On Callahan, putting aside whether he's personally angry about the Titans thing, just look at this choice in the same way you'd look at your own job. Not signing the K with the NYJ gives him more leverage so they'll pay him more $. Plus, if he goes to the Jets and the Jets have a sub 500 year, he/Rex/Tanny all could get fired, while if he goes with Gruden to some rebuild, he probably has two or three years of security.
Makes sense. He's just being smart. I just hope this stuff doesn't deter him from becoming the Jets' OC. He has a great track record, and his system fits Sanchez's strengths.
If callahan were to turn down the OC job with the Jets I think it would say a lot about his opinion of rex and/or sanchez.
I agree with that. If he takes an OC job somewhere else and is offered one here it is either because A. He likes the QB situation better or B. He thinks it will be better to work with that HC
Out of all reporters covering the Jets. Cimini has the least access to inside info. His bulk comes from disgruntled Jets and ex Jets. The guy was a hack at the news. He still lives up to his shitty reporting.
Yup. Callahan needs to be smart with his next move. If he ever wants to be a head coach again he needs to kick ass as an OC for three years or so-while if he fails as an OC in his next job, at 55 years old he'll never get another shot.
I think the writing is on the wall for Schotty. As for Callaghan, I would've thought the Jets would promote him for continuity's sake. If he doesn't want the job, so be it. He certainly can't be a hot candidate for anything given the performance of the line and his failure to fix the problems this year. PFT intimates that he hasn't signed an extension with the Jets because he wants to be available in case Gruden gets a HC job. Who knows? I'm sure there are a lot of directions the Jets can go re OC's
He probably has a better shot at becoming a HC candidate riding Gruden's coat tails than he would trying to fix the mess that Schotty has bestowed upon us. It worked for him the first time around. Plus, injuries aside, Bradford is simply a better quarterback, I don't care that he is having an off year. There are a lot of factors involved in Callahan's choice, not just his opinion of Rex and Tanny.
If this does happen, what kind of offense does Callahan run? All I know is that he was head coach when Rich Gannon had his mvp year.
All true, although I'm hearing Gruden to San Diego quite a bit, and that's even more enticing for Callahan (crappy division, good team with an established legit QB who's had a down year).
Exactly right. It's cutely worded. And, frankly, I think this is a manufactured story top to bottom. First off, why on earth would Bill Callahan sign ANY extension to his current OL Coach position with the number of coaching opportunities that are going to open up in just one week. Based solely on the hope that (a) Schottenheimer will be fired and (b) he's the Cimini-labeled "likely successor"? What if Rex/Tanny suddenly change his/their mind and keep Schotty? Or promote Matt Cavanaugh? Or even Tom Moore? So many variables, such an open market, and coaching such a transient occupation. If you miss an opportunity, you could be like Teddy Cottrell and sit by the phone so long without a call that you eventually have to declare yourself "retired." Rich Cementhead. He runs one that works and was one of the best in the league 4 of his 5 years (3 as OC and 2 as HC) in oakland.
I don't think it's fair to pin the line struggles on him this year. It's not like the Jets replaced Woody with anything viable. I think because he did such a good job with Hunter last year when Woody got hurt we thought the guy could work miracles. If anything I would look at it as he coached the strength of our offense over the last two seasons. He needs players though just like anyone else.
I wouldn't personalize it that much. It's probably his opinion of the offense as a whole and Rex. After all if only Sanchez is the problem, why not stick around? But I agree with you in general, it does say something about the Jets if Callahan would turn down a promotion here to go elsewhere. I also wonder if Callahan didn't like going into the season short stacked on the offensive line compared to previous years. Imagine if he suggested the Jets get help on the o-line but it got lost in the Asomungah chase?
Should Callahan go elsewhere, I would have to believe the change from Schottenheimer to Norv wouldn't be a complete overhaul. I'm sure a lot of the terminology is the same. Continuity is the reason they kept Schottenheimer on, not sure that should necessarily be a priority.
