as an NFL starting QB. He single-handily put the Pats in position to win during the final drive against the Rams. You also make a very good point regarding if QB's play average/above average they should get credit for the win. However, the opposite applies as well. If QB's play below average/poor the chance of winning important regular season games or playoffs games is slim to none.
I still think Sanchez is going to be a very good QB for us and if we're going to win a Super Bowl any time soon he'll be the guy. I'm starting to worry about David Carr syndrome though. Another year with Schotty, a bad line and new WR's and we might never see the best out of Sanchez.
