I don't know what to say besides, NO. That's wrong. You're wrong. Wildly wrong. Have you seen Ingram? The kid is a fantastic athlete for someone his size. By saying that he's a 4.9 guy, you're telling everyone that he has the same straight line speed as Marcel Dareus and Muh Wilkerson. Do you actually think that's correct?
I'd be lying if I said I watched a lot of him, I only caught like 2 games from them I'm guilty of looking at nfldraftscouts I'll take a closer look right now and edit this out. Edit- I must say I'm pretty impressed watching this kid he has great pass rushing instincts and plays the run very well. The only knock is that if hes playing in this system he'll be standing up a lot more and can he make that transition.
I knew that was what you probably did to get those numbers, but even with that remember they give a high/low 40 time for a reason. Neither is really anything but an educated guess, but always factor in both. As for the whole DE to stand up thing, 90% of the guys that are converted to 34 OLB never had their hand up for more than certain special situations. I'd actually say that with his past Ingram's probably done the most work at LB of any 34 prospect the Jets will be looking at besides Upshaw.
I remember I watched a SC game to see ow good Alshon Jeffery was, and this beast was the only thing I remembered coming out of the game. He is deceptively fast and agile for someone his size. He is amazingly strong, and plays the run equally as good as the pass. He was described as the most athletic guy on the defense. Combine that with the strength of a DT, and you get one hell of a football player. He also has great hand-eye coordination and has good hands and can cover decently well in zone. Honestly, after watching more of this guy, I dont know how he is talked about more being that he is more talented than many of the other OLB prospects. Also, I think he would fill BT's role extremely well because he can shed blocks and sure up that run game, while also adding another dimension that BT never had- rushing the passer.
Also, Matt Reynolds just had a man play. Lost his helmet while blocking, DE disengaged to chase the ball carrier, QB reverses field bringing defenders with him, Reynolds peels back w/o helmet and lays out the guy that knocked the helmet off, QB throws TD pass.
I watched every SC game and I am still not sure if Ingram can be a 3-4 OLB. He is an amazing athlete and very good pass rusher. But I just find it weird that someone who occasionally played DT for the Gamecocks can be an OLB in the 3-4. Granted if anyone can, he can. He did also drop into coverage and did not look lost. It would be nice to have him, but I have a a bunch of prospects ranked before him for the Jets. I also think he will do better in the 4-3 and just hope the Patriots do not grab him.
You turned me into a big fan, that fake punt was just amazing when it comes to his athleticism. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P81MO9dnE70 Looking now I think we should trade up for him since he's reminding me of Terrell Suggs more then Hali when it comes to combined Strength/Speed he would definitely thrive in this 3-4 scheme.
Factor in the size that Rex usually looks for in his OLBs and it makes for a great fit. I'm a big fan, but there are a lot of OLBs at the top of the class that would probably fit Rex's mold. I'm interested to see how these guys start grading out, because the best for for the Jets may be a guy that isn't the best fit for everyone else (ie a lower value overall).
I got a sleeper for ya. Aston Whiteside, DE/OLB from Abilene Christian University. Hes most likely going to go 6th round at the highest BUT this kid has some great potential to make an impact on special teams, defense, and the locker room. He's got NFL blood lines as the Cousin of Bernard Scott and Cylde Gates. A father. And the LCS player of the year. He has racked up 130 tackles (68 solo), 57.5 tackles for loss, 31.5 sacks, 36 QB hurries, 1 INT, 7 forced fumbles (4 recovered), and my favorite number 6 blocked kicks in his 4 year career, 5 in the last 2 years. Yeah I know special teams stuff isnt so spectacular but man would Westhoff love this kid, and beside his ST allure, he can also rush the passer and stop the run, at 6'2 260 with a 4.7 speed hes got the size and speed to be a great 3rd down rusher. Im not saying he is going to come in and solve our pass rush problems but what I can say is he will come in and make an impact on special teams and could eventually help alot at depth at OLB. Just someone to keep an eye on
Not really a sleeper, but what are your guys' thoughts on Cordarro Law out of Southern Miss? He was pretty dominant in the Hawaii Bowl and could be an excellent mid round pick if we focus on offense early or decide to draft 2 OLBs.
Ingram was a linebacker in HS...he only switched either his freshman year or sophomore year (idk). If he can cut a little weight, he'd probably be the DE most apt playing standing up in this draft.
This kids not a linebacker but he can be converted, hes 6'5 271 and runs a reported 4.62 40, hes the 13th rated DE so far so a bit of a sleeper pick if we can get him in the 3rd round. Jake Bequette http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRgSXwSpdI8
Didn't ask me, but my two cents. Mike Adams was suspended for the first five games of 2011 for his role in selling OSU memorabilia for cash and discounts on tattoos. He is a LT and might not convert to RT well. I want a guy who has a couple of years playing RT and who played well against good defenses at good college program. Plus drafting a LT candidate would require using a higher pick. Draft a true RT in the second round and we would be better off and leave the 1st round pick for a splash player at DE/OLB.
Well, your quoting a post of mine from a good long while ago, but I'll respond anyway. Adams projects very well to RT. He has the strength and size to drive block and is a good pass blocker. Going from left to right is not unheard of. Brian Bulaga played LT in NCAA ball and was drafted as a RT for the Packers jsut a couple of yers back in round one. This post of mine was from when we stongly looked to be picking in the 20's. I want no part of Adams in the mid teens as there will be many players of higher caliber around. Regaining our dominance as a run first team is a must as the team stands currently. Drafting a guy like DeCastro would be a huge boots towards that and I'm all for it. A good 34 edge rusher or WR is also a possibility in the first for us but I would love to continue to build from the Oline out.
The issue with that way of thinking is that I would say the great majority of the time, OT prospects good enough to be considered in the first 3 or 4 rounds are playing LT at the collegiate level. They might not have the athleticism to play there in the NFL, but they're probably the best tackle that team has. The only time you'll see a guy playing RT is if they have a another good prospect playing on the other side, like FSU Zebrie Sanders (and people think he might actually be able to jump to LT). In the pros they'll be facing (obviously) NFL caliber DEs/passrushers every game. Even if they're not the studs that the LT will face, defenses will abuse a RT that can't pass block. College LTs will see a much higher quality of passrusher, so it's easier to project what skills he'll have in the NFL.
I like him because hes an every down OLB, good against the run and a big strong pass rusher off the edge for us on passing downs as well. He has great gap discipline, good hands, and doesn't miss very many tackles. What I don't like(and I'm not sure if he was just tired) but he doesn't like to pursue or gets lazy when he has to pursue from behind. It would be a smooth transition though since he's played standup LB in Nick Sabans system. Another positive is that he comes from a pretty complex system in bama so he can pick up Rex's system with a good offseason. All in all hes a pretty solid prospect with a lot of upside, doesn't have blazing speed but does a lot of things really well, kinda like a Terrell Suggs type of player IMO.
