Schotty was not a problem today at all. Our defense was complete garbage whether you want to blame the player or the coaching is up to you.
When the D is built on scheme to cover some of the flaws of it's athletes, that defense can sure go to shit when the scheme gets discovered......
I think his play calling is too conservative for the personel we have. They are better at attacking now playing on their heels. Sent from my SGH-T589 using Tapatalk
Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Haloti Ngata and the supporting cast in Baltimore made Rex Ryan's D what it is...or what people think it is....not Rex Ryan. Pettine calls Rex's plays...from a playbook that requires better personnel than the Jets have to make it work properly.
because you coach to the strength of your personel. he shouldn't ask sanchez to do things that can hurt the team.
Sure. The Jets main weakness on defense is speed, their lack of it when faced with teams that are littered with it causes games like today. There's really nothing you can do against speed if you don't have the personnel to stop it. Pettine was also the DC in 2009 when the Jets had the #1 overall defense, I think he's earned a bit of the benefit of the doubt. The Jets offense on the other hand has been a comedy of errors all season. Yes, the offensive line has been terrible and has been the main cause of it but games like today you're reminded of how little feel it appears Schottenheimer has for the game at hand. Today for example the Jets start the game off running it 4 times for 33 yards. Then they go shotgun on first down, empty backfield on 2nd down then 3rd and long. You and I both know this happens far too often with the Jets offense. The Jets should be trying to win ugly with the running game and controlling the clock but the playcalling a lot of times doesn't allow for that.
While I agree with a lot of what you said, I have to disagree on a few. Today the offense wasn't bad, it was in a hole created by the defense and we had to get away from what we do. Pettine does not get a pass, because if anything, this year shows he's at fault because we haven't really lost anyone of importance at the start of the year and the defense is a shell of its former self. Who's that fall on? I understand our linebackers are slow, but that's not the only problem. Why are recievers running free? Revis is the best bump n run corner ever, he plays off consistently this season. There aren't many guys who are gonna out run him so I don't get it. Its things like this that he should catch heat for, he gets no free pass. Sent from my SGH-T589 using Tapatalk
It's exactly because we haven't lost many players of importance that the defense has regressed. The LBs weren't young outside of Harris when Rex & Mike got here and they've only gotten older. That's where the defensive issues lie, the LBs can't cover in space and they can't seal the edge quick enough so fast RBs rip off big runs consistently. The safeties have been subpar and while Leonhard knows this defense inside and out he's a physical liability. Those aren't coaching issues those are personnel issues Revis plays off man because he can, he can play off man and not get beat by a double move. Off man is good because it allows him to see routes develop which allows for him undercut and jump routes making plays on passes. QBs don't throw often in his direction so it doesn't really matter if he plays off or bump & run because he's the best CB in the game and is equally efficient at both. The offense wasn't bad today? Come on, man. Two of the four first TDs that Philly scored were the direct result of poor offense. Can't say the defense was bad but the offense wasn't when the Jets punted 6 times and turned it over 4 times
No the offense wasnt that bad. They cant score everytime they touch the ball, and by the second half, they were so deflated by the poor play of the defense they clearly mailed it in. Poor offense? One player doesnt make the offense poor.
Put it in simple terms: Offense is not in need of total overhaul. Defense? You cannot say the same. (If Kenrick Ellis grows up to be a good NT, then maybe Jets are set at DL for now, with Pouha emerging. Revis and Cro... Ok. Harris... is good enough. That's about it. Safeties both need some serious upgrading. OLBs - both - need serious upgrading. Bart needs his replacement. That's more than half the starting roster right there.)
Pouha is 32 years old, he's no spring chicken even though he's played well for most of the year. He's been great against the run. Jury's out on Ellis, although obviously he's very young and raw with a lot of potential. I'd say LB and Safety have to be higher priority than DL right now.
So you are saying the defense needs a total overhaul INCLUDING the DL, which is what I have been saying *the overhaul part, not the DL part.* Your point?
This is true, making Pettine basically a waste of a coach. If you have a yes-man as a coordinator then you're locked into doing things one way. The Jets problem is that when the defense needs adjustments (both in game and through the course of a season) they can't do anything. In Baltimore they had two advantages. First, there was always a head coach that things needed to be run through, always a person to answer to. And also, obviously, there was a far higher talent level, so if they did want to play through things, they had the skill to make it work. Right now the Jets don't have a backup plan, and might not have the players to even make Plan A work. They need to get someone in there that can have a contrasting plan to get things going if Rex's plan isn't working. Someone that can actually have a differing voice/system so offenses can't just pick out the same stuff week to week.
Shottenheimer designs and calls terrible plays, game in game out. The Jets occasionally win in spite of him, not because him. Pettine at least shows something, sometimes. Mo Wilkerson is already starting and doing fine as a rookie and Ellis has shown quickness and potential as a rookie. Pouha is 32 but he has been very stout up the middle against the run in general and certainly has at least another good year or two him in. The DL is just fine. What we need on defense is some speed LB that can rush the QB and a safety to replace Leonard.
