Nice read. I would like to see us get a vet FA for RT, he would only need to be "OK" to be a big upgrade over what we presently have. I hate that the NFL has become such a one player sport - the QB was always key but now with it being such a passing league you realy do live or die by your QB's performance (yes, there are always exceptions such as the Ravens) - and at the moment we do not even have an adequate QB. I am not quite ready to give up on Sanchez entirely (no doubt that will be a bigger comfort to him than the $50m he will b paid through his rookie contract) but one more season without some serious improvement (and a new OC) will surely seal the deal on him.
sign a veteran RT. draft a safety (Mark Barron) and a WR (Mohammaed Sanu), and as unlikely as it is, I hope we make a play for Mario Williams.
Funny but, I watch so many teams with an elite pass rusher and the announcers keep saying this team NEEDS a complimentary pass rusher on the other side and then i think back to what we have...... yeah, we NEED pass rusher _ maybin should be that "Complimentary" guy not THE guy.
If you want a wr to help the 2012 team you probably have to pick him in rounds one or two. You might get lucky but third and fourth round picks rarely contribute as rookies at almost every position. If you want to improve on Hunter or Smith you also probably need to use one of your top two picks; those guys aren't great but it's very hard for a rookie third or fourth round pick to displace even a cruddy veteran. If you want to improve the pass rush you almot certainly have to use your first round pick to get your guy. Pass rushers get drafted very early. You need to look at free agency if you want to improve more than one or two of your starting spots for 2012; your third-seventh round picks are probably going to be depth and ST contributors in 2012
Mezz Excellent perspective indeed. Let me add my 2 cents from this point of view: a) For this team to succeed with Sanchez at QB we need a "relentless and consistent" running game. As you pointed out Green alone is not the answer, we need a feared running back that defenses have to plan for and a new OC staff that implements a game plan to match that.We can not give up the run at the first sign of trouble and force the kid to throw 60 times. So off season our priorities should be: Offensively - New coaching staff + RB. I hope we can target a monster free agent running back. then OL in the draft B) Defense needs to get quicker at the edges. OLB and Safeties and may be DE. Game plan is back to basics - Get the defense to keep us in the game and build an offense that grids it out, more suited to Sanchez's style. Getting a WR next year will be a luxury, perhaps a second big target TE if finances are there. From my view point if we do not get back to our true identity and a coaching mentality to match our personnel we will be back to the same BS. Trying to make Sanchez style look like Brady or Breese and carry the game.....FORGET ABOUT IT
We should draft... R1. RT R2. Backup RT R3. LT R4. Depth RT R5. Backup LT R6. Another RT for good measure R7. Long snapper UDFA. Another couple of vet RTs

If we could get an AJ Green in the draft I am all for it but the Jets have other issues such as not being able to cover a TE or a weak RT
You'd need to make a Julio Jones type move to get a AJ Green type like Blackmon-you're talking about trading a 2012 first and second, a 2013 first, and some third or fourth rounders to move up that high.
Also, the way I look at it if there is no offensive tackle available or no linebacker available the Jets should go wide receiver
The WR class is very deep this year. Its not as top heavy like last year's class with two WR with ELITE talent, but there a lot of WR that are going to be a solid #2 WR coming in. I really dont think we need to draft WR in round 1. Players like Marvin McNutt, Dwight Jones and a semi sleeper BJ Cunningham could be drafted after round 1 and contribute right away. BJ Cunningham could be grabbed in the 3rd and so can the other 3. They all have good size and speed. Safety must be picked up through FA. There are about 4 solid signings that could do this defense wonders. Michael Griffin or Dashon Goldson would be ideal. There are no safeties in this class that would really improve this team. Mark Barron would be an okay option, but he's going to be overdrafted bc he's the best safety in a bad class. RT and OLB are a must draft in round 1 unless someone who's by far ahead of everyone else on their draft boards
If we got Mario Williams we would be able to live without a stud safety. Our safeties get exposed because they are too slow to keep up with TEs for the amount of time we give QBs. If we had a passrusher like Mario Williams it would give Rex an amazing weapon to draw up some new schemes. Also it would help our defense enough that we could go first round pick WR and draft depth after that. Assuming of course we also sign a RT. I might be wrong but since we 6 million under the cap or around there this year aren't we allowed to carry some of that money over to next years cap?
Seems like we have so many needs that we would need 50% more draft picks to fulfill them all (If they work out). Free agency here we come. 42 years of this and I believe the play that defines the Jets is a 3rd and 8 where the QB checks down from the receiver running a 7 yard pattern to the one running a 5.
Great post. I agree 100% on what you think needs to be done. On Final Thought #1: For me Callahan is the best option to be our next OC for a number of reasons. Most importantly Rich Gannon. Looks what the guy did for Gannon's career. When Gannon came to the Raiders in 99 Callahan was the OC and up to that point Gannon had been an average NFL QB and a career journeyman never starting more than 12 games in a season. He never had a QB rating over 81, 99-2002 his ratings were 86.5, 92.4, 95.5, and 97.3. He has never thrown for over 2300 yards (although he also never started a full 16 games). Again from 99-02 his passing yardage was 3840, 3430, 3828, and in 02 he really blew up for 4689 yards. Gannon had never thrown more than 16 td passes 99-02: 24,28,27,26. The Raider offenses were also among the tops in the league during that time. 1999 they were 8th in points 5th in yards, 2000 3rd pts 6th yards, 2001, 4th pts and 7th, and the Super Bowl year when Callahan took over as HC they were 2nd in pts and 1st in yards. Add to that Callahan has coached in a Super Bowl, just missed another because of the tuck rule, and he knows our personnel which would make it a quicker transition. That is a pretty impressive resume so to me it's a no brainer I would give the guy the job tomorrow. On Final thought # 2: Revis almost single handedly won us that game on Sunday. The guy played what I think may have been his best game and that is saying a lot. I absolutely agree we cannot let the situation with him get ugly lets do the right thing and extend this guy now. Players of this calibur come around once in a lifetime you dont let them walk in the middle of their prime playing years.
I have a feeling that we may end up picking a QB in round 3 or 4 of the 2012 draft. Maybe even 2. Call it a hunch.
