So, over the course of 2.5 seasons the total is: 17-18-8 which means we've had the lead 17 times versus haven't had the lead 26 times.
Playing catch up when your RB is averaging almost 9 yards per carry and your only down by 13 points at the half is hardly a case for let's abandon the run and throw it every down. Was the running game so ineffective that he felt the need to throw it 31 times in the second half?
what it means is in almost 3 years we have only trailed one more time than we have not trailed and it's a problem that started probably late in the 2010 season when our O went through a rough stretch and continued this year w/ the awful OL and running game we have had for a good portion of the season. They were only down 3 pts at the half but obviously the running wasn't leading to points, right? Thomas Jones averaged under 4 YPC, our YPC was so good b/c we surprised them w/ Tony Richardson who had 5 carries for 34 yds(6.8 YPC) so we weren't running the ball that well. We lost that game b/c of Favre, he had opportunities all day and failed. That's also why we choked down the stretch. we scored 81 pts in the 1st qtr on offense in 2008, that averages out to almost 1 TD per game.
You can spin it however you want and make whatever excuses like you usually do, but the main thing to take away from those numbers is that we have not had the lead 26 times -- 9 more times than we have had the lead. That's not exactly ideal evidence if you're trying to support the OC.
I'm with junc on this one. That stat can be seen from both sides, and considering that we usually have one less o series in the first quarter, that number fits better in a pro-schotty argument. I don't believe Schotty is the devil and he's to blame for everything that goes wrong with the team (you're welcome, Schotty), but he's been clearly guilty of more than a couple of things: a) He doesn't read the game, breaking the rhythm when the O starts to work, calling what could be good plays in bad times. b) Doesn't read the game, not modifying when things are clearly not working. c) Not exploiting the other team's weakness, either right from the start (passing against a weak rush D, or viceversa), or through the game (suddenly stop using plays that really are working in a game) d) More than a few awfully designed plays.
FTR, I haven't once placed all the blame on Schotty; I'm on record pointing out all of the Offensive problems. But when a team is constantly Offensively mediocre and totally inept in the 1st Quarter - despite different personnel - eventually the OC no longer gets a pass. The stats I'd really like to see annexed to the ones Junc posted are the actual 1st QTR scores when we've had the lead, when we've trailed, and when we've been tied. If memory serves me correctly, I remember several games in which we were leading 3-0, down 3-0, and tied 0-0 at the end of the 1st. That's unacceptable in a large sample size such as 3 seasons.
was going to post something similar. that stat is more indicative of good d than anything i think, because we know that first quarter touchdowns have been a problem for this team spanning back at least 3 years, so with all the lack of touchdowns, we still manage a lead in some of those games after the first? im willing to bet most of the leads were in fact 3-0 or something similarly unimpressive as far as offensive prowess goes.

You expect this defense to shut out offenses until the Jets score first? You just used an excuse to try to disprove an "excuse" even though my point is exactly how Rex wants this team run. Try again.
who said the 1st qtr O was covering the D's ass? IO said the 1st qtr O was fine until about midway through 2010, the problems have been overblown especially when more often than not we kick to start games and lose a 1st qtr possession b/c of it.
The Jets kicked off against Washington, and before the O ever took the field they were down by 7. Perhaps with DeVito out that was not shocking, and him being a great defender against the run, most likely he would have made a difference if he was in there. The point is even a very good to great overall D is going to be subject to a drop off if key players are not in there. And DeVito has been very good against the run.
Dude, you're delusional in your defense of Schotty. Delusional. Schotty has had years to produce. I think the key highlighted stat so far is this one: 1QTR OFFENSE TOTAL: 40 points 1QTR DEFENSE TOTAL: 74 points I didn't actually check this stat myself, but it confirmed what I already had been feeling this season. Not only is defense keeping us in the game, but they're outscoring our offensive unit in the first quarter. Defense is playing their balls off to keep us in games, to the point where they're having to do offenses job because WE CAN'T FUCKING SCORE. You can blame the QB, you can blame the Oline, you can blame the receivers, you can blame everyone else except the person whose job it is to develop those people and give them well designed plays to execute on. But at the end of the day it's Schottys responsibility.
The real numbers are: 1QTR OFFENSE TOTAL: 24 points (Revis INT, McKnight KOR, Safety) 1QTR DEFENSE TOTAL: 60 points (INT return SD, Fumble return BALT) 24 points in 12 games in the 1st quarter. 2 points per game. Someone defend that please.
