By now we're all well aware of Maybins success with the Jets racking up 6 sacks and 4 forced fumbles in just 9 games. When he first signed with the Jets and showed some promise as a pass rusher there was a legitimate complaint from a lot of us that he didn't do anything as a pass rusher other than speed rush to the outside. Obviously NFL tackles would figure that out quickly and he probably would be nothing but a flash in the pan.

I came away from watching the Washington game feeling extremely impressed with his performance, not because of the one play that sealed the win for us, but for what I perceived as a very well rounded pass rushing performance that was a far cry from his first couple of preseason games as a Jet. So I went back and documented every one of his plays from scrimmage and took screen shots from 12 plays in particular that showed me much more than a speed rush to the outside.

By my count he was in for 39 plays and caused 8 QB pressures (including the strip sack) in those 39 plays. It's possible that I was a bit generous when calling something a "pressure" and a couple of them were him with someone else, but I think I was pretty fair. He was also held 2 times when it wasn't called. He successfully executed several pass rush moves including a speed rush, bull rush, setup outside - club inside, and a spin move. They lined him up at RDE, LDE, ROLB, LOLB, ILB/NT (not sure what to call it) and he rushed the A, B, C and D gaps during this game.

It's very exciting to me to see not only how far Maybin has progressed but how creative the coaching staff is starting to get with him as he learns the system. I don't know how much more he can grow as a pass rusher, but he's picked up quite a bit in a very short time here. I hope we can lock him up long term.

On this play he start out with his typical outside rush against a TE but once he gets him flowing outside he clubs the left shoulder of TE and switches inside which forces Grossman out of the pocket. Maybin then goes back outside and gets a pressure on the QB causing an incomplete pass. This wasn't the best inside club move, but it is progress and coupled with his high motor allowed him to work back outside to disrupt the play with a QB pressure.

ILB/NT (not sure what to call this)

Here he started out lined up at RDE, but prior to the snap shifted to a 2 point stance directly over the NT. He worked the center with a physical/speed rush on his right shoulder which allowed for Harris to twist inside to rush up the middle. Once Maybin moved the center outside the middle, he spun towards Grossman. Maybe nearly got knocked over but still pushed the pocket and given another 1/2 second would have probably sacked Grossman. Grossman got rid of the ball fairly quickly and completed the pass for a first down.

Starts out with typical outside rush against RT but once he gets him flowing outside he cuts underneath him only to be greeted by a guard. He outphysicals the guard attacking his left shoulder and gets by him only to run into the center who he also blows by inside. He then combines with Wilkerson on a QB pressure forcing Grossman to roll left and complete a short pass on 3rd and 11.

Maybin splits the center and the guard with too much speed for either player to handle consiering Pace was lined up over the guard and Dixon was lined up on the Centers left shoulder. Maybin gets yet another QB pressure forcing Grossman to throw off his back foot and throw an INT. Unfortunately we had a holding penalty in the defensive backfield negating the play.

Starts upfield and spins inside on the LT. Maybin beats the LT on the spin move but gets held, he keeps going to try and get away and the LT again holds him to the end of the play and it's not called.

Maybin straight bullrushes the center back three yards and then gets separation but the QB hits a quick out.

Gives the LT a quick shoulder juke outside then goes inside nearly untouched and gets another QB pressure causing an off target pass and an incompletion. The LT had to pay attention to Eric Smith coming off the edge too, but had a RB to pick him up.

Sets up RT outside then attacks his inside shoulder, pushes him back and goes inside only to be met by the RG. He then pushes the RG back a little, fights him off and puts pressure on the QB causing an incompletion. Calvin Pace initially had pressure but Grossman escaped him until Maybin got there.

I love that he is trying new moves even if they aren't successful. I did see one play though where he ran hard outside looking like he was just trying to get around the edge but then he cut inside with a bull rush and got through. Nothing came of his play because the QB got rid of the ball already but it still left me impressed.

He starts straight into the RT he just beat for the strip sack and spins to the inside, drives him backwards a few yards then releases outside to help pressure Grossman who is rolling right to get away from Pace applying pressure. They both pressure him into throwing it away.

And here's a dump of all my notes. Sorry for the poor image quality and sloppy arrows.

    Code:
quarter	down	distance	lined up	offense positioned	rush type notes
1st	2nd	7 LOLB left hash outside speed rush	Maybin lines up in a 2 point stance and takes his most common outside speed rush. The RT easily washes him out of the play. It's a screen play though, and Maybin chases it down from behind to make the tackle at the first down marker. Side note, he came with the tomahawk chop on the tackle and had a good shot at stripping the ball.
1st	2nd	8 LOLB right hash outside speed rush to club inside	Starts out with his typical outside rush against a TE but once he gets him flowing outside he clubs the left shoulder of TE and switches inside which forces Grossman out of the pocket. Maybin then goes back outside and gets a pressure on the QB causing an incomplete pass. This wasn't the best inside club move, but it is progress and coupled with his high motor allowed him to work back outside to disrupt the play with a QB pressure.
1st	3rd	8 ILB/NT right hash bullrush/spin Started out lined up at RDE, but prior to the snap shifted to a 2 point stance directly over the NT. He came worked the center with a physical/speed rush on his right shoulder which allowed for Harris to twist inside to rush up the middle. Once Maybin moved the center outside the middle, he spun towards Grossman. Maybe nearly got knocked over but still pushed the pocket and given another 1/2 second would have probably sacked Grossman. Grossman got rid of the ball fairly quickly and completed the pass for a firstdown.
2nd	3rd	11 LDE left hash outside/in speed rush	Starts out with typical outside rush against RT but once he gets him flowing outside he cuts underneath him only to be greeted by a guard. He outphysicals the guard attacking his left shoulder and gets by him only to run into the center who he also blows by inside. He then combines with Wilkerson on a QB pressure forcing Grossman to roll left and complete a short pass on 3rd and 11.
2nd	2nd	10 LOLB right hash na This was a run play and maybin effectively forced the play inside by forcing the lead blocker to stay outside.
2nd	3rd	7 ILB right hash inside speed Maybin splits the center and the guard with too much speed for either player to handle consiering Pace was lined up over the guard and Dixon was lined up on the Centers left shoulder. Maybin gets yet another QB pressure forcing Grossman to throw off his back foot and throw an INT. Unfortunately we had a holding penalty in the defensive backfield negating the play.
2nd	3rd	10 RDE right hash inside speed He tried to go inside on the LT but gets swallowed up and manhandled. It looked like a hold probably should have been called but it wasn't too agregious.
2nd	2nd	10 LOLB right hash outside/in speed rush	sets his guy up outside then beats him inside, but it was a quick 3 step drop pass and grossman released it as he beat his man inside.
2nd	1st	10 ROLB left hash na screen play to the other side that harris snuffed for a loss
2nd	2nd	11 RDE right hash bullrush (attempt)	Maybe stunted to the middle here and got double teamed by both the center and the guard. Grossman had to get rid of it quickly because of a corner blitz pressure. This ended up being grounding.
2nd	3rd	21 RDE right hash inside spin Starts upfield and spins inside on the LT. Maybin beats the LT on the spin move but gets held. Maybin keeps going to try and get away and the LT again holds him to the end of the play and it's not called.
2nd	1st	10 ROLB left hash outside speed rush	Takes his typical outside speed rush against the LT and is doubled by the RB on the outside. QB got rid of it as the RB engaged the DT.
2nd	2nd	10 ILB/NT left hash bullrush Maybin straight bullrushes the center back three yards and then gets separation but the QB hits a quick out.
2nd	1st	goal (12)	RDE right hash ?? he took a couple steps forward then shuffled towards the middle of the line and never engaged with anyone. Maybe he was supposed to be spying someone here. It's hard to say.
2nd	2nd	goal (5)	RDE right hash inside speed He tried a speed rush inside and was met with a double team, then dropped and tried to jump and tip the quick pass.
2nd	3rd	goal (5)	RDE right hash inside speed again met by a double team and took a good punch to the chest from the guard. Again grossman quickly got rid of it.
3rd	3rd	9 RDE left hash inside speed Gives the LT a quick shoulder juke outside then goes inside nearly untouched and gets another QB pressure causing an off target pass and an incompletion. The LT had to pay attention to Eric Smith coming off the edge too, but had a RB to pick him up.
3rd	2nd	16 ROLB centered na run the opposite way for a short gain
3rd	3rd	13 ILB/NT right hash bull rush Fighting inside with both the center and the RG on a bullrush. Didn't really get anywhere.
4th	2nd	10 ROLB right hash outside rush takes his typical outside rush and the LT takes care of him easily
4th	2nd	14 LDE left hash outside rush takes his typical outside rush and the RT knocks him down.
4th	3rd	6 RDE centered bull rush pushes the LT back a couple of yards before grossman releases it quickly against 7 man blitz.
4th	3rd	5 LDE left hash inside bullrush set up RT outside then attacks his inside shoulder, pushes him back and goes inside only to be met by the RG. He then pushes the RG back a little, fights him off and puts pressure on the QB causing an incompletion. Calvin Pace initially had pressure but Grossman escaped him until Maybin got there.
4th	3rd	7 RDE right hash various Started with a bullrush on the LT, then went inside and was met by the LG, tried a spin move without much success and the pass was off.
4th	1st	10 RDE right hash outside rush takes his typical outside rush and gets handled pretty well by the LT, then drops as the QB starts to pass.
4th	2nd	10 ROLB right hash bull rush bull rushed the LT, driving him back a few yards and shrinking the pocket.
4th	3rd	10 LDE right hash outside/in speed rush	Started with his typical outside speed rush on the RT but once he gets him flowing outside he clubs his inside shoulder and breaks inside for his strip sack to seal the game.
4th	1st	10 LDE left hash inside/out He starts straight into the RT he just beat for the strip sack and spins to the inside, drives him backwards a few yards then releases outside to help pressure Grossman who is rolling right to get away from Pace applying pressure. They both pressure him into throwing it away.
4th	2nd	10 ROLB left hash bullrush He runs right into the LT and gives him a good pop in the chest but then just steps backwards and "spys".
4th	3rd	10 LDE left hash outside/in speed rush	he starts outside then quickly darts inside but is met by both the RG and the center who easily slow him down as the QB passes for a first.
4th	3rd	10 RDE right hash bullrush bull rushed the LT and got shut down pretty well
4th	1st	10 LDE right hash inside bullrush Went inside and bullrushed the guard, didn't gain much ground on a quick pass.
4th	2nd	5 RDE left hash outside speed rush	took his typical outside speed rush against the LT and was handled pretty well
4th	3rd	5 ILB/NT left hash bullrush took a straight bullrush on the center and drove him back about 7 yards before getting off him towards the QB as he was releasing it.
4th	1st	10 LDE right hash outside speed rush	went outside and around the RT with a straight shot at the QB as he released.
4th	2nd	6 LDE left hash inside/out went inside and spun outside but the RT picked it up well.
4th	3rd	6 LDE centered na draw to the opposite side
4th	1st	10 LDE left hash outside rush quick screen the opposite way
4th	1st	10 LDE left hash bullrush bullrushes the RT into Grossman forcing an offtarget pass resulting in an INT.

Wow, thanks for all of this!

It shows how much more compelte of a rusher Maybin has become over the course of the season. Using a variety of moves to get to the QB including some power moves. This is a very good sing for our team and for him long term.

    Absolutely amazing breakdown.

I like that he is trying new things and with some coaching in the offense and another year in the system he can fair much better.

    Excellent job.

    Go to this TGG link

    http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=69608

    and read this:

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...ack-monster-rex-ryan-defense-article-1.989697

about Coach Smith, who's working with Maybin everyday.

Here's one interesting line from that article:

The intern helped compartmentalize Maybin’s workload. He told him to shelve most of his pass-rush moves and focus on his speed rush. Soon, they focused on his up-and-under move, which worked to perfection in a game-sealing sack against the Redskins. Maybin’s grasp of the defense grew at a faster rate than the coaching staff believed possible thanks, in part, to Smith’s tutelage.

    Here's another one:

Maybin’s improbable rise has boosted an otherwise pedestrian pass rush. According to Pro Football Focus, Maybin has accounted for 20 total pressures on 129 pass-rushing snaps. He brings pressure every 6.45 pass-rushing snaps, ninth best in the league. By comparison, Cowboys’ perennial Pro Bowler DeMarcus Ware brings pressure every 7.47 pass-rushing snaps.
