Two decisions need to be made. The first is a football decision, and Bart clearly has football value in some capacity even though his skills are declining. The second is a business decision, and depends upon his contract and the salary cap implications of cutting/keeping him. They overlap, and it's complicated so I'm going to let Rex and Tanny make those decisions. The only other option is that he may want to retire, but the team has no control over that.
I think Tanny was scouting Linebackers in last year's draft when Rex saw 'The Terminator' wax someone and Rex wanted him instead of a LB. Maybe this year Tanny locks Rex out of the war room!
i think they have to bring him back but he makes way too few impact plays for the money he makes. Ray Lewis was thought to be too old but he is a way more impactful player than Scott.
Doesn't he HAVE to be back? Isn't his salary guaranteed? Even so, I thought he had a pretty good year, despite being a 2 down backer. I think FootballOutsiders rated him as 14th overall among linebackers. Trying to find the link, can't remember if it was 14th among ILB, or LB in general.
Jets can’t wait to cut Bart Scott http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/category/rumor-mill/ Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 1, 2012, 10:15 PM EST The Jets’ thorough collapse to close this regular season is going to cost plenty of people jobs. Starting with inside linebacker Bart Scott. Rod Boone of Newsday reports that the Jets will not bring Scott back for another season. While it’s a little odd for the news to come out now, the decision is no surprise. Scott is due $5.6 million in 2012 and his play has steadily fallen off the last two years. He was a part-time player this year, and was not terribly effective. We assume Scott will get another job in the league. If not, a fun media career awaits. You can guess how we feel about that.
According to his contract it makes no sense to cut him (7.2 million in dead money), but the report could be correct if the Jets plan to trade him. Even if they find a team willing to pay him the bulk of his base salary and the Jets pony up the difference, they may be able to get rid of him with a much smaller cap hit.
i like bart and even though he isnt the player he was, he is still pretty effective. He blows a lot of plays up. I say bring him in for another year and draft a replacement.
He took a paycut this year to ensure a guaranteed salary for 2012 season, so in essence cutting him hurts us more (someone with more knowledge of the cap system can correct me if I'm wrong on this).
I mean didn't I mention this before the season and got blasted? Then all that BS about how he does other things not in the stats? What a joke.
so long Bart. I just hope they have a solid replacement in mind. if Harris gets hurt next year, we're fucked
Bart will be missed if he's a salary dump . No question his skills are rolling downhill , but he has been one of my favorite Jets . His quotes and passion for the game are great . Maybe he will be back if no other team is interested . The market for a aging linebacker sometimes dries up pretty fast . I just hope he doesn't join the pats , please Bart don't join the fucking pats.
Jet fans spouting off without knowing all the information? Noooo.... Never. Here's a good article that details some things people are wildly overlooking. All it took to find was going to the website that lists all of our cap info. http://nyjetscap.com/2011_Post/bartscottcut.php
