That's an unfair comparison, since GB along with NO is the class of the league on O right now. Holmes is certainly an above average receiver, even if he's usually double teamed. But... I was talking about the team as a whole. The D has above average personnel at several positions, even if it is not playing as well as the last two years.
I don't think the D has above average players anywhere outside the CB's and David Harris. I don't actually think Calvin Pace is above average at LOLB at this point. I certainly don't think Sione Pouha is above average at NT. I think Rex's schemes give the illusion of a good defense but that when push comes to shove that defense generally can be exploited pretty easily which is why the Jets keep giving up long game-losing drives at the end of the game. I actually think the defense hasn't been consistently good in the absence of Kris Jenkins. I think the Jet's schedule has been somewhat forgiving in the last two seasons but that when it hasn't been kind the Jets have tended to give up points to good offenses. In 2009 they were at peak performance with the NFL staggering slightly under the assault of Rex's schemes fully unleashed for the first time. The Jets actually shut down several really good offenses that year because those offenses were overly-reliant on the passing game and when they couldn't do that well they were kind of screwed. San Diego in the playoffs is the poster boy in this category. Last year there was a generally good performance on defense but the Jet gave up a lot of points to the Patriots and Bears late in the season before settling down for the playoffs until the Steelers unmasked them in the AFC Championship game. This year the defense has ranged from good to disaster area depending on who they were playing. The loss to the Raiders happened because the Jets gave up 234 yards on the ground. Good defenses don't do that. The first loss to the Patriots was a team defensive failure as the Jets stopped nothing the Patriots were trying that day. The loss to Denver late was the inability to stop a mobile QB. BTW, Santonio Holmes is not much more than an above average receiver at this point. There are a dozen receivers in the NFL who are clearly better than him and probably another handful that can make a claim. That's kind of the definition of above average.
He's an outright good NT. He's not great due to his inability to push a pocket. I find that's due to being tired because your offense has a TOP of 23:32 There was nothing wrong the with the scheme, it was the players inability to tackle. That's been known since the post-game presser after the AFCCG
Wrong. Sione is an above average NT and a great value for what we pay him. Yea that's why they able to be the #1 and #3 defense. What are you complaining about here? Kris Jenkins only played 6 snaps under Rex Ryan so you are basically saying the defense hasn't been good since Eric Mangini left.:rofl2:
That at the end of both seasons they looked like the 25th defense not the 1st and the 3rd. The Jets lost two AFC Championship games because smoke and mirrors blew away in the wind when a strong offense came calling and forced the Jets to play it straight up. Kris Jenkins was hurt in the 6th game of 2009. That's when the smoke and mirrors started and they haven't gone away since. Why do the Jets keep folding at the end of games now? Because they're playing 6 and 7 defensive backs because they can't get enough pressure on the QB to stop him from completing whatever he wants to at the end of the game. The Jets are 4-7 right now if Tony Romo and Stevie Johnson don't hand them games at the end. That's just reality. Anybody who thinks this Jets defense is anything special at all based on the talent just isn't watching very closely. It's all schemes, and when the opponent figures out the schemes and isn't playing catch with Darrelle Revis on the last drive or hyper-imaginating his latest brilliant touchdown dance before he catches the ball they're also pretty bad at the end. Just like they have been in two straight AFC championship games. Sione Pouha is not an above average NT. An above average NT is not a 2 down player who keeps getting pulled at the end because he has no value against the opponent's passing attack.
this person on nfl network just said sanchez is one of the 3 worst QB's in the league. don't know who it was. looked like a fantasy show.
If you use the "if" game I could say that the Jets would be 7-4 if Cromartie hadn't fumbled the kickoff vs. Oakland. They could have been 8-3 if Sanchez doesn't throw the pick six against Denver. You could can play the "if'" game all day long. Why when the Jets force a fumble (ie. against Romo) it's seen as Romo giving them the game? Sometime's I wish that Revis didn't intercept Romo's late throw and the Jets would have just stopped the Comboys in "normal" fashion and still have the Jets win the game (perhaps in overtime). Maybe then the Jets would get some credit for a win. Simply put, the Jets defense this year has given up less points then all but 6 teams this year. And that is considering (what most people agree) is a less than dominating offense with a lot of three and outs. Considering the Jets "D" has also scored 4 TD's the adjusted defensive points against would put them as #4 behind the league. Is it as good as they've been in the past? No, but this is still a top 5-10 defense in the league. If it's all scheming then why don't more teams score more against the Jets. In a sense, it really doesn't really matter how much "pure talent" the Jets D has at the moment. The most important factor is how the Jets play in this system. Actually, the fact that the Jets can get good defensive performances from what some would consider marginal talent is a positive sign because excellent coaching will lead to sustained positive performance. Just because the Jets did lose their last game in each of the last two years (as every team in the playoffs do) doesn't mean their efforts and results over the regular seasons and playoffs is negated.
When you look at the Jets defensive performance this season you have to take into account the fact that neither the Jaguars nor the Dolphins had anything going on offense at the time the Jets played them. Those were like gimme's handed to the Jets defense because both teams were just miserable at the time the Jets played them. Outside of those 2 games the defense has looked average to poor. In fact if you remove the Jaguars from the equation the Jets drop right down to middle of the pack, which is where they belong.
for the record ... Dustin Keller is a Top 5 tight end in the league ... or damn close. There are only 4 or 5 TEs with better numbers and all of them have been targeted FAR more than he has.
The Kid is still young. He is no VET. And not a Top Teir TE. He is no Gronk or Hernandez for that matter
Keller isn't even top 5 in fantasy. Take into account the other things he doesn't do well and top ten is a stretch.
This +1. And remember how Jets fans were all over Pennington because he couldn't win the big games, while this kid has more big wins in two years than any Jets QB.
The guy is still young and improving. Who are the TEs you'd trade him straight up for. The list won't be too long.
