I'm sure I could give this more thought, but I'd really like to save that until after the season. That said, if the issues are protection for Mark Sanchez, a bit more run blocking, and another solid receiving option, I think we perhaps forget how a big tightend could help upgrade ALL of those areas.
Haha Stephen A Smith on ESPN 1050 brought up Peyton Manning to the Jets, he ripped the Jets fans who are saying that they dont need Manning... "Mark Sanchez, Peyton Manning..... A DOG CAN FIGURE THAT OUT....but oh the Jets fans saying injured neck....WHAT are you nuts, this isnt even a question, Manning can be the started for as long as he wants, and Sanchez can sit on the bench"
I'm not down on Holmes and Burress as some of you are. I do agree that Holmes has not earned the pay raise he got. But I think part of it is that Sanchez can't get him the ball. Santonio seems like guy who needs to be in rhythm, getting the ball more than 3-4x a game. The guy is a playmaker. His history shows that. Sanchez needs to get him the ball more. Having said that, I still think he has maturity issues. No more stupid TD dances. He's got to step up and be a leader. I still don't understand why the Jets had a hard on about Burress. He's got great size and that's it. I would have rather had him as a third receiver, but there was no way of the Jets were keeping he and Edwards. The top priorities I think are OL (specifically RT and maybe LG) S and they still need a pass rushers. I wonder of they can do better than Devito.
I think Sanchez, at best, will be a game management type QB. That's not necessarily a knock. As the previous 2 years showed, with a good O-line, a good rushing attack and a solid defense, he can win. His stats improved this year, but as we all see, his decision making and accuracy have not improved. A lot of his performance certainly is affected by the VERY questionable play calling as well as a poor O-line. The accuracy is a concern, because the Jets rarely take chances downfield (which could be because WR's can't get separation). Still, 56% completion in a short yardage passing attack is worrisome. I thought he'd get to 60% at least this year. I just don't see him developing into a game changing, carry the team on his back type of QB. Hey, most QB's aren't. If they improve around him and play to his strengths, he can be a, "Just be solid and don't lose the game" type of QB. That's not the end of the world.
Shonn Greene is just not explosive at all, he doesn't have that burst through the hole that I think a good featureback should have but I think hes a good backup. We REALLY need a pass rush, our DB's are too talented to not make the QB throw at them faster. We just can not get to the QB consistently enough at all.
So on the incredibly slim, off chance that Manning came to the Jets, Smith thinks they would/could still pay Sanchez to sit on the bench? Really? WOW.
LOL @ ppl calling out Shonn Greene knowing that the OL and play-calling have been an issue all year. WTF is Shonn Greene supposed to do when he has no holes to run through (Weeks 1-6) or when we abandon the run? Greene has been solid this year. Far from a problem.
Trade him to Seattle for a 2nd im sure Pete Carrol can turn him into the next Manning. Its all Shottys fault Sanchez can't throw a 5 yard pass.
Shonn Greene was not supposed to be Adrian Peterson, 1000 yards this season and counting he has done his job. While Sanchez our next "franchise" Qb has failed miserably.
Shonn Greene is a backup, doesn't have to be Adrian Peterson but jesus can he hustle a bit more I've seen the o line create some nice holes in the running game but Greene gets tripped up too much and doesn't break enough arm tackles for a "big" back.
I don't understand this. Have you not been watching him the second half of the year? He's been finding small holes, catching passes, and getting necessary yardage with bruised ribs. He doesn't have to be a feature back. I don't believe a team needs a "feature" back to win these days. You need a solid platoon. Obviously LT is done, and we've abandoned the run too much to guage where either back is at right now. Coupled with the OL and pass game problems, I figured it'd be obvious to everyone that Greene ISN'T the problem. But holy fuck, obviously that's not the case.
Listen I really like Shonn Greene but I've seen him drop a lot of passes out of the backfield, he really doesn't explode through holes, the OL has actually done well in the run game for the most part. For what Rex wanted to do this season yes he did need a featureback. Hes a solid player though and I hope we keep em but not so much as a starter. Just my two cents.
I think he does explode through holes when they are there. We just don't stick to the run/PA pass attack. That's our game, run and play-action. We've strayed away from that and that's why I think our offense sucks. That and Sanchez is middle of the pack. You stop the run or get ahead, you beat the NY Jets.
I would love a stud TE. Sanchez has shown he likes throwing to the TEs but Keller seems to give up on plays. Not to mention he adds 0 run blocking into the mix.
Obviously nobody would turn down Manning, but the Colts certainly are not letting him go. Let's be realistic. Hunter needs to go. Schotty needs to go. Sanchez plays great when the line protects him and the running game is strong. Schotty's plays take a long time to develop, so it all boils down to the line. We need to sign someone solid to replace Hunter. The other concern is safety. The 99 yard touchdown last game was inexcusable, and we've been burned by big 3rd down plays all season in the secondary. Eric Smith plays hard, but he's not that good. Leonard is crucial, Pool is alright. Keller is questionable. I'd be ok with shopping for a new TE this season. 2 seasons in a row I felt he would break out, but he's been spotty, and had a lot of drops this year. I'd be happy bringing Braylon back and ditching Plax. Braylon and Sanchez had good chemistry, especially on the deep plays.
I can't believe anyone would think we DON'T need to upgrade the WR position. Come on now. That's priority 1A on offense, with the line being 1B.
I love how the guy defending Sanchez is putting the blame on a guy who has done his job this season and is the least of our problems. Have you been watching the games?
