Holmes can play for another 10 years and he'll never make a play like that. I was all for signing Braylon instead of Holmes, and that play is just one example of why he's a better player ... Especially on THIS team.
No, it's an example of why he's a different player. Given both have shown a propensity for behaviour that stands a decent chance of incurring suspensions, I'm entirely supportive of the club keeping one and not the other. If the team had re-signed Edwards and let Holmes walk, right about now a bunch of people would be moaning about how the missing piece to the offence is Santonio Holmes.
Yes they are different ... and on this team the correct guy would have been Edwards. He's much more physical after the catch, can fight for the football, helps in the run game, and doesn't put the ball on the ground as often as Holmes does. Holmes is a finesse guy ... much better suited for a team like New Orleans or San Diego. We're not a finesses offense. And For the record, just about every downfield pass I can remember Sanchez connecting on in his career was to Edwards.
It just sucks that Braylon wanted big money from us and when he couldn't get it elsewhere he signed for practically nothing.
There was a ready made FA replacement for Edwards available in Burress. He may not have Edwards' speed, but he does have the size and the physical capabilities to do everything else that Braylon did and more. I can see why they made the choice they did - the problem isn't so much the receiving corps but the calls made to utilise them, and I don't see that having Edwards instead of Burress or Holmes would do anything to fix that. A good OC/QB combination would be having a lot of fun with this receiving corps, frailties in the line notwithstanding. In fact, having Holmes come underneath for quick balls out would be a hugely useful asset given the turnstile that is Hunter; the fact that he isn't being properly targeted isn't his fault. The issue lies with OC and/or QB, and that debate is being done to death in other threads. Blaming the changes in receivers for the failings of the offence this season is like complaining that the arrangement of the deckchairs caused the sinking of the Titanic.
Who were the WRs at Jets West this summer? Wasn't it Braylon and not Holmes? All that work and chemistry waisted.
edwards/sanchez destroying champ bailey was great last year. holmes wasnt there. braylon was, and he said he would take a pay cut to stay. i saw a interview with braylon on nfl network earlier this week, and he said he wanted to stay in new york pretty bad, but bluh bluh bluh everything happens for a reason type of thing.
My two biggest takeaways from this video? - Moving pockets on several of those big plays, something we have seen next to never this year. Where is this element of the offense? - Mark actually making it to his second read is dangerous. He can't even get to the second read this year with the time he is getting in the pocket.
I think there's merit to the idea that Edwards helped the offense be more complete than what Plax brings to the table. He stretched the field which allowed more room for Cotch, Keller and Holmes to work underneath and the running game had to deal with safeties less often. He also blocked downfield more effectively than Plax does. We couldn't afford his initial asking price. And then both sides were too proud to do the smart thing. Now though, some of the fans would like him back. Who knows what the two sides are thinking? Especially since Braylon landed on the 8-1 '9ers.
That video just goes to show if our O-Line stepped it up this season, for both the run and pass protection, we would probably be in the tops of the league in Offensive statistics.
I was talking about this off the board the other day. He is on a pretty good team right now so he says he wants to come back? San Francisco is closer to Hollywood and Kerry Rhodes.
But what that video doesnt show is first half moments where the easiest plays couldnt get executed. Moments where they had to settle for a field goals. Lets not forget how Jets invariably had to come back late in the 4th quarter in order to win games. With all those weapons (top notch o-line, best running tandem, good WR's, good TE) that Jets offense even had to struggle. That's how bad Mark Sanchez is. Its like you have to give him a probowl lineup in order for him to survive. He doesnt add anything or make players better. He's not a rookie anymore, what you are seeing is what he is. He's just a stay at home trophy wife eating up all the food in the fridge and wearing all the nice jewelry, keeping the bed warm for the man who provides and has worth.
not tryna be a jackass, but maybe you should learn how to spell quarterback before calling someone a jackass. not a schotty supporter tho.....
