urlacher played safety in college but lb in the pros. given his speed and lack of weight, do you think maybin could play ss as a pro, to match up with te like gronkowski? agrred that two ol, two outside lb, a wr, a te and safeties should be draft priorities. and, instead of tanny trading away multiple picks, why not stockpile picks and/or trade down? seems to work for pats. and, the steelers let guys walk who demand too much money for a position. so, did the jets make a $13 million a year mistake on santonio and plax?
I don't see Maybin playing safety at all, he really can't cover well and I definitely don't want to see him trying to tackle Gronkowski. I think we really dropped the ball on Plaxico big time, the guy is 34 Yrs old and just served a 2 year prison sentence and was clearly not in football shape. Holmes is a serious playmaker though so I thought signing him was a great idea just not so much putting a C on his chest. I think Cromartie could play FS if he would stop being a pussy and actually tackle because his length/speed/ballhawking skills is great for the position but he just hates to get his pedicure fucked up.
One of my first thoughts about Maybin when we signed him was that he was such a tweener that they could try him in the SS role for 46 sets, and unless my eyes were deceiving me, they did it on a few plays against Buffalo and Philly, to mixed results. He really can't do worse that Smith, in my humble opinion.
i thought that myself earlier this year, except i haven't yet seen anything that enables us to start wilson opposite revis. only then can you think of moving cro to safety.
Well I've seen some good things too but Wilson didn't play slot at all in College so that was a big transition coming into the NFL and playing nickel and he tackles fairly well. I just rather see Cro play the ball more then cover receivers.
one other thing: we need a capable backup qb, somebody who can come in amd play if sanchez plays crappy and gets yanked or hurt. other than mc elrhoy, a guy like orlovsky or joe webb would be nice to have. if o'connell knows defenses so well, why wasn't he suited up? we sure couldn't pull sanchez and expect anything with brunell in there!
I think Wilson, in year 3, might be able to step into the other corner spot opposite Revis. Cro there is still not a bad thing but I wouldn't mind seeing him as a possible FS. Not sure about Maybin as a SS. Hmmm...lots of questions to be answered. I'm slowly building my draft board and will be a bit more certain as we get closer. The only thing certain is we need 2 o-lineman, 2 or 3 LB'ers, a WR and Safety. I'll add more shortly.
Can't pass up the chance to be a GM. Actually its better to be a GM for another team. Lots less pressure  First I think the comments I see that Callahan should become the OC don't make sens. Callahan comes from a WC offense where the premium is on a quick releasel. a lot of option routes and fast/good decision making. These don't seem to fit the Sanchize's skill set. He'd best be in a system which features play action JMHO Second the comments that hope that Maybin will suddenly emerge as a significant pass rusher are also hopeful. First his is what he is. He's a situational speed rusher who one blocker can cover. He can get you coverage sacks, he can chase from behind and he's a good special teamer. For what he cost you, he's a damned fine pick up, but don't make him what he isn't. I think the Jets have some trouble here if the object is a one year fix, because I"m not sure you will have the cap room next season, with the big increases in cap costs you will have. However for this example lets assume you'll have 10-12MM in usable cap space The First thing I'd do is pay the best RT in FA whatever he wants. He's the key to your offense. There are a couple of draftnik on our board who think that there will be a couple of start ready OG's late in the first round. One of the best things the Jets have done in the draft recently was draft Brick and Mangold in the first round . Do yourselves a favor. Forget about the hoopla about a WR and do the dirty work. Get that FA RT and draft the great G Now if you are desperate for a WR there are several who can be had in the 3rd round that will have high rewards. This is reportedly a deep year for Wrs. BTW – the Steelers have one of the best young WR groups in the league, and IIRC, all of them came from the 3rd round or below. Kerley is a nice prospect. Holmes ….is what he is....talented and over priced. Burress is limited, but you can't deny his effectiveness pushing off....errr.... in the red zone. You can fight with me for the rights to Braylon or there will be plenty of WR FA's around Then to Defense. - I spoke with BB and told me that he's definitely going for either Mathis or Landry in the FA Safety market. He also said he's going to grab a Safety and CB early with 2 of his first 4 picks I'd take that as a hint and go after Landry or Mathis myself, though after you pick up the RT, you might not have a lot of $ for a second major purchase There will be 2-3 of nice young Safeties available in the 2nd rounds, so after I pick up the OG, that's what I'm doing, though you'll have to get behind the Pats for that one. Of the 2 Alabama S's, Barron is an excellent SS type, while Lester is more of a FA type. I'm hoping the Pats go for the latter. I think you have enough young Dlmen, especially since your system uses Dlmen as blocker eaters and are pretty much plug and place. The third place where the Jets should go is in the bottom rounds for pass rusher, but in the top rounds of the FA market for a pass rusher. I don't know who, but if the Pats can find 2 guy who can give them 20 sacks between them in Anderson and Carter, the Jets should be able to find one. But you will have to pay them. Well that would be my plan ….at this point....for the Jets.
one thing is certain, ken YOU could do a better job of drafting than the Billyboy has done for your Patriots in 2006-2011
Sounds good franken except I don't think we can afford a star pass rusher in F/A we should draft one.
Now would it be better to go for a RT in free agency and then a young one to develop in the draft? I feel like a rookie RT would be great if solid, but there would be much growing pains than if we got a veteran as a stop gap for 2-3 years. Also, what are the thoughts on keeping Jim at SS? If we get an athletic safety across Jim I personally think we can get by, but I wonder if more of the football experts on here think if this is a good idea or not?
I think we sign Jimmy to a 1 yr deal if hes healthy because hes much more athletic then Eric and SS is more about tackling and blitzing in Rex's scheme. If we got a FS whos in the 4.40-4.50 range and doesn't squat to piss thats pretty much all we need.
i've seen this cro to safety suggestion a few times around the board and i still don't get it. what is it about cromartie that you think he'll be a better safety than a corner? he's an extremely poor tackler. he also doesn't seem to be very intelligent. i have a hard time believing he'll be able to pick up a new position, especially safety, in a scheme as complex as ours. he's also not a bad corner at all. i know people get on him for giving up a few plays but there are very few #2 cbs that i would take over him right now.
The reason I suggest FS is because he's more of a zone player then straight up Man, and he has pretty good ballhawking instincts.
Yeah I think on obvious passing downs we can let him roam, but if he becomes full time I see him turning into Kerry Rhodes back there. Can make the big play, but if you need a tackle it is not gonna happen
That's what I was thinking. I think you need a top 15 guy at OT to be "comfortable" that he could start right away. The Pats got lucky getting Solder at 17 all the QB picks drove him down to them. On the other hand, there are a lot more examples of rookie Gs being picked at the bottom of the first round who stepped right in and started. The Jets desperately need, not just an adequate RT, but a very good one. You COULD get a pick in the draft, but its more likely they'll need some development with some ups and downs, and the Jets cannot afford "development time". So while the Jets cannot afford the risk of grabbing an OT in the draft. But an OG would be a lot less of a risk
Yeah its a real shame because the man is a straight up beast athletically he just needs to get some killer instincts and at least try to tackle people.
Cro has the necessary ballhawk skills, but he couldn't tackle a 100 pound woman unless he was going for number 9.
