Good to see I'm not the only one watching a movie I saw begin back in 04. And one fact that's missing in that great OP is that the OC, Jon Hufnagel, was with Manning for his first 3 seasons and didn't scheme to the strengths of the offensive personnel, so he was fired. Same movie
This situation transcends the whole "New York Media" issue. I think a big part of this situation is in the Jets organization's complete lack of success. See, the Giants could show some patience with Eli when he was younger since they've actually won Superbowls within the last 40 years. It's hard to Jet fans to be as patient when all we get is "almost", or in most cases, "not even close". The fact is, it is frustrating when we got so close the last 2 years but again failed. We know that if Sanchez gets another shot after Schitty is fired, and he isn't the guy, it sets us back (AGAIN), several years at best. I think we're just tired of excuses.
Before the season began did you think the Jets were going to be 2 games better than Carolina through 16 weeks? Did you think they would be trailing the Bengals in the wild card hunt?
It has everything to do with the high exposure the Jets get by having Rex as a coach, being in the NY media, and making the playoffs the past two season, while having the expectations that Sanchez was going to be a 62% passer with 30 passing TDs and 10INTs in his 3rd season with a worse line and less offensive talent. Its frustration, its expectations, and its exposure. It has nothing to do with the past. Only SOJFs care about how the past is linked to upcoming seasons. Those fans are stupid and rampant.
But he completes less than 60% of the passes. Sanchez sucks. He is a bust. He is the entire reason why this offense is faltering.
Quarterbacks that have played under Brian Schottenheimer: Drew Brees, young QB/veteran: During (2002-2005): 84.7 Rating, 79 TDs, 53 INTs, 62.3%, 6.8 YPA, team 33-31, one playoff spot After (2006-Present): 98.0 Rating, 196 TDs, 92 INTs, 67.7%, 7.7 YPA, team 61-34, Super Bowl title Chad Pennington, veteran: During (2006-2007): 83.8 Rating, 27 TDs, 25 INTs, 66.0%, 6.9 YPA, team 14-18, one playoff spot After (2008): 97.4 Rating, 19 TDs, 7 INTs, 67.4%, 7.7 YPA, team 11-5, division title Brett Favre, veteran: During (2008): 81.0 Rating, 22 TDs, 22 INTs, 65.7%, 6.7 YPA, team 9-7, no playoffs After (2009): 107.2 Rating, 33 TDs, 7 INTs, 68.4%, 7.9 YPA, team 12-4, one game from the Super Bowl Mark Sanchez: During (2009-2011): 73.4 Rating, 53 TDs, 48 INTs, 55.1%, 6.5 YPA, team 28-19, at least two playoff spots After: ????? See the trend? Sanchez as a young QB needs the right system that can maximize his talents. Brian Schottenheimer has not done this, nor has he with three other QBs, two future hall of famers. It's time for a change.
I posted this elsewhere in response to this article and I think we as Jets fans really have given Sanchez an undeserved bad rap. We discount Eli's 43 games and 1300+ attempts in his 4 year college career before even stepping into an NFL game but not give Mark the benefit of the doubt with only 16 college starts and leaving early as a junior. We count Sanchez's fumbles but negate his rushing TDs. We won't discuss Eli's stupid INTs but we will include Sanchez's dropped interception total. We don't break down film and analyze Eli's penchant for throwing desperate heaves off his back foot when under pressure but we will disparage Sanchez when he takes a sack under pressure after his OL folds. When is this going to finally stop? Mark certainly has areas of improvement that he must fix in order to make the jump to the next level - like every other NFL QB in the league. Despite the team as a whole regressing - look at the OL, rushing offense, defense and special teams and production is down - Mark has still managed to improve his numbers despite being anchored down by Schotty play calling. I am not a Sanchez apologist but sometimes you guys go overboard with the Sanchez hate. I remember watching Eli up until the last four games & playoffs in the 2007 Super Bowl season - he was an absolutely maddening train wreck. There were games where he was absolutely horrible and where he played great, an inconsistency shared by Sanchez. Is Sanchez improving as fast as we would like? No he isn't but when you haven't won a SB in 40 years anything less than instant gratification is dissappointing. That being said, unlike in the past few years where Sanchez has been holding the team back, I think the team is really hurting Sanchez: Playcalling has been crappy with poor timing throughout the season - that is on Schotty. WRs have run lazy routes, given up on plays and dropped easy catches - that is on Holmes, Burress and Keller. OL has done nothing in the run game and pass protection - that is on injuries to Moore, Mangold and Turner + poor play by Hunter. ST have given up a league high 6 turnovers - that is on the ST players and Westoff. Defense can't wait to give up a TD - that is on blowhard Bart Scott who has been exposed this year as a fraud and the inability of safeties to make a tackle or cover. There is a lot wrong with the NYJets this year and it isn't all on the QB.
but every analyst says he has regressed without looking at stats or comparing him to other rookie qb's in their 3rd year so the analysts must be correct! Josh Freeman has regressed this season and Joe Flacco has regressed -- stats prove that. Sanchez has improved stats in every category - yardage, comp %, TD%, and QBR - Hell he nearly has the record for most TDs by a Jets QB...more than Namath, Testaverde, Pennington, Obrien, etc!! Give the kid the same receivers for more than a season.
Saw some big truths there at least 5 interceptions were not sanchez fault from my head i can remember the santonio drop, the santonio tipped pass, the greene drop, and a couple of wrong routes by the receivers Sure, every qb has interceptions that are not his fault However, it's stupid to give up on a QB in his third year, hopefully schotty will be gone and we will finally be able to see if sanchez is our franchise qb or not
Reality is the Giants gave up a ton to get and build their future around Manning. The Jets gave up very little to get Sanchez and put him in a much more limited position to be a piece of the puzzle. The stats may be similiar but the circumstances are completely different as is there ability to stand in and throw the ball down the field.
I disagree on the stand-in and throw down the field argument. The Giants built their offense around a pounding ground attack to bring the safeties up and deep throws to make them pay for that. They still struggled a lot in Eli's first 4+ seasons but they were clearly designing the offense to give Eli shots down the field on a regular basis. The Jet's offense? Who can even say what it is supposed to do other than shots down the field don't fit in Schotty's scheme.
Why do you include the rushing TDs in those numbers, but you don't include the 10 fumbles Sanchez has had? 30Tds, and 25 turnovers doesn't sound as good? People can blame the OC, and rightfully so, but Sanchez is a big part of the problem. Before the Denver game the Jets attempted 29 passes of 21 or more yards. Sanchez was 6 of 29 with 1TD and 3 Ints on those pass attempts of 21 or more yards. I know I wouldn't be calling a bunch of passes down the field with those results.
Here's what I don't get about the Jets offense. They have a tall WR in Plax who can outjump any CB in the leage. With the number of interference calls this year, why not toss a few back-shoulder deep balls to Plax? You will get either a completion, PI or incomplete pass. No CB will out-jump Plax for the pick.
thanks TS for some rational thoughts on Mark Sanchez never seen a QB get so much hate from his own fanbase. Crazy how down ppl are on Mark. I'm here to tell you that Mark is A STUD the kid's on career trajectory to be an elite QB better than Eli ever will be
Great OP! It really does show exactly why everyone's expectations are too high. Everyone expects Mark to be in the top 5 already. I'm honestly tired of Sanchez getting the all the blame for our struggles. He had his best statistical season of his career this year and improved his game in almost every category. I'm willing to stick with Sanchez as long as he keeps that up. Sanchez this year, outperformed Favre in 2008 with the same system, when he had a much better offense line. Our problems are the offensive line and play calling.
