They try to let the play play out, because if they call it not a fumble and it is, they cant give possesion to the D even if they recover because the play was dead. This happened with Pitt and MIA where Big Ben dove for the end zone, fumbled, MIA recovered but they called it a TD on the field. The TD was overturned but the ball couldnt be given to MIA.
