FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Brian Schottenheimer's cell phone has been buzzing a bunch lately. The late-night text messages from friends and family members usually come as the New York Jets' embattled offensive coordinator is still working, trying all he can to come up with a winning game plan. "I'm like, `I'm getting another one. Something must've come out. Something was said,"' Schottenheimer said with a smile Thursday. "You have to laugh at it some. Hey, this is a great business, but I don't get too caught up in it." Good thing, because there certainly is a lot being said about him. Fans have flocked to sports radio shows, Twitter and message boards, demanding that Schottenheimer be fired. There's even a Facebook page -- 280 members strong and counting -- dedicated to the cause. Media members have also floated out the idea that the Jets need to make a change. Schottenheimer is aware of the mounting criticism but isn't concerned about his job security. "You get texts from your friends, `Hey, you doing OK?"' he said. "You don't have time to worry about it. It's out of my control. I'm an excellent football coach. Have we been inconsistent this year? Absolutely. I wish I could put my finger on it and say exactly why that was." The Jets' offense ranks 27th in the NFL, something Schottenheimer says he "absolutely" deserves blame for. Quarterback Mark Sanchez has been inconsistent and not progressed the way many expected, the offensive line has struggled at times and the receivers haven't had many big plays down the field. The Jets even brought in Tom Moore, the former Indianapolis Colts' offensive guru, as a consultant to assist Schottenheimer. It all came to a head last Saturday as the offense couldn't get much of anything done down the stretch in a 29-14 loss to the Giants that seriously jeopardized their playoff hopes. Sanchez threw 59 times in the game, something that had even the players scratching their heads. That performance also fueled growing speculation that Schottenheimer may be done after Sunday if the Jets don't make the postseason. Schottenheimer adds he doesn't think the offense needs a good performance Sunday in the regular-season finale at Miami for him to remain with the team. He received a two-year extension before the season, and Schottenheimer, in his sixth year with the Jets, has been given no indication either way by the team about his future. "I grew up in a household around a coach that took a lot of heat and got fired at 14-2," he said, referring to his father Marty's firing by San Diego following the 2006 season. "You have no control over it, so you just roll with the punches. ... We lost the game, but Santa still came." http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000...c-schottenheimer-not-worried-about-job-status
Haha, Schotty has to make you laugh. Although he really cant let it slip out that he is worried but deep down, you know he knows his time is numbered. Failure to perform can only help you keep your job for so long. Lets hope Miami picks him up!
I don't think he's ever been really "worried" about his job status. Certainly explains his playcalling doesn't it. I guess when your Dad is pals with the owner of the team you work for, there's a certain amount of latitude you'll be given. If he doesn't get canned at the end of this season, then you know there's a real problem in the Jet FO and from what I've read, its all about Tannenbaum being a huge Schotty fan.
Well it's not like hes going to say he sucks and is shaking in his Nikes waiting for the call that he's fired.
Glad to see he is feeling the pressure to not suck on Sunday. "Nah guys it's cool, I got an extension." I really hate this man as our OC, last week's pass-happy disaster should be enough to convince anyone.
Have we been inconsistent this year? Absolutely. I wish I could put my finger on it and say exactly why that was." really? let me help. take finger and place it on forehead. finger is now firmly on it
Wow Either he knows what his future is - either way- and he's playing it cool, or he's whistling past the graveyard How can you say, even in coach speak, that you don't know what the problem is?
Whats even more stupid about that quote is that he hasnt figured it out. HES THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR THATS HIS JOB!!!!
He's probably got his salary guaranteed for the next two years. If my boss told me im fired and I had my salary guaranteed for the next two years I probably wouldn't give a shit either.
After Rex's presser today, I am almost convinced that some dumbass team has him lined up as their next HC.
^^^^^^^^^ This. Exactly what I was thinking. Or, he's like, "I think my job is safe. Why the hell else would they extend me for two more fucking years if I wasn't golden?"
How about nothing? How about, "I'm focusing on the Miami game"? How about anything except I can't put my finger on why the offense hasn't been consistent this year?
Shotty is gone, he pretty much cemented his faith with that 64 pass nightmare before christmas and the only reason it hasn't been done yet is because we still have a shot at the playoffs but there's no way he stays for 2012 season unless this organization is just fucking nuts.
Shotty, like Rex, protects his players. The problem with the Jet's is not the coach, it's the fact that there are no playmakers on the offense. No receiver with speed, no rb with speed, inconsistent qb play. I'll admit I think he's a good coach. Just remember the old saying. "You can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit".
